Evening zonesters, I was listening to K & C MasterPiece on the drive home and they were interviewing James Lofton. They asked him, "what's wrong with the Dallas Cowboys?" His reply was, "the expectation." He also began to go on about the Cowboys having the largest fan base. What do you guys think about that? There are many teams that have "true fans," but in my opinion it seems that we have more "band waggoners" than true fans. I say that because I can recall many people calling in to the radio station when Tom Landry was fired. A lot of people were saying they would never cheer for the Cowboys again. How could one say that but call themselves a die hard fan of "the team?"

The Cowboys have more true fans than any other NFL team. The Cowboys also have more people who hate the Cowboys more than any other team.

That's the way I see it.

Add the two up and you got a epicly large group of fans who care about the Cowboys in one way or another (to win or to lose).

More bandwagoners?

Love my team, but what wagon of success have they been on that would make new fans want to get on it?

What I actually meant was, during general conversations at the workplace you hear people saying they used to be Cowboys fans until they got sorry, etc....so not necessarily band wagon fans but "fair weather" fans.

Tom Landry was unquestionably the face of the franchise, revered and respected as much as a team could ever hope for. Personally, I was sad to see him go as he was one of my childhood heroes. That being said even "he" was not bigger than the Cowboys. If Landry's firing was the ultimate Cowboy fan litmus test, then so be it, and so long. It's these types of defining moments that occasionally allow you to thin the herd a little.

A friend told me on a flight that there is a new book coming out by Mrs. Landry that claims Coach Landry disliked Jerry so much that he cheered for the Giants after he was fired.

So they lost one fan for sure. Coach Landry.

Yeah cuz this team has given people a reason to "jump on the bandwagon" the last few years.

I don't think you know what a "Bandwagon fan" is.

We have very loyal fans honestly! Myself included have seen the glory years as well as the lean years which we are currently living through.

Do you think cowboys are hated more than duke basketball? I think so, But every article I read suggests otherwise. Sorry to derail but its been bugging me for yeara

People say alot of things when emotionally wounded. In fact, the more emotionally invested one is in something, the greater the chance of injury. I would expect a casual fan to not care much, I would expect someone who lives and dies Cowboys to be very susceptible to saying something like that. Landry was extended family to some of these fans, they grew up watching him as a distant patriarch of their football family. They all came back, once the sting went away and it was understood that in life, all things change. But it is the die hard fan who is going to reflexively be prone to such remarks, not the bandwagoner...

I know we have a huge fan base but im really not sure if we have more fans than the stealers do. They have picked up a ton of bandwagon fans everywhere. An away game and the stealers make a good play and the crowd goes off like its a almost a home game its crazy.

I have talked to older fans who left the Cowboys because of Jerry & Coach Landry.

I do occasionally run across fans who are scoping new teams just because the Cowboys are stuck on average, year after year after year. Fair weather or whatever people can cheer for whoever they want.

I can't stand Jerry so I cannot even be fair about that slimy old coot.

I remember when Tony Dorsett left, some questioned if it was the right thing to do and Landry's answer was "We are all just cogs in the machine that have to replaced sooner or later". I always thought that was a little cold, but generally I agreed. So while I didn't like the way it was handled, I agreed it was time for Tom to move on.

I have always thought the Packers had the biggest fan base of all the NFL teams.

No, I am sure the Cowboys have the largest.

The theory I have seen bandied about is this:

(Cowboys Fans - Cowboys Haters) < (Packer Fans - Packers Haters).

In otherwords, there are more Cowboys fans than Packers fans -- probably by a large measure, however, there are a TON of Cowboys haters. There are a lot of Packers fans and not a whole lot of folks (other than in the NFC North) who hate the Packers.
