Besides you all seem to forget that Sean Payton turned down at least 1 HC job offer (Raiders) based on the advice of Parcells. One to 2 years later he accepted the NO job. Kubiak, the HC of the Texans, turned down numerous HC job offers, cause he wanted remain with Shanahan to fully learn OC job.

Garrett is one smart dude and really doubt he will leave Dallas after just one year as HC. He's sure not interested in going to some rinky dink team which lacks the talent and turning it around would be a momumental undertaking. Also amount of control he would have and ownership decision-making process also a factor.

Becoming HC of the Rams might not be his best option; same goes for HC of the Chargers with Smith still GM. I honestly think Jerry and Jason sat down for a long talk before final decision made whether Jason should be the HC or OC. Frankly, I'd really be surprised if Garrett wants to leave after only 1 year as OC. I think he's probably real interested in studying Wade's handling of HC job and also becoming more knowledgeable about defensive side of the ball which would also be Garrett's responsibility once he becomes HC.

What signs would that be?

Also, to me, it doesn't really matter how much money Jerry Jones pays Jason Garrett, if an opportunity arises where he can get an NFL Head Coaching position and one that has upside and potential then would be foolish not to take it.

If the Dallas Cowboys continue to be successful, we will lose key members of our coaching staff. Heck, we didn't even win a Playoff Game in the Parcells Era and coaches were interviewing and getting jobs on other teams.

Somebody on another board made what I thought was a great point. He noted that Joe Girardi turned down an offer to manage the Marlins (sorry if I got the team wrong, maybe it was the Rays), and a year later he was managing the Yankees.

Different sports, but a pretty comparable example IMO.

If the Giants job came available, that might be different. But I doubt Jason leaves to take, say, the Bengals job and forfeits a chance to coach here in a year or two.

And I'm still not sure we couldn't be at least 90% as effective with Sparano. He's no dummy himself, and has been watching all this. And the most important thing is the QB anyway.

I agree and I am not sure there would be a 10% drop.

I personally think the reason why the offense was conservative at times was because of Bill Parcells.

As long as you have your franchise quarterback in place and a compotent OC with open-minded philosophy then the Offense should be fine.

Agreed.

I think he took himself out of the managerial pool for the Chicago Cubs.... his only managing stint was with the Marlins 2 years ago.

There shouldn't be a whole lot of vacancies in the offseason, and guys like Bill Cowher and Martyball will get the nod over Redball in preference.

I think Garrett will go the route Sean Payton went. He will accept a HC job if its offered (highly likely) and make the team in his image and hopefully catch lightening in a bottle. Lets not forget...The saints were horrible when Payton took over and look what he did in one single off-season. A few good draft picks and good FA pick-ups can turn a last place team into a first place team quickly. Garrett will not pass up a HC job. If I am Jerry ....I offer him an insane amount of money to stay and just hope he can wait another year or two before taking HC job with Dallas.

The Saints were not a bad team before Sean got there. They were a team coming off a devastating Hurricane based wreck of a season that played a huge part in their final record.

Peyton was also an OC for a number of years whereas Garrett has been one for 9 games.

we are opening the BEST STADIUM IN THE ENTIRE WORLD in 2 years....we are DALLAS....we have a YOUNG FRANCHISE QB...the NFC is RIPE TO BE DOMINTATED FOR THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE...we have cap room...we have a young defense that will only get better....the Commanders will be undergoing a coaching change soon...the Giants will probably be undergoing a coaching change soon...the Eagles will probably undergoing a coaching change and rebuilding soon...everything is in place for him to be the Head Coach here at a GREAT time for a LONG time...with that as the backdrop....if he still wants to leave maybe he is not as bright as we think he is!

Quick questions for everyone.

Wade Phillips is 8-1. Now, I know his record in the playoffs is spotty at best but would it be all that bad to have Wade Phillips coaching this team for the next several years?

I may be in the minority but I am not on the Replace Wade with Garrett in 2 years Scenario.

I would not be upset by it. He has done a very good job thus far and the players both offense and defense believe in him

Me neither.

The tricky thing is, I wouldn't get rid of a coach that was winning. And if the team did start drastically underachieving, I'm not sure you just want to promote an assistant. Usually you'd like more of a change in culture than that.

I guess everyone hopes we are a top team for a couple of years and then Wade just retires to let Garrett keep the thing rolling. :) But things rarely go that smoothly.

I have a horrible feeling that Jerry has a knack for employing young OCs who are brilliant young HC in waiting with an older HC not wantin to leave

What signes are pointing to Garrett leaving? As for his ability to be a HC none of us know that one way or the other. Norv was a great OC and has done nothing as a HC. I don't know if that will be the case with Jason or not and hopefully he will one day get a chance at being the HC in Dallas but I don't think that is going to happen after this season.

well you saved me from having to post.... :laugh2:

p.s. if you don't count this one of course.

You mean like letting Norv Turner go? :laugh2: This is Wade 1st year as our HC and he is doing a damn good job why would I want him gone? I love Garrett but we really don't know what kind of HC he would be and if we are going to sit here and play the what if game then what if Wade takes this team to the SB and Jerry fires him to promote Garrett to HC and Jason fails then once again Jerry is the idiot.

The christ-like qualities attributed to Jason Garrett are getting out of hand.

This offense was 5th in total offense, 4th in scoring offense last year (with a finished Drew Bledsoe and first-year Tony Romo at QB). It's not like Redball took a squad filled with Quincy Carter's and Troy Hambricks and painted them up all respectable-like for a playoff run. This offense has simply taken the next step, and yes - Jason Garrett is a part of that.

But this current squad is 8-1 - and it didn't even come close to that level of play last season. Wade came in, and we may have skipped a couple levels to get where we are now.

If Garrett wants to walk - let him walk. We'd like to have a Cowboy around, but if he earns a head coaching job, let him go. But if we keep this up - we never fire Wade just to get to the young new hotness. That's bad business, and it's just stupid. I think we ought to quit obsessing over Jason "Red Jesus" Garrett and enjoy the fantastic level of play that Wade Phillips has this team at. In any other season we'd be sure super bowl favorites. So why are we talking about moving on from the head coach that has this team playing like super bowl contenders?

Just say no to moving to Jason Garrett simply because we might lose his services.

Wade want to be a HC and has said he wants to be known as a good HC not just a DC

He also said he never thought he'd have the opportunity be a HC again.

I'm with ya buddy. If you break down the per drive numbers the '07 offense is only marginally better than the '06 offense. And that can be easily explained by (1) Romo improving slightly, (2) having Romo in for all the games rather than the Romo/Bledsoe split, and (3) having Davis instead of Rivera.

Garrett came and pretty much only change the terminology with slightly different emphasis in the passing game. Hell, the blocking schemes are still Sparano's.

I'm not saying Garrett isn't a good coordinator, because he is. It's just that if we lost him, we wouldn't necessarily lose much.

The only way Garrett is leaving is if the Cowboys win the Superbowl.

If they don't then Garrett will want to stay at least one more year to do it because he knows this team has a great chance to win it all this year and the next couple.

Do you really think he would pass up a Superbowl Championship to leave for a major rebuilding job next year?
