Leary: More value as a backup OG or as a trade chip?

I've been going back and forth on it.

On one hand, our offensive line is our biggest strength. Having that kind of depth as insurance is really nice. Especially since Free misses games here and there. And his contract is super cheap.

On the other hand, I feel like that between his cheap contract, his age, and his reputation on this offensive line, if he were included in a package (say Leary plus a 3rd rounder), he could get back a pretty nice RB or DT.

Gun to my head, I think I'd rather keep him as insurance. But it's awfully tempting to see what he could get back in a trade.

Boy so many variables.

The Cowboys could keep him, release Berny and gain $2 mil of cap space.

At this juncture if the Cowboys could get more than 5th out of him, I'd seriously consider it. This is probably going to be his last year in Dallas anyway.

The Cowboys could maybe trade him straight-up for the Miller, the RB at Miami. Heck, they need a guard.

I love Miller. If they could get Miller for Leary, I'd do it and just hope that Chaz Green will be ready sooner rather than later.

I have no interest in giving up our terrific depth on the offensive line. You never know when one of these guys can go down.

i agree keep what we have and lets roll with it. More players will want to be here than other teams.

It would be tempting to see what Leary plus a 3rd round pick, and a back up linebacker would net the Cowboys on the open market. I don't think Leary will be back next year.

I'd have no problem trading Leary at some point since he's going to be a free agent at the end of the year, not that you'd get much for him because of his medical issue with his degenerative knee, maybe a conditional fifth rounder to be a fourth depending on games played at best but you can never have enough depth along the offensive line..... Bernadeau can play guard and center in a pinch..

We've been spoiled in these last couple of drafts. Rookies usually don't make the full season. They usually hit a wall. He's cheap and certainly capable of stepping in and starting if needed. He's probably more valuable to us on the roster. Who knows what next season brings? If we lose him to FA next year, that would be a bummer but if we traded him this year and sustained an injury at Guard, who are we going to bring in to start? What if we lose two starters?
