When back and watched this tape:

Compared that to Zack Martin film from college. Then I looked at nfl.com draft summaries and ratings for both.

Came away with Martin being a physically stronger and more technically sound player coming out of college, with the only advantage for Collins being longer arms.

All things being equal, I don't think we get Zack Martin redux this year from Collins. We might want to put a little lid on our excitement until Collins can get his balance and hand work fixed.

And I wouldn't pencil Leary to the bench just yet.

The kid still got to come to camp, stay healthy, work hard, improve on technique, and understand the schemes...
but he's an excellent prospect. I'm not expecting him to come in and have a pro-bowl season, I wouldn't be surprised if his starts are limited to spot duty. 16' is the season where I believe the hard work really show, this goes for Green as well.

My thoughts as well.

I don't think Collins has a starting spot lined up for him. He has to come into camp ready for a tough battle.

Leary beating Collins out would be fantastic for Dallas actually. If he walks as a free agent then Dallas would get a comp pick for him and still have an instant starter waiting to take Leary's place. Be an All Pro Leary!

The only reason we are having this conversation is because Collins was an UDFA. If we had bundled some picks, moved up to 14 or so to get him, everybody would be penciling him in as the starter.

that's the beauty of it... we didn't... so no rush, no pushing.... he will naturally ascend to where he belongs this season...

Garrett and company know they have to at least appear to have a competition, the damage in the locker room if Collins was just handed it would be severe. If Leary shows up better in both practice and games then they will have little choice but to start him.

Agree.

Honestly it would be almost impossible for a rookie to beat out Leary. Leary is a heck of a player.

Now Doug Free on the other hand... That guy could be beat out by several rookies.

I think Leary is better then Free so, for me, i'd like to see Collins try to beat out Free.

I'm guessing there will be some competition as to whom Collins will be replacing, but I don't think there's going to be a real competition in terms of him starting. Unless he has a rough training camp or something, I can't see him not being a starter ASAP.

Kid's got a chip on his shoulder bigger than the big screen at AT&T. Wouldn't put it past him to be the starter.

I can't imagine that anyone expects him to be as good as Martin was as a rookie. Martin was All-Pro as a rookie which is a really rare feat.

The real question with Collins is what will be his primary position in training camp. The Cowboys biggest need is to find a backup swing Tackle. If Collins is better as an OT than Green/Weems then he should be practicing at OT, IMO.

Leary is a really good and underrated player. Replacing him with Collins won't really help the team in 2015.

FYI - "Tape" implies the All-22 coaches film. This video is just "game footage".

I was paying special attention to situations where he was "covered" to see how he reacted because his position here will most likely be guard. On almost every occasion he was covered he received a +. He is a beast as an inline blocker and suburb in small area pass protection. The only real struggles he had were against speed outside. I'm not saying he will equal what Martin did last year but I wouldn't say it is impossible. If anything, he is a better run blocker, but not as good as a pass protector. JMHO

You mean I shouldn't expect Collins to be an All-Pro rookie? He must be a bum.
