Leary: More value as a backup OG or as a trade chip?

Won't be an upgrade until he gets some playing time? Sounds like you are eating your own tail with that argument.

Preseason and practice at the pro level since I have to clarify. It could be midseason or later before he adjust .

Martin. Smith. Fredrick. All first round offensive linemen, all started from Day 1.

Collins was a projected Top 10 pick cut from the same cloth. He's starting from Day 1.

Replacing Costa and other no talent jags is much different than replacing a member of one of the better lines in football.

Collins is a rookie and there is a good chance that he won't be an upgrade to Leary or Free until he gets some playing time. I think this board vastly overrates the impact that most rookies have.

This.

You're ignoring who those players replaced vs who Collins would replace.

trading away our depth doesn't sound like a smart thing to do...

As it stands, Leary is the starter. If Collins beats him out, I have no problem trading him if the right offer comes along . Berny is the backup for the three interior positions. Leary will walk next year snd Dallas will receive nothing. I admire the Pats and the way they handle these situations. There are a good example to follow.

I think he's got more value on the team.

I really liked how Leary played last year. I thought he was very good and got overshadowed by Tyron, Fred and Zack.

But, that's part of the issue, the perception may not be there to get good value for him because he's overshadowed by the other guys.

The knee issue and being in the last year of his contract won't help trade value either.

Meanwhile, we have no idea what injuries hold for us on the O-Line. We could start Collins, see him get injured and then wish we still had Leary. Or Collins may have a longer learning curve than we imagined. Always takes time for young O-Linemen to get used to the wear and tear of the league, the faster speed and all of those stunts and blitzes.

Lastly, competition is a healthy thing in the NFL. I know Collins has been through a lot, but there's nothing wrong with having a veteran push him for a starting spot and vice versa.

I've been going back and forth on it.

On one hand, our offensive line is our biggest strength. Having that kind of depth as insurance is really nice. Especially since Free misses games here and there. And his contract is super cheap.

On the other hand, I feel like that between his cheap contract, his age, and his reputation on this offensive line, if he were included in a package (say Leary plus a 3rd rounder), he could get back a pretty nice RB or DT.

Gun to my head, I think I'd rather keep him as insurance. But it's awfully tempting to see what he could get back in a trade.

so here is a question? how good is Leary? is he considered a top 20 OG in this league? and given his medical history (prior to his draft) what do you think we can get for him? a 4th? 5th? and wouldn't he be more valuable to us than a 4th or 5th round pick.

at this stage, if we are thinking superbowl, its not about how many draft picks you have (like Washington is thinking) but about quality of players and the back ups.

The comp picks are based on the contract received by the departing player, not their draft status.

Thanks for the info, we were not sure, this could be important in making a decision on Leary staying one more year or not.

Leary, and what else gets us AP? I know I'm going to get backlash but I have to ask it ?

The difference is the Pats have viable backups to take the place of the departing players, we've got one player backing up three freaking positions if Leary leaves!

Never give up a position of strength.
I keep Leary UNLESS I get an offer I cannot refuse. But I am not actively shopping him.
And put away the anointing oil on Collins and Green . They haven't proved a thing yet.

It would depend on the trade for me. The questions about Free's health are the primary reasons to keep Leary around IMO because a line of Smith, Leary, Frederick, Martin and Collins is stronger than one of Smith, Bernadeau, Frederick, Martin and Collins. However, Berny is good enough that we could live with him at guard if Free can't go.

Someone blows our socks off, then I say go for it. Otherwise, I love the depth having Leary creates. I do think we'll end up trading him no matter what, though, by the trade deadline.
