Let's be critically honest about this offense

Anyone who thinks they're more than the 5-5 team they are today hasn't been paying attention. They should still be 6-5 soon, I see just about no scenarios where they beat the Saints though.
The way the Saints are playing it's going to be a long day for this defense and then inept offense not helping them out it will be a long day for us as it looks on paper right now but anything can happen but I'm not real hopeful about that first I'm just going to hope they beat Washington and worry about the Saints next week but the way the Saints played the other day and dismantled Philadelphia it don't look good and all the people post it on what qualifies as a tier 1 team I would say look at the Saints and then the guy that said we're not a tier 1 team I believe this couch coach is right on the ball

A group of blind men heard that a strange animal, called an elephant, had been brought to the town, but none of them were aware of its shape and form. Out of curiosity, they said: "We must inspect and know it by touch, of which we are capable". So, they sought it out, and when they found it they groped about it. In the case of the first person, whose hand landed on the trunk, said "This being is like a thick snake". For another one whose hand reached its ear, it seemed like a kind of fan. As for another person, whose hand was upon its leg, said, the elephant is a pillar like a tree-trunk. The blind man who placed his hand upon its side said, "elephant is a wall". Another who felt its tail, described it as a rope. The last felt its tusk, stating the elephant is that which is hard, smooth and like a spear.

The point is, every week people post their assessments and thoughts on the results they see. As the team wins and loses these assessments change. Unfortunately this team will need to show the entire season before any of us, who have no real knowledge of this game from a professional stance, for us to make a semi-accurate assessment of the 2018 Cowboys.

What we can take from this is.

There are a few plays which change the outcome of games, positive or negative.

Dropped interception
Dropped touchdown pass
Unsportsmanlike conduct hitting a ball carried out of bounds
Dak taking a drive killing sack by holding the ball too long

These plays normally would be the dagger to the heart for this team. Marry that with the normal holding penalties at critical times and the 2018 Dallas Cowboys would lose this game normally.

However

Esch intercepted a pass
Esch broke up what could have been a touchdown pass
Esch made a tackle while engaged with a lineman to stop a third down
Dak ran the option and bulldozed a linebacker for a touchdown
Zeke too one to the house through the defenses middle for a touchdown
Gallup came back for a catch for a first down to keep a drive alive
Beasley had two catches which sustained a drive (pay that man his money)

This may not have been a top flight defense, but the Dallas offense did enough to win. Dak, in bus driver mode, moved the team and exploited the interception for a touchdown.

Those hand full of plays which normally scuttles Dallas were answered by plays that changed the game for Dallas. And while some can argue what a lousy defense the Falcon's have, their offense was rated between 8-10 and the Dallas defense with parts missing held them to 19 points.

We get another shot Thursday to see how this team will respond. Perhaps all the Dallas is back and the it was a terrible defense need to just wait on the results.
Good review, TwoDeep3

I like what Michael Vick said about him. He said that Dak needs to trust what he sees. It is almost like Dak doesn't exactly trust his own arm at times. I think that Dak needs to learn to trust himself and trust his arm to get the ball to the target that he sees. It explained quite a bit actually, and I hang this on the coaches. The coaches are supposed to help develop players, and Dak, in trying to avoid interceptions, isn't taking the best opportunities as they arrive. The pass to Cooper on the sidelines in nearly double coverage was a perfectly placed ball. If he can do that more, I think he'll be better. I appreciate him taking care of the ball. He just needs to get to the next level of QB play. However, I don't trust the coaches to help him get there. I think that, with a coach like Reid or anyone from his tree (like Nagy who's been BRILLIANT with Trubisky), Dak CAN get to that level of trusting his vision better.

Good post, fella'!

The offense could only score 22 against one of the worst defenses in the NFL giving up 27 ppg.

Yes, the defense has improved and seems to be the strength of the team but the name of the game is points. And it is not a shut down defense.

Elliott is playing great and the OL seems to be better; however, our run game is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Scoring in the low 20's isn't going to get it done.

The reality is that the Cowboys have beaten two 2nd tier non playoff teams with losing records that are pretty evenly matched with them as the scores would indicate. And it is great to put two wins back to back and away at that; however, this team is not a tier 1 team.

The scheme sucks, every other team carves Atlanta up.

Agree completely but here is the thing. Nobody is going to blow us out. Even if it did happen it's not going to happen consistently.

We just play a brand of football that is really a coin flip regardless of who we play.

There is almost no margin for error with this team because of the lack of explosive plays.
Man you nailed it! This is the best way to describe this team!

Agreed, although I believe it is due to vanilla play calling more than an inept amount of talent on field. Our offensive game plan every week is to run the same offensive game plan every week. Predictably keeps the other teams in game. Romo was able to overcome this due to his insane game knowledge, and knack for extending plays with his scrambling. (Not a knock on Dak, they're just different players, and Dak doesn't have guys like Parcells etc to help improve his mental game)
I think a lot of the avg fan really think these other teams have the secret sauce playbook with a ton of never before saw plays and that's just not the case. If you watched one of these dynamic teams you'd see they run a lot of the same stuff every week too.

Skins will be playing with a backup QB. We should handle them. I was impressed by the defense against Atlanta. I expected to get smoked. My point is the top teams are scoring point at an all-time pace. I believe Dallas can win the division because the rest of the teams are really bad with the exception of the Eagles who have a SB hangover. They could get hot. The Saints and the Rams are the teams I measure us against. How do we compete with the 35 point a game teams in the playoffs on the road? A playoff birth will be enough to secure the red headed genius for another year and may lock us into a $100 million dollar QB I like, but is not a $100 million QB.

I don't disagree with the success of Rams, Saints and even KC. Cowboys will get their shot at Saints so we will see. What I am getting to is defense has won SB. NY Giants took down Pats when they were the highest scoring team in the league that season in large part because of their defense. I think great defense can still give your team a great chance of winning. As for Garrett future I really do not care, if he can manage to get this team to post season and win then I have no problem of his return. If he fails and gets fired so be it, he was given ample time. What I will not agree with is firing because many fans do not like him. To me it should be based on winning and if this team were to make it say to the NFC championship game then him staying I have no issue with.

Yep and all those little plays the underneath dump off's to Zeke the comback routes by Gallup and Cooper, Swaim catching and rumbling for a first, the OL blocking both for the run and the pass - everything works as one cohesive unit. They win and lose as a team. But this is how it goes today - we win it's only because of Zeke, we lose, it's only because of Dak.

Dak takes a lot of crap over those short passes and while I like taking the occasional shots down field my main interest is this offense moving the all down field and those 4 and 5 yard passes set us up in 2nd and 5, 2nd and 6 and that makes moving the chains and keeping defense off balance. Pats have won more SB than any team in recent years and they are not doing off throwing the deep ball all the time, they throw those same short passes and slants picking up 4 and 5 yards and keeping down and distance in their favor.

I hear you. However, my assessment is based more on predictably, than it is secret sauce. As someone who has never played football past my teens, it's pretty sad that our coaching staff is being criticized by Madden players. I literally feel like Tony Romo in the booth when watching this offense. "So right here, we're going to run a bootleg run option. It probably won't work, because I can see it."

True.

However, what you're missing is that we are ball control team. That means we hold onto the ball longer which means fewer scoring chances.

Madden players are notorious for not having a clue.

Watching drive after drive that take less then 3 minutes on MNF I have some legit concerns

Here is the thing with the Cowboys vs teams like the Saints or Rams.

Dallas will do a good job of holding them to 3 instead of 7 and we will hold the ball forever so we will have a chance to win at the end of the game just like we do every week.

The way we play it's going to be hard for any team to put up a lot of points because time will just simply not allow it unless we go down a couple scores early and force Dak to throw but we're playing such good defense that it's probably not going to happen.

Running QB's have been the defenses downfall and Goff doesn't pose that threat and Breese isn't as nimble as he used to be.

I can see it happening like that .... I can also see a shoot out too

if NO can't run ... it's an even game, we need our DTs

We run the ball because WE ARE DESIGNED TO. Dak was not around in 2014. Yet we ran the ball to set up the pass back then. So we run the ball because our offense is built that way. You think we drafted Fredbeard, Martin and T. Smith for pass protection? No they were drafted to block so we can run the ball. Even before Dak was around.

So this thing about us running the ball because we can't pass is a silly argument. We run the ball because that's what our offense does first. The run comes first before the pass.

We drafted Fred, Tyron and Martin to protect Romo because our OL was god awful back then. Then We finally figured out we got a great line to run the ball in 2013? With Murray. Our owner and coaches aren’t that smart. The move was to create more balance and prolong Romos career.

This thing about we can’t pass if we can’t run is REAL. If Zeke doesn’t have a good game we don’t win. Period.

Of course we can't pass if we can't run the ball. The run sets up our passing game. Yet our moronic coaches can't even take advantage of play action or bootlegs to open up the passing game.

Our passing game became much more effective in 2014. The last year Callahan was in charge of our run game. Ever since then our offense became a run-oriented offense. Not because of our passing offense. or lack thereof. Its because we are built to run the ball.

Dak often has problems hitting down field receivers...even when open. That and I feel the team/Dak are protecting sustained drives (if only they would score touchdowns in the Red Zone).

Kind of like an 'adapted' West Coast offense.
