Lions considering a trade for a running back
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 16, 2010 11:02 AM ET
When looking for a possible suitor for available running backs like Marshawn Lynch, LenDale White, or even Ronnie Brown, look no further than the Detroit Lions.

"I've talked to agents for several players," Lions G.M. Martin Mayhew said at a pre-draft press conference. "We've talked about trades. We've talked about trading for some players. We talk now about the draft. We'll see how we come out of this."

The Lions have a desperate need at running back. Kevin Smith is coming off a disappointing year and December surgery for a torn ACL. Maurice Morris is just a guy. Basically, the Lions need to see how the draft falls to them and react from there.

Mayhew doesn't have a fifth or sixth-round pick, which could limit flexibility. They have three seventh-rounders.

Choice isn't on the trading block. Barber might be, but probably isn't.

how about a 3rd and 7th for barber, or a 4th and 7th, detroit has a bunch of 7th round picks too

dont want to really trade choice, but if you can get say a 2nd this year and a 7th, and a 2nd or 3rd next year, i might be interested

i would rather trade barber, if somehow if we can get their 3rd, and a 7th, for barber, i say jump for it;

I thought you were adamant Barber wasn't going anywhere?

I doubt they take on the contractual headaches with Barber.

Detroit might go after LenDale White given Schwartz' history in Tennessee.

We'd be crazy to trade Choice. I think he's starting material and I hope we sign him to a long term deal one day.

I would trade Baber for a 2nd, but I doubt anyone would do that.

I have never said it was impossible for him to be traded. I have said the rumors that were circling the Internet of him in a package deal with Crayton to get the #12 pick had no basis in fact. Every player has a price. If someone pays that price or higher we would move him. I just don't expect him to be traded.

I think we'd listen to offers for Barber - but it wouldn't be worth it unless we get a first day pick .... errrr, I mean a first two day plus the first 2 hours Saturday morning pick.

We'd be far better off letting Choice and Barber compete for carries.

What contractual headaches?

The person who trades for him gets him for the next five years at:

2010: $3.86 million
2011: $4.25 million
2012: $5.75 million
2013: $6.25 million
2014: $7 million

If he doesn't work out after two years, you cut him -- there's no cap hit for acceleration and you've only lost about $8 million in the transaction. If he works out after 2 years, you can easily restructure his contract (Barber will be more than happy to receive another bonus check).

You can talk delusions with other posters, but not with me. The price would be high, but there is a price.

You would be fine with paying 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 million dollars for a back who has never had a 1,000 yard season and has not played a full season in the last two? 8 million in two years is a sizeable payout as well. No team is going to touch that, it is just too much bother and risk for a player who is not an affirmed superstar. The contract escalates each year and if a cap returns, it even accelerates if cut if I am not mistaken. I am no cap guru, but I think that is a prohibitive risk for any team.

YES! Considering how injury prone our RBs have been the last couple of years, let's get rid of the QUALITY depth we have at that position! WOOHOO!

how about

1st, 3rd, 6th for Barber and a 5th. That way we even out the RW trade that they hosed us on

Psst...

There is this thing coming up called the Draft. We could replace any player we trade away.

The sky would not be falling. This PSA will self destruct in 15 seconds.

What would it legit take? 3 1st, 3 2nd, 3 3rd rounders?
