Jerry gave him a big signing bonus for a reason. Lots of teams were interested. Still don't know why he didn't grab him in the seventh round and save that money.

He received the same pay as a 7th round pick, but they guaranteed part of it up front. By the end of his rookie year, he had received exactly the same amount as a 7th round pick would have received.

PEOPLE get this straight. Waters is not coming to training camp. He is not going to be here during camp. He will not sign while camp is still going.
Not for the portion of camp in California, I'm pretty sure he will be signed by practice time on Monday; Tuesday at the latest.

When he was drafted, I heard his career was going to be five years maximum because of his degenerative knee.

Hopefully, this isn't a sign that it's already in decline.

More reason to get Brian Waters in here.

Wrong!

Jonathan Vilma was diagnosed with the same condition (osteochondritis dissecans) in high school. Since then, he has played 4 years in college and is in his 10th year in the NFL.

Then why didn't anyone draft him, and why did Jerry guarantee most of his rookie salary in order to get him to come here?

That's unheard of for an undrafted free agent.

That is a much bigger man grinding and squatting on that knee than Vilma. Plus, I'm certain there are varying degrees of concern related to that condition.

But seventh round picks don't have $200K guaranteed in their contract. Ever.

So it could be Smith-Waters-Frederick-Bernadeau-Free to start the season hopefully. If no one else gets hurt.

The Giants aren't great on the defensive line anymore. Umenyiora is gone, and JPP might not play. Tuck is old and ineffective these days.

By the end of the year, the guarantee makes Zero difference between him and a 7th round pick.

So what? Teams like the Patriots sometimes pay weekly salaries to PS players that hit about $150k for the year. Just a different way of getting more roster spots

It's like a promise you won't cut him. Undrafted free agents AND seventh round picks don't get such promises unless their talent is worthy of a much higher pick.

Teams strayed because they were told he would likely have a short career.

Funny that Vilma is mentioned. He is also having knee surgery today, but is expected to be ready for game 1.

When he was signed, it was thought that microfracture surgery might be in his future.

http://sportsblogs.star-telegram.co...ght-need-microfracture-surgery-in-future.html

"They believe the knee will hold up in the short term but the negative long-term prognosis is why the Memphis product went from a possible third round prospect to undrafted."

But that's not the same as saying his career will be 5 years max.

"Might" need and "will" need are two completely different things.

Obviously no team took the gamble that "might" wouldn't turn into "will" in the 7 rounds of the draft.

Let the optimism for the season grow.

To me it looks like more of the same. I bet if the team sucks this year we get a new head coach and still not a better offensive line

I think that's not only possible but probable.

Why the 2-6 week range? Simple scope is nothing and not even close to that range. I was fine 7 to 10 days after mine. Don't see it being near the 6 week range if its a simple scope like inflamed tissue removal.

It's expected to be two, and he'll be ready for the Giants.

However, they might find something not expected; hence, the six.
