Well only a fool would scout a guy while he was on the bench...What about Frank Gore and Larry Allen going to the pro-bowl? Judge that!

Anyone who thinks going to the pro bowl means anything needs re-education.

I do believe that it means "something" but certainly not as much as it once did. Back in the day when coaches (and players?) selected the players it meant a lot more but now that it is a combination of coaches and fans and who knows who else, it is definitely more of a popularity contest and has more to do with name recognition than with actual merit.

That said, the coaches do still have some weight in who is selected so it is not strictly a popularity contest.

There, now you have been re-educated. :D

Roy Williams and Sean Taylor made the probowl. Neither of them had great years.

Allen made it because the SF line played well last year and he's the only name anyone recognizes on that line. I saw about 8 SF games last year -- Allen looked good AT TIMES and at times he also looked just like the aging played we saw the previous few years in Dallas. If I was going to pick a probowler from that group it would have been Jonas Jennings.

Now you judge that.

I wish there were certain measureable standards that are required for playing in the pro bowl. for QBs a rating of 90 or better; RBs the highest YPC with a certain number of carries (enough so that part time players would not get in); WRs - YPC, Yds, TDs (top 2-3 as of Jan 1) also factor in drops; TEs same + a blocking number- like what should be used for the O linemen. O linemen would be sacks, penalties, andsome kind of a blocking formula for run blocking. DL- tackles, TFL, Sacks all together- and split it up so that half come from 4-3 and half from 3-4. Same with LBs. DBs % completed- lowest gets in. YPC- lowest gets in. TDs allowed- lowest gets in. PDs- the higher the better. And for safeties add tackles. FOR ALL defensive personel missed tackles would be a big factor. Now of course there would be problems there as well- but you would not get LA, Dangelo Hall or Sean Taylor in the Pro Bowl either. ANd no onewho did not have at least 10 games played in the season is eligible- and I would be happy to see it raised to 12.

He's a backup type being paid starter money.

He isn't alone on this football team.

We have more than a few who we have overpaid for and got less than desireable results.

Look at FO.com's run blocking results in or near his areas of responsibility....they are quite good. As a run blocker, he performed quite well last season. He struggled in pass protection at times, mostly with blitz and stunt recognition, which is understandable in his first year with the O-Line. Considering his pay level isn't that high, I think the return on him was solid and if he gets the pass blocking problems solved, he's probably a steal. Not exactly a Lufthansa Heist, but still a good steal.

kosier wasn't the problem last year- Rivera was. But with Rivera gone, Kosier has to step up to show he is not the weak link. He v. McQ should be a good camp battle if the team is committed to trying McQ at LG.

We can pull up all the stats we like about these players, but we all know how they played when we saw them; Rivera's back was a big problem because he rightfully played scared and lost alot of his power, Gurode was inconsitent becuase he was/is still adjusting to the position, Kosier played well but is too weak and needs help in pass protection/ can't maul in run protection like we need of him, and Flozell is just really really slow.... too slow to cover the top DE's which populate 99% of the time right next to the LT. Columbo payed great in the beginning of the year then I don't know what happened.

If by another miracle ( as with every other team with their own respective O-lines) these guys go a whole season without going on the DL and stay as a cohesive unit I won't be overly concerned. LD needs to play tough every game or we are screwed.

We know what we THOUGHT we saw as they played. But we do not KNOW really how well or how poorly they did. Only the coaches know.
