Keyshawn's passing the torch

Who's the most over-hyped player in the NFL? The former USC receiver has a quick answer for that one.

It is 1:15 pm, Milan leads, 1-nil, on a controversial free kick just before the half of the European Champions League final, my phone rings and it is our NFL writer, Sam Farmer, just leaving the Keyshawn Johnson retirement news conference at Heritage Hall.

Farmer says Johnson's agent, Jerome Stanley, told him that his client had offers from the Raiders (he doesn't need them), the Patriots (they don't need him) and the Titans (USC alumni connection there with Jeff Fisher, Norm Chow). According to Stanley, the Titans offered two years, "close to $8 million," but ESPN/ABC put together a better package.

Stanley said ABC is considering using Johnson on "Dancing With the Stars" and as a fill-in for Regis Philbin.

Should we believe the hype? Speaking of which, at Heritage Hall, Johnson was asked to name the NFL's most over-hyped player.

"Tony Romo," was Johnson's reply. "He's with the Dallas Cowboys, he's played five games, he's an over-hyped deal." On paper, he's right about Romo.

On paper, Johnson has found a very capable successor.

I seem to recall Tony playing more than five games

Romo played 10.5 games and put up some of the best passing numbers in the league. He ranked No. 1 in yards per attempt, No. 1 in average yards at catch (the length of the pass thrown), No. 1 in percentage of passes thrown more than 20 yards, No. 2 in TD percentage, No. 2 in completion percentage, No. 2 in third-down passer rating, No. 3 in overall first-down percentage and No. 5 in overall passer rating.

He still has to prove that he can do the same things over a longer period of time, but he absolutely played very well last season. It's not like he was getting the hype without doing anything.

If that's really what Key said, he's already fitting in with the ESPN crew.

Keyshawn, and what would you say about your career since you were the no. 1 overall pick in the draft? I mean, at least Romo was undrafted.

Keyshawn is bitter because he has finally had to deal with the harsh reality that most of us have seen for the last 4 or 5 years...he is no longer capable of being a #1 WR. I think when you talk as big a game as he does, your delusions eventually catch up to you, and then, you get mad at your former team.

That said, I still like what he did for us, and won't argue with his commitment on the field.

The QB for the Dallas Cowboys is always super-hyped, regardless of who it is. Its one of if the not the highest-profile positions in sports, hype is natural.

GREAT point.

Chad Hutchinson? Okay, point proven.

Likely, Keyshawn is just trying to get his name out there more as a guy who's "not afraid to go there." He's got a career to think about - and being accurate in the media is not nearly so important as being loud and opinionated.

I don't really sense bitterness. I mean, we Cowboys fans love Romo, but to pretty much everyone else, he is the king of overhype. Or at least overexposure. He is a celebrity having not even played a full season. Pro Bowls, Miss Universe, dating American Idols...Not to mention the media is all over the guy. It's all pretty amazing really.

What a good point; being opinionated is the main reason why idiots like Sean Salisbury can make the statements they make.

I am not going to call Irvin an idiot, but he did make some comments that were very questionable on a weely basis...probably why he was able to keep his job. (also I think the nation wanted to see what other type of "suit" he was going to wear)

I guess he doesn't want to count Romo's win over the Panthers as a game.

I honestly don't care. Key is being "shocking"...good for him I guess.

If you really think about it...Romo is overhyped. Now, Keyshawn did not say that he was overhyped as a QB, or that Romo is a bad QB...that would have been different...

Keyshawn is just preparing to write his new book,

"Just Give Me The Damn Microphone"

;)

I've been saying this for years. I'll say it once and I'll say it again, Keyshawn is the ONLY Cowboy I have ever disliked that was actually productive.

I hated how he talked about how much of a threat he was and how we was still an elite receiver, and then on Sunday he would go out and catch an irrelevant 5 catches for 52 yards.

In his mind he's a hall of famer, he even said he was better than Michael Irvin! Key is the last person who should talk about being overhyped, because he used to the be the most overhyped player in football......problem is he was the only one doing the hyping.

Keyshawn is right...

He had 5 good games then sank like a rock...

Favre or Vick should have been Pro Bowlin and Hasselback would have if he wasn't hurt.

When Romo starts gaining some pocket awareness and stop trying to be Steve Young in the pocket, I will believe..

He is a concussion waiting to happen the way he plays...

Should have drafted Quinn....

Please explain how Favre or Vick had a better year than Romo. Then maybe, just maybe, you could have a legitimate case. I doubt it though.

This is coming from a man who would have everyone believe Vinny Testeverde was a great QB for us in 2004.
