Mazi was more raw and needs time to develop - they also screwed with his weight last year so he's not had consistency- I would be willing to bet by mid season he starts to really gel and by this time next year we're talking about how far he has come from when he was drafted
By the time he develops will be in his last year of his rookie deal, and he'll have 39 sacks, 51 FF's, and 103 Tackles for loss!

This is because Mazi has still looked awful in his 2nd training camp.

There's nothing wrong with a tandem of Mazi and Justin Rogers at nose tackle if Mazi was the player you thought you were getting when he was drafted but he's not.
Rogers was a seventh-round pick. If you think there's nothing wrong with relying on him for snaps, especially as a rookie, your thinking is wrong. We have not done that well with late-round NT prospects like him. The last successful one we had was Ratliff.

Plus, with Mazi still hit and miss, we couldn't afford to have our second NT be hit and miss at best. We needed someone who knows what he's doing and how to do it. Just like we needed Phillips at 3-tech instead of what we had behind Odigihizuwa. That signing said nothing about Osa and everything about the quality of our depth.

Yeah you can flush the above response for the nonsense it is.

If Mazi Smith was a legitimate 1st round quality NT, the Cowboys would be fine going into the season with Rogers behind him. He's not so they have to bring in a vet.

I don’t think Mazi can play more than 30 snaps a game.
This is actually a really good point. Last year the Cowboys only had Hankins on the field for 20-25 snaps per game. DQ just had a lot of packages without using a nose on the field. Zimmer is a little bit different style. When Linval Joseph last played for Zim her averaged around 42 snaps per game. We should see these bigger bodies stay on the field more often we have been used to the last couple of years. If Zim doesnt view Mazi as a 3 down player or simply doesnt believe he can get 40+ snaps in depth at the NT position becomes much more important.

Jonathan Hankins signed a 1-yr deal with the Seahawks earlier this year worth $2.05 million, while Joseph just signed a 1-yr deal worth up to $2.5 million with incentives.

Do the Cowboys think that Joseph, a 14-yr vet, is an upgrade over Hankins?
Both are scrubs not worthy of the star.

You have to have depth that can play. Rogers is a seventh-round rookie, so there's absolutely no guarantee with him. I don't think they'd be fine going into the season with Rogers behind him if Mazi was setting the world on fire. We'd still need better depth, just like we do at 3-tech behind Odighizuwa. We didn't get Phillips because we're dissatisfied with Odighizuwa, we got him because we don't trust players like Fehoko to be able to rotate in.

I'm not saying Mazi is all we want him to be at this point, but adding Joseph is just as much, if not more, of a reflection on how poor our depth is. Of course, fans already knew that before we added Phillips and Joseph.

More Stephen and Jerry procrastination and making it up as they go.

Whatever excuses you want to give him he's not the player they thought they were drafting. If he was they wouldn't have brought in Joseph. That's an absolute fact.

It's not an excuse and it's the evaluation that all the experts had on mazi before he was drafted, that is a fact which can be confirmed.

What you are stating on why the coaches brought in Joseph is your opinion.

Mazi being hurt all spring hurt the most. If he’d had 2 months of OTA work where you work mostly on technique there probably would’ve been a much better performance in TC.

He's no coward on sacrificing and being tough.
