all signs are pointing to him leaving after this year for Head Coaching job. Now I know it would be hard for Jerry to ask Wade to step down after a good season....but doesnt Garrett give Dallas the biggest upside long term? Much of this teams success has come from the offensive side of the ball that has surpased everyone expectations. When Garrett was signed...we heard about how he is extremely intelligent, has charisma, great work ethic and he is young.....arent these the qualities we want to guide the Cowboys for the next 10 years? I think it would be one of the greatest coaching blunders of our time...if Jerry gets swept away with the current winning season...and lets Garrett walk.

I personally think Jerry pays him to stay.

Wade signed a 3 year deal I believe. I thought I read when he was hired about them being so happy to be in Dallas. Him and Romo have a great relationship and he is in line. You can't just get rid of Wade, our defense needs him.

We'll see I guess.

What signes are pointing to Garrett leaving? As for his ability to be a HC none of us know that one way or the other. Norv was a great OC and has done nothing as a HC. I don't know if that will be the case with Jason or not and hopefully he will one day get a chance at being the HC in Dallas but I don't think that is going to happen after this season.

Realistically, I'm inclined to lose him. It's going to happen one way or another. Someone is going to offer him a HC position. Doesn't make sense for him to wait around for the Cowboys HC position. It may never happen.

It's like having a guaranteed chance to shag Britney Spears but turning her down for a "chance" with Carmen Elektra. Not gonna happen.

What signs are you pointing to?

The fact that he coaches an offensive unit which was a force last year under Sporano (Top 5), who just happens to still be here?

The fact that this is his first time as an offensive coordinator, second year as any type of coach in his ENTIRE CAREER?

That he has a cool nickname?

I'm sure one day he will get a chance as a HC but there have been many great OC who did not get a HC job after only 1 season. I think Jason will get his shot and I do think it will be with the Cowboys within 4 years

I think Jerry has already promised him the HC job here. That was part of the new hire at OC. I don't believe the conventional "wisdom" that proposes that you jump at any HC position no matter where it is. JG is not desperate, and will become the ultimate HC right here in Dallas.

I commented on this is another thread. I agree with Wood that Garrett likely will be gone. The in-game adjustments the Cowboys are making look phenomenal to me and have not escaped the notice of analysts around the league. While I recognize the players are making Garrett look like a genius, young offensive minded coaches are at a premium these days. If the Cowboys go to the Super Bowl, Garrett is going to get a long look by teams looking for a HC around the league.

I think Wade Phillips is going to want to continue to be the head coach of the Cowboys for several years. I think Jerry will not be able to hold on to Garrett that long....so I think he'll go.

First there has to be a job opening, what jobs could their be a vacancy.

There will be some opening as there are every season. I do think people are getting carried away thinking after 1 season Jason will be gone.

I thought this was gonna be a thread on how he managed this offense.

Anyways...

I have NO DOUBT, ABSOLUTELY NONE that Jerry will find(or already has a plan) a way to keep him in Dallas as OC for atleast ONE MORE YEAR.

When it comes to matters such as "handling the signing of TO" and "keeping Garrett in Dallas" THAT is where I am most comfortable in Jerry GETTING/KEEPING what/who he wants.

In Summary: Jerry will make it happen.

Leaving Dallas after a year is a high risk of short term gain for Garrett... whereas staying for an extra year as OC in Dallas has a less risk/MORE benefit to Garrett.

Besides if Garrett stayed another year and then left he would STILL have a GREAT shot at being a HC for some other team.

Agreed. That is why I thought this thread was gonna be about his OC coaching style

I think Garrett will go the route Sean Payton went. He will accept a HC job if its offered (highly likely) and make the team in his image and hopefully catch lightening in a bottle. Lets not forget...The saints were horrible when Payton took over and look what he did in one single off-season. A few good draft picks and good FA pick-ups can turn a last place team into a first place team quickly. Garrett will not pass up a HC job. If I am Jerry ....I offer him an insane amount of money to stay and just hope he can wait another year or two before taking HC job with Dallas.

I believe Tony Romo makes an OC look great, much like Tom Brady did for Charlie Weis. So we will be fine as long as #9 is playing QB. That being said, I love Garrett as our OC. He's home grown, a true Cowboy and he's as smart as any other coach in the league, including Belichik. I'm sure he realizes he has a special and unique talent to work with in Romo.

The opportunity to be the HC of the Cowboys is on a totally different level than the HC of say, the St. Louis Rams. Hopefully Garrett's love for Jerry and the Cowboy organization and a fat contract extension $$ will convince him to stay until Wade steps down.

Maybe Jerry could convince Wade to stay on as DC like Gunther Cunningham did in KC a few years ago. :)

Payton had no personal tie here. Garrett does.

Payton left a mediocre team with a mediocre QB. Garrett would be leaving an elite team with an elite QB.

Payton worked under one of the toughest employers in the league, who placed significant restrictions on his playcalling. Garrett works for one of the most easy going employers in the league that basically lets him do his thing, without restraint.

Payton had spent many many years as an OC before taking the next step. Garrett has one year.

It's just two different scenarios.

Payton served as a OC in NY before he went to Dallas so it was not just looking at 1 season as an OC he also was in coaching at the college level before going to the NFL. It was not a 1 year situation that he jumped from OC to HC

I was just going to ask that question of wether there was any precedence of a team asking the HC to step down to a coordinator position. Would Wade step down at some point to just be Dallas DC?

Wade want to be a HC and has said he wants to be known as a good HC not just a DC
