Jerry as head coach... Where do people get this stuff...

I don't think they mean literally. Just that he wants a glorified coordinator to have the HC title while he pulls the strings.

Not saying this is what he's doing, but I think that's what people mean when the mention JJ as HC.

I know it, but I don't think that's gone on nearly as much as people think. Deion and co. started it, but I don't think that's the reason that, for instance, we were awful under Campo. I think it was just bad coaching and, mostly, zero talent.

I'd like to be crazy excited about Garrett. He's like my generation's Clint Longley, only better because he was around so long. I never understood why, but they'd seemingly always show the guy on broadcasts standing there with the headphones. The only trouble I have with getting excited is, I have no tangible reason to get excited. The consensus is that he's a brilliant football guy. OK. That's nice. So are alot of people.

Why are you excited about him - specifically - why should I GET excited about him? I don't know. My wife's a Dolphins fan. Culpepper was worse than ever and Harrington (in a system that worked for him) was slightly better than crap. I don't judge position coaches really on their unit's performance, because let's be honest, Culpepper and Harrington really are crap - so there's not much to be accomplished there. Plus, I have examples on our team, ie Sparano, wherein the unit was atrocious because of circumstances beyond his control, he is promoted, and he's fantastic as an offensive guy.

In addition, I am not interested in doing this bizarre HC in waiting scenario. For my aprt, if I was Wade or Norv, why would I want to come here to be replaced by Garrett? Nope, if Garrett is GOING to be the head coach, just go ahead and make him the head coach now, and commit to that long-term. No reason to draw it out and waste time.
The Head Coach in waiting "crap" is nothing new under the sun. When the Rams let Vermeil go it was because they didn't want to lose Martz. That avenue failed a bit, but they were the first team to even do that.

I'll tell you why I am so high on Garrett. He reminds me of Tom Landry. An absolute student of the game. That is so rare. When the guy is a 3rd string QB and a 3 time Super Bowl winning QB listens to him it speaks volumes to me.

Dave Campo said, "I'm telling you, Garrett was Aikman's coach." How can that be ignored? All he needs is a chance and I think we can expect great things. For the first time, he's going to get it.

I do agree it was more to do with poor GM'ing than anything else. Horrible draft and coaching hires did the most damage, and the undermining environment JJ allowed didn't help, but it wasn't the biggest factor.

By 'every possible candidate" you mean 5 guys who no one else has interviewed for the Head Coach position, with a 6th ( Turner) coming soon. The Dolphins, Cards, Raiders ,Steelers, all picked new coaches and interviewed numerous candidates and Jerry hasnt interviewed ONE guy any of these teams interviewed. Have Norm Chow, Russ Grimm, Jim Mora Jr, Mike Martz, etc been in ? I must have missed it.
Mora has been mentioned as someone we may interview. Who else interviewed him? I must have missed that.

The Steelers didn't hire Grimm...but we should? How does that make sense?

Have you ever considered that not looking at Martz is a good thing? It's an avenue to consider.

I know Norm Chow personally and I like him a lot. He was my coach. I do not think he would be a good Head Coach. I really don't.

Would I have liked to have seen Jerry interview Whisenhunt, Cameron, Petrino, Kiffen, or Tomlin? Not all of them. In fact, only one of them. That would be Whisenhunt. I still like Rivera better than anyone who has been avialable this year and no one could interview him yet while they are still in the Super Bowl. So I don't see where Jerry has missed out on any of them.

I still think he got the best hire of the off season in Garrett. JMO.

Yay Hos! I am certainly on the wagon for Garrett as well. I do recall seeing quotes from Collins of the NYGiants attributing some of his success to Garrett, and the NY coaches praised him as well. Garrett is very sharp, football sharp, and also gets lots of nods as being good with players and being very organized. I personally think he is good enough that Philips is the better choice of the HC front runners, if he is interested.

Anyone who interviews for the Dallas HC position should know it is a two year gig, going in to a team with talent, and a chance to show your mettle.

In an aside: I seem to recall several prospective coaches refusing to interview with the Raiders. Whereas the Cowboys have coaches and ex-coaches stumping to get the position.
