This seems to be the focus on this forum the past few days...

So I went and checked the stats of league wide completion percentage, and it is unusually high across the league.

There are 4 QBs right now that are at 70% or higher. They are

Drew Brees - 75%
Kirk Cousins - 71%
Matt Ryan - 70%
Marcus Mariota - 70.3%

3 other QBs are right there at 69% - Wentz, Newton, and Rivers

You then drop down one more tier, and you have 4 at 67% - Luck, Carr, Manning, and Winston

We then get to what seems to be around league average at 66% - 8 QBs, including Prescott, fall into this category.

The QBs below the average are Brady, Mayfield, Smith, Trubisky, Dalton, Keemun, Rodgers, Flacco, and Bortles

However, it’s best to look number of throws when judging completion % so I will toss out Mariota since he has less than 300 pass attempts at this point in the season along with Winston.

So the QBs to judge Prescott to that have a similar number of pass attempts (he has 364)

Philip Rivers - 344 attempts, 69.5%
Carson Wentz - 330 attempts, 69.7%
Derek Carr - 384 attempts, 68.5%
Drew Brees - 384 attempts, 75.5%
Patrick Mahomes - 391 attempts, 67.5%
Deshaun Watson - 364 attempts, 66.5%
Mitchell Trubisky - 321 attempts, 65.4%
Baker Mayfield - 354 attempts, 63.3%
Alex Smith - 328 attempts, 62.2%
Andy Dalton - 365 attempts, 61.9%
Joe Flacco - 379 attempts, 62.2%
Blake Bortles - 369 attempts, 60.4%

So going by these numbers, Dak is right there with Deshaun Watson. The players Dak best out, 2 of them are now benched and another is a rookie.

So let’s compare Deshaun Watson and Dak Prescott a little more

Deshaun Watson - 364 passes, 66.5%, 3,031 yards passing, 8.3 average, 21 TDs, 9 INTs, sacked 41 times, 101.1 rating

PFF has him rated #15

Dak Prescott - 364 attempts, 66.8%, 2,675 yards, 7.3 rating, 14 TDs to 5 INTs, sacked 45 times, 95.4 rating

PFF has him rated #19

Looking around the league at completion % averages, Dak’s completion % becomes far less impressive.

This is mediocre QB play.

In my opinion completion percentage doesn't mean jack squat anymore. Take a look at the 4 QB's that are completing 70%+.... only one of those guys (Drew Brees) is currently in the playoffs. Back in the day completion percentage carried a lot of weight, but as you can see almost every starting QB completes 65%+ of their passes.

Mods: can you remove the “Der” in the title. Not sure why that is there.

When I started looking at these stats, it was surprising that the average is around 66%. Just a few years ago, it was 62%.

Penalties along with camp restrictions are seriously impacting defenses.

Yessir. They were talking about this very topic on The Herd (Colin Cowherd's show) last week. Colin said something similar to what I said above, it's starting to really become sort of meaningless (it certainly still has meaning but not as much as it once did).

It has become a wide open passing league, QB #'s are through the roof as far as completion %. To think that we are in a wide open passing league, the NFL encourages a wide open passing game with no hitting the qb etc and yet Dak is struggling to get 20 TD's passing this year. Come the playoffs we will need everything to be absolutely 110% perfect for us to win the game. Any defensive breakdowns or running game stuffed we will need Dak to do it through the air, Can he do that?

Give Dak a real receiver and an Oline and the kid balls out. Compare him over the last 4 games, or 2016 when he had a real line. A complete stud. Extension on the way!!!!!

its not his fault, he needs a great OL, at least one great WR, great Running game, really good TE, and throw in a nice slot WR and capable 2nd WR and then he can be good (sarcasm fully intended)

in 2016 he didn't ball out.....he was 23rd in passing and middle of the pack in TDs. in the first 7 games we scored around 20. in the past 5 games we score around 21.4.....not a big difference, even though his percentage has gone up and his passing yards have gone up too, it hasn't translated to points.....this past game against the saints, everyone was gaga over his completion percentage, yet we only scored 13 points and if not for the defense we would have been screwed against 30th ranked pass defense...

Give most of those QBs a “real O-Line and receivers” and they will do well...

Kirk Cousins has 70% completion.

Dak is still middling. He should get a Blake Bortles-like contract, but Jones gonna Jones

Dont understand the rush to sign an average qb to a long term contract

Not as middling as your understand of the QB position.

That 4 game win streak must have you reeling. Big contract coming.

In that 4 game win streak, he had an average performance against the Saints, and looked awful for most of the game against the Falcons who have one of the worst defenses in the league...

You’re also failing to make a valid argument...again.

Carr doesn’t have a great offensive line nor does he have great receivers, he currently has 68% completion and a rating of 95.2. That’s all with Gruden blowing the team up around Carr...

I don’t think you understand the QB position or the league they play in now. This is the easiest era for QBs and it’s just getting easier. You can get by in this league with average RBs and average WRs due to the rules...

Dak is mediocre. Troll better, not harder.
