Let me go on record about Hamlin

I am not in agreement with giving him a lucrative long term deal. The CB position on this team is as good as any in the history of this organization. Between Courtney Brown, Pat Watkins, and Anthony Henry we should be able to get enough productivity out of the FS position. Will there be anyone in the NFL with that much money tied up in the Safety position or the secondary for that matter? And this has been done at the expense of what other positions? Our thinnest position on the team (and has been for some time) is the WR position. We don't draft it....we try to get by with ex-QBs, heck we even invest 2nd round picks in TEs...but we just don't address the WR position. Which is why this team could be in trouble right in the middle of the prime years for Romo. We will always be on the free agent merry go round at WR because we have no one in the pipeline capable of being "the man". If we did, they would have been playing by now.

I would much rather lock up Hamlin, lock up Burnett (because he has something no other ILBer on this team has: real speed) and be in positio to extend Tank and Pac. What is eveyone else's feeling in Cowboy nation?

I think safety is a little bit underrated as far as positions of impact. In my opinion, any player at any position can have high impact on games if he's good. Ed Reed and Ronnie Lott come to mind, far as impactful safeties.

Having said that, I think the era of the in-the-box strong safety is coming to a close. In this day and age, it's much more important that a DB be able to cover than lay the wood. It just so happens that Hamlin does both well. Plus, he's smart and a great leader. He's just a great football player, and we need all of those we can get.

How quick some people forget what that FS position looked like before we got Hamlin...

consider how bad the CB position looked....I personally don't want to see any Safeties on the field when teams go 4 and 5 wide....line up Henry at FS and let Admam , Terrance, Scandrick, Jenkins, and Ball/Ogelsby get in the face of their man

Exactly. We finally get a pro-bowl caliber FS after years of struggling with the likes of Tony Dixon and sub-par mediocre play and we just want to let him walk out the door? Don't take players like Hamlin for granted.

Teams are using more multi-receiver sets these days and I think we'll see defenses counter with fewer safeties and more corners on the field. But if I have a safety who happens to be one of my best defensive players, I want him in there.

This kind of puts the "zOMG Roy is overpaid!!" screams into perspective.

Thanks for making me realize that some fans will always ***** about something, including keeping pro bowl players on the team.

Hamlin's long term deal means he will be moved to strong safety in my opinion. Roy will be cut at some point and the transition will occur.

no....in the salrary cap era you cannot keep everybody.....we won 3 super bowls losing people all along the way because everyone cannot be retained. need to lock up canty, need to extend ware.....if all works out tank and pac man will need to be exteneded.....AND if Roy Williams the WR becomes available next year...cap room will be needed to bring him in.

Wrong. We can keep Hamlin and Canty and still be healthy in terms of the salary cap.

At this point hamlin can walk and I wouldn't care at all.

Jerry Jones single handedly gave Hamlin his career back, made the guy a ton of cash in the long run, and hasn't been seen in valley ranch since last season.

Bye Ken, don't let the door hit you.

so you would be OK with Ken Hamlin being the highest paid Safety in the NFL?

After Tuesday he will either have a new deal or he would have signed his tender.

Jerry didn't exactly break the bank signing him last year , so it's not like Jerry took a huge risk and Hamlin owes him.

Has Jerry made a deal lately that has put us in Cap trouble? Jerry learned his lesson during the early part of this decade about the Salary cap and how it can kill you if you don't mamange it properly. He never does a deal that puts this team in a bind. Wish people would stop bringing up salary cap as a reason why we shouldn't sign Hamlin. They seem to forget that signing Hamlin to a long term deal will lower his cap number.

If it came to that for 1 season, yes. Thats just how it works these days. Next season, someone else will get a bigger pay day and Hamlin will no longer be the highest paid safety in the NFL.

And realistically, I could care less what his contract looks like. As long as he has a reasonable cap number, who cares?

Total contract amount doesn't matter anymore because teams inflate the numbers just to boost the players pride. Take a look at Nate Clemens contract. He won't see a VERY LARGE portion of that contract because so much of it just voids if they release him with like 2 seasons left.

"Highest Paid Status" doesn't matter to me. If he has a cap friendly reasonable contract, I'm all for it. Even if that means he gets to be the hero for 1 season.

Hamlin walked into a perfect position with this team, used it to it's fullest and likely wants to be paid exponentially more than he ever woulda made had he not walked into the perfect storm provided him with our defense.

I do think he owes jerry, as a matter of fact.
