Twitter: Lamb Blindside Block

Have you ever been blind sided when running full speed. It’s a good rule. A blindside block is a concussion waiting to happen.

man get out of here, he hit him square in the shoulder not head, it's the players job to protect himself, and it's Lamb's job to block for his player, what is he suppose to do watch him get tackle. you're taught in that situation to keep your head on a swivel. anybody that played football knows that.

So if Lamb had turned his back to him and then the defender ran into him, that would make it an illegal block in the back (above the waist) based on the rules, right? :D
Actually that was called in the Steelers game yesterday, Big Ben turned right before the hit and they did in fact call a illegal block in the back.

It’s counter intuitive for players but Lamb could have simply extended his arms and “shoved” instead of the traditional block using your shoulder pad....
Yes, but being a WR, shoving a LB (I think) coming at full speed is pretty risky for his fingers and wrists...but it's either that or turn your back to him.

My question is what do you teach your players to do in that situation?

Anyone know?

I was wondering the same thing and the only thing I can think of is to basically become a defensive back who's jamming a guy at the line. It sounds stupid but either that or you have to shadow the pursuing defender until you're both moving away from your own end zone.

Yall remember all the people Jason Witten could have laid out? He would throw his hands in the air and just get in the way just enough to disrupt the defender.

Maybe the vets know to do that but the rookies are still used to the rough tough college game where they can still hit people.

What’s stupid is Lamb isn’t allowed to block there.

But Neal who is aggressive and a tank can plow Lamb over and that’s ok lol.

What’s he supposed to do

by the letter of the law it is a blindside block and the correct call. Stand like a statue or move out of the way
I thought he was standing like a statue. I didnt see his feet move toward the goal line to initiate contact. Looked like the defender ran directly into him.

In any case it seemed like that penalty fire Lamb up. He threw a violent stiff arm right after that.

The hit on Noah Brown by this defender was the cheap shot.

I guess the players have to just let the guy run past him and make the tackle. Or turn you back at the last second and let the defender run you over. I get safety but unless Lamb ran backwards at the defender I think it shouldnt be a flag.

If this is a true rule that part of the rule needs adjustment, thats a legal block in any football league, he came across the front sideways and maybe legal block to prevent his player from being tackled, what now we need to have players pull up and not block and ALLOW a defender to make the play, just lay down.. no football basics are made of of blocking and tackling and this to me is a technically sound legal block.. if the defender doesnt want those hits on him , pull yourself out of the play..

RG and all these updated and new rules are truly ruining real football..they belong in amatuer football , youth and other places where you are protecting players not being paid millions to play and win..

this is a Business, its a professional sport and im sorry but hits like that are part of the game and CEEDEE was going his job..

They called a similar play on the Seahawk's WR tonight. The ex-ref on the broadcast said the rule is you can't block someone running parallel or toward your goal line.
I'm not sure that can be true. Any defender running side to side can't be blocked now?
So if a defensive end is chasing your QB who rolled the pocket the OL can't block him since the path the QB may be parallel to the goal line/LOS?

Not sure thats accurate.

....for player safety.....he standstill and he's good. Will learn. Can't be returning in the direction of your goal line.
Well, if Lamb stood there like a straw man and tried to otherwise impede the path of the defender he would have been trucked by said defender. The rule works on return teams and even at the LOS, but creates uncertainty during plays downfield.

I want to see the official's explanation on this play. Totally legal block.

It was a good call. It could have been worse, there was clear helmet to helmet contact. Lamb isn't a big enough body to turn into the defender.

Don't know what else to say, other than, that's the rule.

I haven't looked it up but that's what the ex-ref on NBC Sunday night game broadcast said when the similar play from Seahawks WRs got called for the same penalty.

So how do you have a blindside block on the front? This ain't the first time this has happened to Lamb. His first college game had the same thing.

One of the NFL new rules. I saw it called in a couple other games on sunday. I'm not sure what the WR is supposed to do in these situations.
