Kitna Extended 4 Years...Old

I like this signing.

Jerry has always liked having a just-over-the-hill starter as primary QB backup. Beuerlein, Kosar, Peete, Wade Wilson, Cunningham.

Four years sounds like a lot, but I'm sure that duration isn't based on a real-time estimate of Kitna's longevity.

Beuerlein and Peete were not even close to the hill when they were Cowboys.

Um, Kitna signed his extension 10 months ago, at the beginning of March.

:laugh2:

Any chance that Kitna or McBriar works on holding this offseason with Suisham or whomever our kicker is?

Can't we bring in Novacek to teach someone other than Tony?

Kitna was an outstanding pickup for multiple reasons.

Having a guy around with his character and credentials--who is not there to help and not overthrow the current QB--is a real luxury. My only qualm is how this may affect the developement of Romo's future replacement. But timing-wise, that may not even be an issue, as Romo should have many years left.

Yeah this is old news but I'm just as happy with it as I was when it was first announced 10 or so months ago. I'm glad we're in a better situation with a veteran back up QB.

If we are going to teach someone I'd go with Patrick Crayton. He has great hands and he was a college QB so it gives us some trick play options.

Stephen McGee?

I liked the Brad Johnson signing a couple years ago, but man it was a disaster when he had the chance to start for us. Kitna, though... I have more confidence that his arm hasn't died like Johnson's.

what were the details?
2009: Signed a four-year contract extension through 2013. 2010: $2 million, 2011: $2.6 million, 2012: $3.1 million, 2013: $2.9 million, 2014: Free Agent

I'm glad Kitna will be here for a while longer. Hope he continues to make the easy money as he backups a healthy Romo

This doesn't have anything to do with it.

If his hand size keeps him from being a holder....why is he even a QB then.

he does drop a lot of snaps,, you did notice that, didn't you?

i see, we pretty much agreed to fund his 2009 $5 mill salary fully and get him a more reasonable backup salary for a few years after.

this suggests to me that Kitna would have refused to come here without some form of extension.

Beurlien wasn't over the hill, he was 29.

Backup QB is the best position, when you do good everything thinks your a god, when you do terrible it is expected.

I envy myself last year.

Was gonna say, didn't know you could extend people this time of year.

You can extend contracts at any time.

There were comments made by Carson Palmer before the season about how Kitna is a great veteran mentor and he'd expect Romo to have a solid season.

I wonder how much Romo's heightened play can be attributed to that.
According to my very own statistical analysis and the use of my abacus, I have calculated that 17.8653298% of Romo's heightened play is attributed to Kitna's tutelage.

They said "quietly." :)

As I've said all along, I have high confidence in Kitna as a backup. The comment about future player development (McGee or whomever else we pick up in the next few years) is a side note only.

Look for kitna to make a big spalsh when he hits free agency. Hopefully we have someone waiting to take over for him because some team is going to offer him big bucks.;)

I think it helps, not hinders McGee's development. Think about it, he has a VERY good (pushing forward to great) starting QB to watch and learn from, and a veteran backup that has put up good numbers on some very bad teams and has been around long enough to see a bit of everything.

There is something to be said for experience at the QB position and between the two of them, I think McGee can benefit a whole lot if hes paying attention. It's not much to go off of, but the sounds of the game from the Tampa game suggests that he is.
