Keyshawn May Not Be Back In 2006?

wow. Key is among the best possession receivers in the league. he does all kinds of dirty work as well.

To me it is simple. if you are a knowledgeable fan -- the kinds that watches games and appreciates stuff that doesn't show up on the stat sheet, then you love Key. If you see nothing but YPC and TDs then you don't think he is so great.

Key is very much the heart and soul of our offense. Losing him would be awful.

i woouldnt call him the heart and soul of our offense - dont know who that is, really - but otherwise agree with your post 100%.

I'm ready to have a threat at WR anyways.

Sarge, no disrespect, but from what I've seen in T.O., I'm not sure he's ready to turn-in his soul for money. I know I sound slightly bitter, but I think there's some credence in saying that T.O.'s not only a Threat to opponent defenses, but if he's not getting His share of the passes or if he's Not happy, ...he's also going to be a threat to your QB (Bledsoe or oOtherwise), and the Cowboy's locker-room.

Just doesn't seem like he's ready to go from helll to halo! The up side is that if Bill is still around, he won't take half the krap Reid withstood.

Good Hunting!

Key is not going anywhere. He will be with Bill and no one else. Glenn the same way. Neither can exsist in this league with out him it as been proven.

IRVING, TX -- So you don't want that big-play, big-money, big-ego big-mouth wide reciever playing for your Dallas Cowboys next year, eh? Well, you may get your wish. Keyshawn Johnson may be outta here.

This might come as a shock to Keyshawn, given the way he spoke out about gossip regarding another high-profile pass-catcher by the name of Terrell Owens. Really, it was awfully bold of Johnson to tell the Dallas Morning News, "We don't need no %@#! receiver.''

Bold, because Keyshawn's comments came across as if he was a member of the decision-making wing at Valley Ranch.

Bold, because not only is he not in on organizational decisions -- he might be the victim of one.

I would describe one source inside the Cowboys as "adamant'' that Keyshawn will not be asked back in 2006. Another source won't go that far, but admits "if you subtract Keyshawn's relationships from the equation, (letting him go) makes some sense.'' Either way, such a move is definitely under consideration.

Is there a noticeable decline in Keyshawn's production? By the numbers, not hugely. His 71 catches led the club, and his 839 yards and six TDs are probably slightly below what the club would wish from him. Those numbers are remarkably similar to what he did in 2005 (70 catches, 981 yards, six TDs) with one notable exception: Johnson caught 15 passes of 20-yards-plus in '04, and just seven last year.

He does do some "little'' things very well. It's a nice luxury to have your top WR be willing to line up inside to pass-block, for instance. (Of course, it'd be nicer to have one who gains a lot of yards and scores a lot of TDs, too.)

What NFL pass-catcher had stats that mirrored Keyshawn's last year? Well, one guy has 75 catches for 855 yards with seven TDs and 12 catches of 20-yards-plus. Of course, that guy was Todd Heap. On a lousy team. That can't throw the ball. Oh, and Heap's a tight end.

Three years ago, I polled five veteran receivers in the NFL and asked them to name the 10 best wideouts in the league. Four of them included Keyshawn on the elite list. It is fair to say that as the former No. 1 overall pick approaches his 34th birthday, he's not that same player.

Has his outrageous personality worn especially thin at Valley Ranch? Again, not that we've noticed. But Keyshawn's "I'm-the-man'' self-image is not shared by some of the other fellas. (And no, not just the kickers and other helpless teammates he screams at on the sidelines.) He is, in many cases, instead accepted by teammates in one of those "aw,-that's-just-Key-being-Key'' setups.

But what happens to the scale if the decision-makers weigh whatever money concerns there might be AND they weigh the production AND they weigh the outrageousness?

Maybe that "relationships'' thing factors in. Keyshawn's future is largely in the hands of the coach, who will likely win an argument with the man who writes the checks if it comes down to that. (Bill was devoted to Chad Eaton, for crying out loud, so he's surely devoted to Key.) But we hear Keyshawn is wrong if he thinks Parcells will go to any length to keep the receiver. Keyshawn is also wrong to believe -- as he apparently does -- that his career numbers, Hall-of-Fame-level, really, make him something of an untouchable.

Johnson has done a nice job ingratiating himself into the Dallas scene. He buddies up to beat writers (though the results of their conversations with him never seem to turn up in the paper.) He buddies up to D/FW business leaders (it's always good to be friends with the biggest liquor distributors in the city). And in the locker room, he had carte blanche because of the leeway given him by the coach. (And what lesser Cowboy would try to buck that?)

And again, he has also been a reasonably productive player here. Maybe not productive enough for him to peacock about as if he's some ungodly combination of Jerry Rice, Don Hutson and Terrell Owens, but productive.

Still, what if you could replace him with, say, Jerry Rice?

Or Don Hutson?

Or Terrell Owens?

Well, Mr. Hutson is dead. Mr. Rice is now a ballroom dancer on TV or something. Mr. Owens is. ... available.

Keyshawn isnt around next season and this team will be making a big mistake.

geeze that would be a huge surprise, us making big mistakes.

You know the Skins would fear us with the great one man get me some lovin TO

Couldn't we just replace Keyshawn with another considerably younger UFA possession-type WR like Joe Jurevicius (who had a nice comeback year), Peter Warrick, (cough) Antonio Bryant (cough cough), Jabar Gaffney, etc.? There are some interesting UFA WR's out there....and hopefully we'll also add a young big-play WR to eventually replace Terry Glenn, like a Santonio Holmes...

Key does things that are needed. You must have a possession WR to balance out the deep threat. Better to have 2 of each. We right now only have one; Crayton may be another Possession but we do need another deep threat.
Fisher is a tool. Suprised he has the nerve to show up at the Ranch after his total screwup regarding the BP extension.

I don't understand why most people think we are getting Owens. I thought Parcells has already said he had no interest in T.O. Am I missing something? I thought Parcells pretty much gets his way when it concerns the team.

One thing about Key's cocksure attitude is you can only do that for as long as you can produce at an elite level. I don't think players look at him as a leader at all. I think they feed off his emotion a little, but I'm gonna guess the author is right when he says a lot of players say, "That's Keyshawn being Keyshawn." Who does Bledsoe look for most often in the clutch? Terry Glenn. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Key gone. I hope the Cowboys do something to address their receiving corps. Thank you Key for all you've done but if it means grabbing a better player, than good luck on your next gig.

I don't care who we add to the receivers, I would still want Key back. I like the fact that he can move the chains and is willing to block on running plays. I like the fact he has some fire in him and we can use all the fire we can get.

I think many here have as much valid speculation in them as this stuff from The Ranch Report. LOL, is speculation really valid?

I see no reason to not have him still in Dallas next year.

We'll know soon about Key, as it plays out at VR. In my mind, I've tried to fancy Key and T.O. on the same roster, and for the life of me, with their pasts, I just cant see the two of them co-existing without utter chaos and ruin, not to mention the strain on BPs nervous system, on the same team. I just cant see it, but that's just me and I guess stranger things have happened in sports.
I just see them keeping/paying Keyshawn and calling it a day.

I agree Keyshawn is one of the BEST possesion receivers in this league. How many times did this guy move the chains, block for the team. You guys are so wishy washy man!!!!

We need this guy.... He works hard everyday!!! We will not get T.O. he is a cancer....

In other words, I talked to the janitor and he said "Um, yesum. I think Keyshawn won't be here next years because I heard him say 'I'm out of here' and then ran out the building."

And, the other person I talked to was some math professor who happened to be walking through the building. I don't really understand his subtraction reference, but I'll put "(letting him go)" in his supposed quote to make it mean something that I think it means even though I know the "source" never said it.
