I think this whole conversation is pretty dumb, but I'll interject anyway. Owens may be immature, stupid, and completely self-absorbed, but I think he's pretty far from a "thug."

I think he's talking about Irvin.

Porter is more of a ruffian than a thug:

ruffian noun 1.a tough, lawless person; roughneck; bully.

Levi Brown was in Vegas trying to gamble away some of his riches. A tough roughneck named Joey Porter, along with a few buddies, tried to forcefully bully him as he was throwing away his money. That's against the law. OTOH, a thug is a few tiers above a ruffian:

thug noun
: a brutal ruffian or assassin : GANGSTER, TOUGH
- http://merriam-webster.com/dictionary/thug

Now, a thug (and a few associates) would cruise the streets of Miami looking for ATV thieves and pull guns on the thieves in retaliation. Pulling a gun on someone when you can easily replace your stolen ATVs at the nearest Honda Store is a pretty tough, brutish and totally gangsta action.

By comparison, Porter's no thug. :)

thug

(thŭg) Pronunciation Key
n.
 1. A cutthroat or ruffian; a hoodlum.
So he IS a thug :D

There is more than one definition for "thug"... this one seems to go all the way back to its roots in India (which is fine). I think, however, that in the last 200 years or so its definition is more related to a violent criminal than an "assassin." Then again, most people nowadays seems to correlate the term with urban violence. I just think that's wrong.

...but whatever, Theo's right, this is a stupid tangent.

maybe it's me, but a thread about porter, who's NEVER been a cowboy, and is NOW a dolphin, hitting someone else who's got nothing to do with the cowboys either, should be in the NFL zone, not the cowboys. we've got enough of our own stupid arguments going on w/o having to be judge and jury for every "violent" person who happens to play a violent sport for a living.

so we have video of porter hitting someone. anyone wanna watch that snippett and say we know the whole story?

carry on.

What about Jerramy Stevens' BAC? Or Peyton Manning on SNL? Or what about Theisman being replaced on MNF? Michael Vick's jewelry?

It's the off-season.

Perhaps Merrian-Webster should've omitted the "or assassin" reference, but their term is still valid, imo. Porter initiated an altercation in a casino. That's bullish, ruffian behavior. If he were a thug, I could see him waiting outside the casino for Brown to exit. Then he and his partners would jump Brown and try to beat him to a pulp. From my point-of-view, that would be a thuggish type action.

Anyhoo, he's not a Cowboy, so who cares? Waitasec. Does anyone know the current whereabouts of Keith Davis?:

Compared to your HOF WR ?

See... thats the point I am making. People make stupid choices from time to time, that doesnt make them automatically a "thug".

Randy Moss is called a thug, Pacman is called a thug (Well, he is a dumb **)...The list could go on and on. Maybe they are just stupid or immature.

Terrell Owens hasn't done drive by shootings or gotten in trouble with the law. Moss, Taylor, and Jones have.

There are fights and horseplay gone awry that transpire every camp on every team, it is a violent, heated, emotional game that causes even the coolest heads to lose a temper now and then and seeing that Porter is borderline psychotic it is no surprise he would get violent outside of the scrimmage.

Remember when Michael Irvin settled out of court for that mysterious incident that left Everett MacGyver with a scissors caused gash near his ear? How and the devil horseplay led to that i don't know but it did.

Larry Allen regularly was called off of overly aggressive young defenders trying to make the team, Erik Williams was king of the training camp fist fight.

These things happen, when the camera rolls people behave like a Rodney King incident has occured however which is preposterous.

taking controlled substances does not make you a thug, selling it however, does, but Irvin did not sell coke

I am not defending Taylor or Porter here, but seemingly they both threw a punch. Taylor was accused of having a gun, yet no weapon was recovered, and no valid witness was found, not to mention he was the one that was supposedly shot at.

So Sammy "The Bull" wasn't a thug because he didn't live in the ghetto ? And I know you are not saying that, I just think some people don't see the correlation.

So if Barry Bonds has used Steroids (A controlled substance), he isnt a "thug", but his personal trainer or the Balco guy is a "thug" ? What about the doctor who gave the Panthers steroids, is he a "thug too ?

Kids are dumb and immature, does that makes kids "thugs" ? Gimme a break.

****************

My point is, I think the term "thug" is being used in a way that isnt always accurate. And people have different definitions, therefore some people are being put into a category of a "thug" that may or may not be truly a "thug".

There is more, but it wouldnt be appropriate for this forum.

Just when do people no longer qualify as being a "kid"? Seems to me that is your whole problem, you don't wish to hold a grown man to any kind of responsible behavior. if these guys are truly "kids" then their mama needs to spank their rear-ends. These guys we have been talking about, are unequivically "thugs" ,there is absolutely no question about it.

:bang2: :bang2: :bang2: Oh! Well! That makes it ok then! Idiot! Getting drugs out of my neighborhood isn't going to happen either so we should just let dealers and users run unchecked right? :bang2: :bang2: :bang2: :bang2:
