Cowboys backup QB Jon Kitna quietly signed a four-year extension with Dallas after the team acquired in last February via trade.

Kitna didn't attempt a pass this regular season, but the Cowboys got the better end of the deal. Anthony Henry was a huge liability in Detroit's secondary all year; at least Kitna didn't hurt his team. Kitna figures to be back at his scheduled $2M salary in 2010, although it's unclear what he has left.

Really... 4 years... that seems a little long.

Who is this Adam Caplan and how did he get this information before the rest of us?

I suspect the 4 years would be for amortization purposes or window dressing more than an indication of how long we'll want him here.

Henry was a huge liability here and I was ecstatic to learn we got a good backup QB and got rid of him at the same time.

I don't understand why Kitna can't learn how to hold for kicks,,, does he have tiny hands or something?

This doesn't have anything to do with it.

If his hand size keeps him from being a holder....why is he even a QB then.

There were comments made by Carson Palmer before the season about how Kitna is a great veteran mentor and he'd expect Romo to have a solid season.

I wonder how much Romo's heightened play can be attributed to that.

Championships!

Yeah, I can't believe he didn't do it early in his career as a backup.

Hell, Kitna is probably tired of getting his body beat up on playing for bad teams. To me, spending the twilight of your career making a couple million a year holding a clipboard is a pretty good way to wind down.

I like this signing.

Jerry has always liked having a just-over-the-hill starter as primary QB backup. Beuerlein, Kosar, Peete, Wade Wilson, Cunningham.

Four years sounds like a lot, but I'm sure that duration isn't based on a real-time estimate of Kitna's longevity.

Some QBs accept their role as a back-up and mentor when their career is winding down but it seems a lot of QBs wont do this. I assume Kita takes pride in teaching Romo things that only another QB could and enjoys seeing the resulting success.

the 4 years help with his contract $ -- we likely took his 5 mill salary for the year and paid most of it as a bonus

He got it from me while he was cleaning my house. He's also a part-time fantasy football "expert" on Sirius Satellite Radio with John Hansen:

At the bottom of this link you will also see where he cleans houses along with his contact number for a free estimate.

Hey, times are tough. ;)

Um, Kitna signed his extension 10 months ago, at the beginning of March.
