If you aren't technically looking for a coach you don't have to follow the rules relating to a coaching search.

The Rooney Rule was extended to the front office, as well. That's what Florio is referring to.

The rule applies to upper level management as well.

I hate that this is happening now. The Commanders have still been fighting, this could be the week the team just gives up completely - I'd rather have them play one more week of solid defense, make Eli Manning go all ELI MANNING!!!! for them, and then fold up when they play us.

Didn't see Florio's blurb and forgot they hired Allen.

Or they fight harder b/c Zorn will have a greater chance to be retained under Allen. You might not have read the press release, but Cerrato left Zorn out of the coaches "he's had the pleasure to work with."

Something on Gruden I came across.

SI: MMQB, re: Gruden

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To make it clear, Gruden told me he definitely would not coach anywhere in 2010 and didn't plan on coaching the year after; and ESPN vice president Norby Williamson told colleague Richard Deitsch that Gruden would "absolutely'' be at ESPN for the 2011 season.

After talking to Gruden Monday afternoon, I got the impression it was some about family, some about the exhausting reality of the business, and some about liking what he's doing. A good friend of Gruden's stressed that last point to me later Monday, telling me Gruden's surprised how much he likes a more sane life and is digging his new job on TV.

"As you know,'' Gruden said, "I love this game very much. This job gives me the opportunity to see the game at a different angle, and I'll be honest -- I just fell in love with it. I want to get good at it. I really like the team I'm on at ESPN. They're really trying to help me be good.''

I told Gruden I was surprised -- that I thought it was a given he'd take this one-year hiatus from coaching and be back in 2010.

"Look,'' he said, "I went into this with an open mind. They've told me they want me to stay around, and it's nice to be wanted. I was in Oakland for four years, then got traded away from there. I was in Tampa for seven years and got fired. That's a little bit of an open wound, to be honest. So it's nice to be wanted. I've got a great crew. I love working with Ron Jaworski and Mike Tirico. They're teaching me a lot about this business.

"I'm 46 years old. I probably will coach again. I miss the opportunity to coach players, to help them get better. I really miss the competition. But I don't miss the agony.''

Gruden says he hasn't missed any of his high-school son's football games this year, and he's enjoyed being more a part of the lives of his wife and all three sons.

"This is going to give me a chance to get my act together in some other ways,'' he said. "My boys are at the age where they need a father to be around a little bit more.''

You mean it's not conducive to a good family life to be going to work at 3:17 a.m., five days a week?

It's a good call by Gruden the person and Gruden the announcer; he has a chance to be good at it, as long as he remembers he's working outside the family now. I also really like how he's taken the year for some continuing education about football. We talked about the spread offense and how much he's learned about it from reaching out to college coaches. "I've really learned a lot from [Oregon coach] Chip Kelly and the Appalachian State coaching staff,'' he said. "I've liked learning more football.''

So now two of the interesting 2010 coaching candidates are off the market -- Gruden and Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher, who has erased any doubts about his return with a strong recent run. Monday's news means Shanahan should have even more choices in a couple of months

I don't believe for a second Zorn is sticking around. That guy is Phillips-esque in his apparent HCing ineptitude. He just doesn't get crucified for it because the media genuinely likes him because he'll chat with them for hours.

For once, I can trust someone in our Front Office to make this decision. It feels so good :)

What minority candidate did they interview? Just curious.

I don't know -- it wasn't reported. The only thing I have to go on are the reports. The last one I read said the Rooney Rule was adhered to.

Something else I came across.

December 17th, 2009 · Posted by spence · #comments">No Comments · Washington Commanders At NFL.com, former Commanders beat reporter Jason LaCanfora is writing that Jon Gruden has an iron-clad contract with ESPN through 2010 and there is no chance he will be the next Commanders head coach. Instead, the team is looking at former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan as part of a thorough house-cleaning of the organization to turn the franchise around. The hiring of Bruce Allen is only the first step in changing the front office. Allen is not known as a personnel expert and LaCanfora writes that Commanders owner Dan Snyder is searching for a top personnel expert to join the team, as well.
I continue to hear from multiple league sources that Mike Shanahan remains the most likely choice to take over as the Washington Commanders’ head coach in 2010, and the hiring of Bruce Allen is but one move in an organizational overhaul. Shanahan has been quietly making inroads to round out a staff, multiple sources said, and they would be surprised if Shanahan does not ultimately end up in Washington to replace head coach Jim Zorn shortly after the season ends in a team president/head coach capacity similar to the role Joe Gibbs had there.
Owner Daniel Snyder has been looking to make changes in the organization, and while some believed longtime team official Vinny Cerrato would end up with some role in a potential shakeup, I have heard that he would not have had a place in a rearranged organization, which led to his exit.
…
The Commanders will explore candidates to round out the front office in player personnel roles, according to sources, with current personnel execs like Eric DeCosta (Baltimore), Bobby DePaul (Chicago) and Doug Williams (Tampa Bay) among possibilities. The Commanders came close to hiring DePaul to replace Cerrato twice during the Gibbs regime, according to sources, while DeCosta, a rising star as Ozzie Newsome’s top lieutenant in Baltimore, began his career with the Commanders. Williams won a Super Bowl as Washington’s quarterback and worked under Allen for the Buccaneers in personnel. Snyder has also been impressed with the work of Morocco Brown, in his first season as Washington’s director of pro personnel, and he could be someone to remain in a revamped front office.
…
Many will look at Allen’s hiring as a sign that Gruden could reunite with him in Washington, but multiple sources continue to tell me that Gruden is not going to coach until at least the 2011 season, and is loving his job as analyst on Monday Night Football. He signed an extension with ESPN, which I am told is ironclad for 2010 in terms of leaving, even for a coaching or “dream job” gig.
“There is a zero percent chance that Jon coaches anywhere next year,” said a source close to the coach.
…
Allen brings strong organizational and football administration skills to Washington. His forte is not so much directly scouting –- and more moves are expected as he rounds out his football operations staff -– and is an innovator in writing contracts. He is a former agent and is well versed in interacting with agents, negotiating and deal making. He’s well liked and has a good reputation for his work, including manipulating the salary cap. He also is adept at interacting with the media, an area where the organization has suffered.

LaCanfora writes that although Shanahan has had talks with the Buffalo Bills about their head coaching job, Washington remains the most likely destination for him. That would be one in the eye for Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who is known to admire Shanahan and it is thought by many Jones would pursue him to coach the team if Wade Phillips is fired after this season.

I think Snyder mentioned in the press conference that they did adhere to the Rooney Rule, but wouldn't say who they interviewed. If so, I'm assuming that he would notify the league of who they talked to even if they don't tell the press. This whole thing has been on the down-low for awhile now...can NOT believe nobody had the scoop on this before it happened. In fact, everyone in the media was saying their "sources" were telling them that Vinny was "definitely staying" on next year lol...

Lavar Arrington seems to believe that this deal is done and he said you can take it to the bank. I don't know if he has any insides but I remember Lavar said this last month as well that they had a deal already in place. Just spreading what he said. Discuss that amongst yourselves.

Well, I think that would stink, but plenty of people think he's no good anyway, so hopefully they're right.
