Leary: More value as a backup OG or as a trade chip?

Boy so many variables.

The Cowboys could keep him, release Berny and gain $2 mil of cap space.

At this juncture if the Cowboys could get more than 5th out of him, I'd seriously consider it. This is probably going to be his last year in Dallas anyway.

The Cowboys could maybe trade him straight-up for the Miller, the RB at Miami. Heck, they need a guard.

I don't think we release Berny as he's our backup at C as well. Green might develop to be a backup at center but that might take a year or two. I don't think we've ever tried Leary at center. If neither Fred or Berny were available, I expect that Martin would be the guy to have to snap the ball.

Can't get anything for him with that knee. He's far more valuable here.

And somebody is bound to get hurt, so let's enjoy some offensive line depth for a change.

Remember 2008-2012?

I've been going back and forth on it.

On one hand, our offensive line is our biggest strength. Having that kind of depth as insurance is really nice. Especially since Free misses games here and there. And his contract is super cheap.

On the other hand, I feel like that between his cheap contract, his age, and his reputation on this offensive line, if he were included in a package (say Leary plus a 3rd rounder), he could get back a pretty nice RB or DT.

Gun to my head, I think I'd rather keep him as insurance. But it's awfully tempting to see what he could get back in a trade.

If Collins starts and we trade Leary, then it would mean our backups (which should have been a strength), are now average with a lot of unknows behind the starters. It'd be mainly Bernadeau, CGreen (rookie), and who else? That'd be very sad. Unless Green proves he can play.and not be injury prone.

I don't know. He's still young, he's on a cheap contract, and Jeremy Parnell got $32 million as a backup. I know the knee will hurt his value, but I think he still has value. All these teams that wanted Collins so badly-- how much would they give up for Leary? Miami for instance... they wanted him badly cause they need OL help and they drafted Ajayi... any chance a Leary for Miller swap could actually happen? As much as I want the depth... I don't know if I could turn that down.

We get a comp pick for an UDFA?

From what I can gather you get a complimentary pick for a player on your roster whose contract expires and is signed as an unrestricted free agent for a good contract to another team.

I see nothing mandating that the player had to have been a prior draft selection.

I like your thinking.

This is why gun to my head, I'm keeping Leary. Unless something really good came along, like Miller from Miami or Leary + a 3rd rounder could get AD. I'd have to say yes to those. But again, I agree that a lot of this depends on how soon Green looks NFL ready. If he doesn't, then our biggest strength could become a problem.

Maybe at the end of August. Let's see what we have first, and how healthy the team is.

Much like with Peterson, let's drive up the value of Leary before pulling the trigger. He just doesn't have the longevity in front of him to fetch much in a trade unless multiple teams are clamoring for him.

Whether it's Leary or Free's spot, Collins is starting from Day 1.

Collins is a rookie and there is a good chance that he won't be an upgrade to Leary or Free until he gets some playing time. I think this board vastly overrates the impact that most rookies have.

Simple. What would New England do? Quality starter + Last year of contract + Replacement is already on team = Trade Bait.

Keep him...more valuable as a backup if in fact he loses his starting spot to Collins.

Won't be an upgrade until he gets some playing time? Sounds like you are eating your own tail with that argument.

I'm not so sure. I see a less mature player than Frederick, less ready than Martin.

I think it's better than 50-50 if we are talking guard, but he's still a rookie. Not a great wonderlic score so it might take more time.

Martin. Smith. Fredrick. All first round offensive linemen, all started from Day 1.

Collins was a projected Top 10 pick cut from the same cloth. He's starting from Day 1.

Can't really release Bern as he's our only backup center unless they're going to try to get Green or Collins to do that.

Green would cement his spot on the roster if he could do that.
