You would be fine with paying 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 million dollars for a back who has never had a 1,000 yard season and has not played a full season in the last two? 8 million in two years is a sizeable payout as well. No team is going to touch that, it is just too much bother and risk for a player who is not an affirmed superstar. The contract escalates each year and if a cap returns, it even accelerates if cut if I am not mistaken. I am no cap guru, but I think that is a prohibitive risk for any team.
The average cap hit for starting players on the Lions is somewhere around $4 million. They paid Maurice Morris $3.3 million in salary and bonuses in 2009.

$4 million ain't what it used to be.

how about a 3rd and 7th for barber, or a 4th and 7th, detroit has a bunch of 7th round picks too

dont want to really trade choice, but if you can get say a 2nd this year and a 7th, and a 2nd or 3rd next year, i might be interested

You'll never get 2 picks for Barber I can't see anyone giving up anything more than a 4th for him. He's not a feature back he's had injuries the past 2 seasons and he has an over priced contract.

The "overpriced" piece of his deal is the 16 mill in guaranteed money which we have ALREADY paid out.

I'm amazed at how Cowboys fans over rate Barbers value. No way would we get anything more than a 4th for him.

He's more valuable to keep . . .

I still don't think anyone would want to pay the rest of his contract based off the nagging injuries he's been coming up with the past 2 seasons and his lack of production. He's having trouble just picking up a yard in critical situations. He has the looks of a back who's body is starting to break down from the wear and tear and by the end of the season he's out of gas. He averaged under 3 yards a carry in the playoffs. He was so ineffective the Cowboys stopped going to him. He would have to be dealt cheaply to move him.

I doubt that they would even consider a trade for Barber, given his track record the last few years with injuries and sub par play. I don't want to part with Choice, he is a younger player and great for the locker room, plus he has played well when given the opportunity.

Barber'd be an upgrade for them no matter how you slice it. And the Lions aren't as likely to be delusional about how much Barber has 'slipped' as our fans are.

Of course they'd consider a trade for him. The issue for them would be at what cost?

You can talk delusions with other posters, but not with me. The price would be high, but there is a price.

Not for me with ware, now maybe in 3-4 years, but he is untouchable right now or should be.

Lions considering a trade for a running back

When looking for a possible suitor for available running backs like Marshawn Lynch, LenDale White, or even Ronnie Brown, look no further than the Detroit Lions.

"I've talked to agents for several players," Lions G.M. Martin Mayhew said at a pre-draft press conference. "We've talked about trades. We've talked about trading for some players. We talk now about the draft. We'll see how we come out of this."

The Lions have a desperate need at running back. Kevin Smith is coming off a disappointing year and December surgery for a torn ACL. Maurice Morris is just a guy. Basically, the Lions need to see how the draft falls to them and react from there.

Mayhew doesn't have a fifth or sixth-round pick, which could limit flexibility. They have three seventh-rounders.

i think you need to quit sensationalizing your headlines.

Barber isn't producing much on a real good team so I don't see him doing much on a bad Lions team. The Lions need an explosive back with speed because all defenses have to do against Barber is stack the box and bounce him outside where he's averaged under 3 yards a carry.

Why would anyone trade for Barber when you could probably get a guy like Tate, Hardesty or Gerhart in the second day.

Agreed. Hopefully he changes the dynamics some this year. I expect him to bounce back from his injury last year.

What would it legit take? 3 1st, 3 2nd, 3 3rd rounders?

If you're the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns or the St. Louis Rams and offer me 3 first round picks for Demarcus Ware? Then we have a deal!!!!!

Do you realize we will have 2 first rounders for the next 3 seasons? At least for the next 2 which will mean we will have 3 first rounders in 1 seasons draft class.

We're also talking about a top 10 pick each of those years and I know those are high priced but so is Wares contract. We would have the best new talents for a while.

Our present and future would be secure and dont tell me we could not find a new impact pass rusher in any of those years in the draft because that's where we got Ware and Spencer.

They don't have to pay the rest of his deal. NFL contracts aren't guaranteed. Most balloon in the final years with the salaries kept relatively low in the 1st 3-4 years b/c they are offset by the bonuses.
