Let's Talk About Will Grier

$2M as compared to the $1M Milton is about to make?

If moving on from Lance was financially motivated we are in massive trouble.
Only the FO knows for sure if his motivation was over money, but I think Lance failed to impress the staff and Jerry well enough during his time with the team. He's with another team now, so Milton is who the Cowboys will be concerned with now and in the future. Let's hope he's handled wisely.

Jerry is always very seriously concerned with the financial aspects of things, although, too much so, imho. That's surely the reason why he and Stephen avoid being more active in vet free agency, as you well know. As long as Jerry is dead set to serve as this team's GM, big trouble will be close at hand. I hope he manages to sign Parsons, but maybe that another story for another day. We'll see.

I think he is better than Milton. I'm not saying its Romo vs Carter or whatever that ended up being with Henson and that whole journey with Testeverde to Bledsoe. But between Carter and Romo, Carter was much more athletic for his time. And he was relatively accurate since he had played quite a bit of baseball.

Still, Romo just did the job better.

That's what you need. Those athletic traits are nice. But it still comes back to what is between the ears. That's why I think Grier has a slight edge on Milton, especially if Milton keeps playing like he did last preseason game.
If I am Shottenheimer I am starting Will Grier against the Ravens. Dallas needs to see what Will can do plain and simple. If Grier can show some poise and play well ,he could gain confidence. He is capable of winning the backup QB job.

Harbaugh seems happy with Lance.

Shoulda just paid Lance.

JM isn’t the same QB as Lance or Rush.

When you pay 1 guy the most ever, trade for another guy you just need to let them play things out. If Dak goes down the chances for either QB coming in and taking this team to a playoff is zero. I'd rather use the roster spot somewhere else

It's low but it's not zero stranger things have happened.... I say you need to open this up to a real competition Greer has to be the starter this preseason game if they're serious about seeing how they start the games off and play most of the game So Milton did that last week greer should do that this week and the best of the two from the other two games in the coaches opinions when they breakdown film should start Game 3 and then split it in half first half will go to the better of the two and then the other one can finish the second half they both get plenty of reps.

That's why I've had to say this more than once I believe it's not a big deal to keep Milton as the number two in the regular season and bring up Will Grier off the practice squad 'cause I don't believe he would be taken off the practice squad he's more safe there than Milton you don't want to end up risking it and losing your draft pick you gave up for the guy.

However if Prescott goes down Milton obviously comes in and Greer is now your back up that game but the next week if you feel you need to go into the games with a better chance to win if that's their mindset then Will Grier becomes your starter and Milton becomes your backup and then you get a 3rd guy for your emergency guy it's not rocket science.....

Need 2 QBs in the NFL.

remember 2015?

When it comes to quarterbacks, I like me some underdogs, especially when we're talking about backups.

Cooper Rush was an underdog who manages to overcome the odds of being non-athletic and having a sub par arm.

I honestly see a higher potential in Grier as far as athleticism than Rush, and probably more pragmatic traits as a QB2 than Milton.

What I saw from Milton yesterday didn't give me much hope he can step in and be the guy unless they put a leash on him and he learns how to manage the game as a proverbial bus driver, which isn't a bad thing at all, especially when we're talking back ups.

My question is, who is QB2 on this team? And does Dallas keep 2 or 3 QBs?

Why?
they may keep 3, if Milton doesn't show vast improvement over the next 3 games. regardless, we don't have a chance. going to a back up, we have even less of a chance that we didn't have in the first place. it doesn't matter.

I see nothing wrong with what Harbaugh and Lance are doing so far. Good for them. You've been Lance's most ardent fan from the start. He wasn't wanted in Dallas, where he failed miserably. Let's simply see what happens.

Lance's and Milton's futures are works in question at this point and it remains to be seen what that will involve. Both Lance and Milton have long journeys before their futures are in the books. Sit tight. It's likely to be an interesting story in the future.

Good Post, If Prescott was to get injured I would play both Grier and Milton and I would play them both to their strengths. Let them do what they do best, with some good coaching combined with a good running game scheme and strong receiving core. I would like to see some Tom Landry quality coaching no matter who is leading from the QB position.

With Tanner McKee already on the roster the Eagles took another young QB late in the draft Kyle McCord . Bringing Grier back kicking the can down the road , for goodness sakes are the Cowboys allergic to drafting a young QB and investing some time in his development.

They should have kept Rush at the least.

Losing Dak at anytime during the season....its over.

just like 2015.

There isnt a DC in the NFL that is going to feel threatened by Grier/JM.

2Man Press the entire game.

Correct

but the only way you're going to see truly which backup quarterbacks better you must give Grier the start in this next game...

I think my suggestion to the coaching staff would be correct then the 3rd game should be started by the guy they evaluate to be the best out of those 2 starts...

Totally agree with you , I wonder how effective Milton would be at Quarterback sneaks, running the option and maybe the Dallas version of the tush push, close to goal line.

I AGREE

I believe the Cowboys staff has already seen enough of Will Grier in practice to know what he's capable of. Of course, that's to his advantage at this point in time. He'll see as much time as this staff needs to get an accurate picture with him as their QB. They likely have quite a good idea of his skills already.

Joe Milton has only been with the Cowboys for far less time and deserves a fair opportunity to find and develop the best parts of himself and his play to expose what he's capable of with a fair degree of accuracy to discover most of his abilities. It will take more reps for him to develop his skills capably.

With those things in house for the Cowboys staff to weigh, I think we should allow them to utilize their knowledge of each QB to learn which one will best be suited to lead this team in the event of Dak's being unavailable for a significant amount of time. I'm inclined to give them credit for having the experience to know what's best to bring out the best in both Grier and Milton as their QBs.

I won't deceive myself into thinking that I'm better inclined to know their business than they are. I'm just voting to trust them with their knowledge and experience to bring Grier and Milton to be the right players to suit the Cowboys. They're best equipped to serve their players to manage and control the teams that they must combat and deal with capably enough to overcome their challenges. They're not amateurs.

They already know what Grier can do. He was given an entire preseason game in 2023 and he played some last week. The guy is a 30-year-old journeyman. They need to continue to develop Milton who they invested a 5th round pick on. After last weeks game he needs to start again and build some confidence. Grier may get some reps on Saturday and he will certainly get some reps in the final preseason game. The preseason is about young players and Milton needs a lot of reps if he’s going to develop.
