The Cowboys must decide by May 1, 2024 if they want to exercise Lance’s 5th year option which will cost upwards of 21M. If this year is going to be a development year for Lance, should the Cowboys take the 21M chance on him?

Whatever it is, Trey Lance will be at the lowest tier pay for 5th year option.

The fifth year option this year that was picked up in 2022 was 23m$. The fifth year option for Trey in 2025 will be close to 30m$. There is a 0% chance you’re paying you project backup QB 30m$
Agree.
The Cowboys will just ride out Lance's deal throughout 2024 as they evaluate his progress during the offseason (OTAs, training camp, and preseason games).

The team knew this. They’ll have a plan to see what he’s got and decide what they want to do.

They don’t have to pick up that 5th year option. They can just resign him to a new contract as long as both sides agree. Lance is in no position to play hardball on a new contract.

That’s salaries in 2023. Trey’s fifth year option will be picked up in 2024 for a salary in 2025. It is based on the average of current league QB deals, which many insanely expensive ones have already been signed since your number was calculated and it’ll continue to skyrocket. 2 years of inflation will bring it up to or close to 30m$

Not unless he is clearly starting. There is no way a team should have a $21 million backup QB.

You are absolutely correct. It would probably be a 1 year deal at a lower cost.

If he develops into a backup QB then 21 mil would be a pretty decent deal.

No way. The only way you pick up the 5th year option is if some how Lance plays this season and leads us to the Superbowl or plays like Dan Marino when he replaced David Woodley back in 83.

That's right. If he is the backup, they will do a new contract.

Yeah, it absolutely isn’t just a situation where you have to pick up that 5th year or lose him. They can work a deal out where both sides are happy.

Like I said, Lance is in no position to play hardball on a contract. They’ll have plenty of time to figure out if Lance is a franchise guy or not.

Also, if things are going well. He could very well want to sign a contract with Dallas.

After 4 years won't he become a Free Agent? I can't imagine if his offer from the Cowboys isn't at least 20M that his agent won't want him to test the market..
