Larry Brown is an idiot announcer but he's on target on this one

I personally do not have a problem with one team running up the score. But, if I were a coach, which I am certainly not, I would do everything possible to run out the clock as fast as possible when I have a great lead.

I disagree. Brooking was more grown like a Rosie O'Donnell.

It made me mad when the Vikings ran up the score, though I don't blame them for it. Apparently they were sending a "message" to the Saints.

It made me mad that we lost, not that we lost by an extra touchdown.

This was discussed in another thread that went 10 pages. Again, one side believes that the Vikings showed poor sportsmanship. I contend that if Wade is going to direct the team to use time outs, throw the ball four times and go for it on 4th down on our own 20-yard line, you should expect the other team to keep playing.

But the real point is, I'm not quite sure (regardless of whether it showed poor class or not) why any fan or player cares any more about losing 34-3 than losing 27-3. Both scores are horribly embarrassing, and both mean the start of the off-season.

Perfect answer. Either way, we sucked today.

I still think it is classless to run a play action pass on 4th down when the game is over.

That said, I could care less if they want to run up the score and actually I am glad they did, the worse the defeat the more eager this team is going to be to get back to work.

What I meant was should a game be ended in the last two or three minutes of a game if one team is ahead by a certain amount of points? I was trying to compare it to a 10-run rule in little league baseball. This would certainly prevent a team from running up the score.

No, no one is suggesting to make running up the score illegal. Just saying that it is classless to throw it into the endzone on 4th and 3 with less than 2 minutes in the game and up by 24 points? Clear for you now, slugger?

Well said...Though I think I would have rather lost a nail-biter :laugh2:

The last touchdown was cheap, no doubt about it...but they did nothing illegal and I don't think their gloating was directed towards the Cowboys as it was them being happy for Favre. It's a tough pill to swallow, but no reason to hate them for it.

Brown's announcing partner, i forget his name he's so insignificant, was whining about the Vikes running up the score, playing the violin.

Larry quickly responded that no team should be asking for mercy and if a team is running up the score that is the position the team has put itself in.

In a nutshell, there is no crying in the NFL.

None of the cowboys has whined (I hope) and the only whining might that of fans and commentors.

But Larry is right: Do what you do well and keep doing it and do not sweat too much that feelings are gonna be hurt.

What do you mens think?

Its called "sportsmanship" and "winning with class".

Its like the 07 Patriots throwing bombs to Randy Moss with 2 min left in the game with the score 42-0. Sure you can do it and nobody is going to stop you, but you get the reputation around the league real fast with that crap.

Plus, you are forgetting one very important thing.....You usually have to play that team again the next year that you just ran the score up on. Players tend to remember when another team tries to embarrrass them and they usually want some payback the next time they play each other.

In my original post on the first page, as horribly worded as it was (and hence the further clarification), I never mentioned anything about making it illegal to run up the score. I just think that if it is classless for the winning team to go for another score in garbage time, then it should be equally classless for the losing team to go for a touchdown instead of taking knees and killing the clock, thus making garbage time pointless to play. In a blowout, any points scored in garbage time by any team really do not mean anything.

A 10-run rule comparison was probably not the best thing to compare it to, it was just the first thing that came to mind.

Today has been a frustraing day and somebody mentioned thin mints and there are none around. I get to do some golfing tomorrow, maybe that will make things better.

You never played in the sandlot, did ya, Beasty?

And no, it's called lets feel sorry for the other team and humiliate them further by not playing hard -- EVER DOWN. At the playground, in the battle field, in business and in the NFL, you play to win ever down and those of yew who don't are the ones who skip home.

But seriously, class is for home ec. Sportsmanship is for chess and cricket.
Winning is for the NFL.

Want to know who was the master of this kind of sportsmanship?
Buddy Ryan! What did he get from it? A lot of heartache and not 1 super bowl ring to show for being the eagles head coach. all those years.
What goes around, comes around. Too bad Favre will be too chicken_ to stay around for next season.

I guess you don't remember when the Cowboys beat the Giants on Thanksgiving 38-3 and Dallas was accused of running up the score on NY.

Their players too vowed to remember the whopping the Cowboys put on them by running up the score. They never did.

All this is just after-game fuming. The Cowboys aint gonna revenge anything other than winning when it matters next year.

This whole thing is a big ado about nothing.

I guess no one watched the players laughing and joking with each other during the handshake crap after the game.
