They will decline the 5th year option but next year is not his 5th year. He is under contract for this year and next so they have two years to figure it all out. He either shows he can be a starter and they make a decision between him and Dak or he shows he will only ever be a backup and they decide to sign him as such or let him leave. I don’t mind the trade at all but the timing of things between his and Dak’s contract seem to be headed for very hard decisions in the not too distant future. It certainly will be interesting to watch!

I’d guess Jerry will play out the season.

Start shopping Dak in Feb 2024.

Post June 1 cut if they can’t work a trade.

Save 200 million.
Even if that was the case, and Lance was good enough to replace Dak, they're not saving anything. At least not as far as a cap hit. Lets do this hypothetical.

2024. Dak is a June 1st cut and Lance takes over on his 4th year for cheap. Even with Dak being a June first cut, he's still a 20-30M dead cap. Nothing cheap about that.
2025. Same situation as far as cap hit. A Lance 5th year option and the other half of Dak's dead cap adds up to over 50M. There are other options, but there's no cheap option. Then you have to pay Lance. Which would be similar to Dak. Or else you wouldn't be dumping Dak for Lance.

My first question is how will he compare to quarterbacks such as Carrol who are slotted now.

Yeah. Don’t get me wrong he was a disappointment in San Francisco but the reason they traded him is they are all in Purdy. I have seen reports that say Lance outplayed Darnold in the preseason games. So that report that Darnold beat him out might be false. Darnold just accepted the backup role. If you look at the San Francisco situation Lance lost his job because of injury. You know why Dak got such a big contract from Dallas in 21? The Cowboys had no other option but him. If Denucia played like Purdy, Dak would not have been tagged a second time. Once the coaches/players respect the new quarterback the old quarterback has to go. Like Bee queens, Romo, and now Lance.
Where did you see the reports that Darnold outplayed Lance? I would like to read that? It sure didn't happen in the preseason games, he was awful.

According to Young, Darnold volunteered to take less money to come to SF to be a backup and learn. I didn't watch Darnold in preseason but do remember him beating us when he came back from an injury.

Cowturd has been squawking about Darnold since the 49ers signed him. San Francisco insiders on NFL network said Darnold looks more comfortable than Lance in the Shanahan scheme. You are right a San Francisco YouTuber said Lance played better in the games and broke it down.

That's what everyone seems to be counting on. Because at face value, it's a wasted 4th round pick. Even if he develops into a good QB, there's no guarantee the Cowboys will benefit from it. If he turns out to be good, and we already paid Dak, can't pay them both. Best you can hope for is to get a better than 4th round pick in a trade. I'm not seeing the upside.
They don't seem to be in any hurry to pay Dak.

Ever wonder why Colin Cowherd loved Lance coming out in that draft and said San Fran made such a good deal to move up for him… and then abruptly started saying that Lance was a bust?

Could it be because Lance was dating Cowherd’s daughter and then broke it off?

“I think he’s special,” Cowherd said of Lance. “By the way, I’m not going to lie, he was at my house 24 hours ago. Very humble, very gracious, he’s got all the right things in life that he cares about.”

You said was? Now I am interested in to hearing what he has to say next week on the trade.

Yeah, to be fair, I really don’t know what happened (because I couldn’t care any less about that sort of thing)… but having listened to Cowherd for years, do I think that his opinion could be effected by a guy breaking it off with his daughter? Absolutely. Cowherd definitely has favorites and favorite punching bags.

But to be honest… I really don’t know anything beyond that they dated and Cowherd was kissing his butt while they were together.

The Cowboys must decide by May 1, 2024 if they want to exercise Lance’s 5th year option which will cost upwards of 21M. If this year is going to be a development year for Lance, should the Cowboys take the 21M chance on him?
They could extend him at developmental/backup money instead of taking the 5th year option.

Yeah Cowturd picks his favorites based off of who he is friends with. He seems to be close with someone in the Rams, Chargers, and Colts front office. He loves Russ and Payton. I wonder what Dak did to him?

Teams typically extend players with 1 year left on their contract. Not including a 5th year option. They've done nothing so far to indicate they're not extending him after this season. If anything, what they've done so far points to an extension. The most recent restructure is one indication.

That said, I'm sure how well he plays, or doesn't play, might be a deciding factor.
