Longest Tenured HCs

It was interesting during the Bengals game they threw up the list of the longest tenured HCs. 1-8 only Marvin Lewis and JG have never won a SB heck they haven’t even sniffed one. Belichick, McCarthy, Payton, Tomlin, Harbaugh, and Carroll at least have 1 ring. You could play that game what two things are not like the others. Lol.

Landry won 2 Super Bowls in 29 years.

Jimmy won 2 in 5 years.

I'm not a big fan of Garrett or Lewis but Super Bowl wins are not the only guage of a Head Coach. There are 31 every year that don't win one.

If a HC is with a team for 8 years, there will still be at least 75% of the Head Coaches that have not won a Super Bowl in that time frame.

This tells me if Garrett coaches for the Cowboys or Bengals he has job security.

I love that gif lol

Garrett is a bad HC who give you the illusion of competence because of his cliches. I could argue that THE ONLY reason he's still here is because of his history with the organization as a back up QB. there is no way he's not fired by now if he were originally a back up QB for the dolphins or the skins

This guy is totally incompetent
He's like GB's Bart Starr. The only reason Starr lasted as long as he did as coach in GB was he was a great Packer. The only reason Garrett lasted here was he was a great Cow...well a great backup. lol

Landry had 20 straight winning seasons and made the playoffs in 18 of them. Besides winning 2 SB's he was in 3 others. He coached in 10 NFL/NFC Championship games. Jimmy made the playoffs 3 straight years and won the SB in 2 of them. I don't expect Garrett to win SB's every year but I do expect him to get us deep in the playoffs a lot. Meanwhile we're waiting for Garrett to make the playoffs for 2 straight years. At least he finally posted back to back winning seasons after beating the scrubs of Philly last year. lol

Ok let’s lower our expectations. In this time should they not have at least sniffed a conference championship game. You got one wild card win between the two of them while the other 6 coaches have a lot more playoff success.

Ok, so for consistency, you consider them as going 14-2 in 2016, right?

Barely eeking out a slight W by default over the iggle's scrubs only saved Garrett the embarrassment of a fourth 8-8 season, but the game was still an embarrassment. Anyone who would call that a win is very easy to please.

Compare it in the salary cap era, which makes coaching the great equalizer.

Landry and Johnson are not fair comparisons any more than comparing Jim Brown to a modern day runner. The game is different.

Whatever. I have that performance permanently saved on my DVR to show me what dominance looks like. I may one day show my kids the game so they can see what a big win to close out the season looks like.

That post is not worth responding to
I like X but if a poster brings up Landry to defend Garrett he exposes his own ignorance

Marvin Lewis has 6 losing seasons in 15 years as a HC. Garrett has 1 losing season in 7 years.

And Garrett doesn’t get enough credit for keeping this team in playoff contention from 2011 - 2013. Outside of Romo those teams and had very, very little talent and frankly had no business sniffing contention. The 2011 - 2012 OL was all-time franchise bad.

Given the injuries in 2015, a perfectly reasonable argument can be made that the only year he underachieved was last year. And if Zeke isn’t suspended we probably still make a wildcard.

You could look at it this way, I agree. For all we know Garrett and Romo made 4-12 teams 8-8. One could even make the argument that the '16 team had no business being 13-3. The problem is those teams were bad and everyone looks at the head coach. Those seasons, from 2011-2013 I can describe as disappointing to say the least. Looking back the last thing that comes to mind is that we were in contention. I have to be reminded of that. Chalk that up to parity, because they were far from resembling a good team. Jason Garrett was head coach.

It could be worse. We've had worse coaches and seasons. Seasons I've completely cleared from my memory. So I'm not a Garrett hater. But at the same time I'm not going to give him credit for a bunch of mediocre to poor seasons with a few cherrys sprinkled on top because I just don't know if he underachieved or overachieved.

That has nothing to do with what I said. If someone doesn’t count the last game of 2017 as a win for the reasons you identify, then shouldn’t they considered 2016 a 14-2 season since it was the same with Philly & Dallas reversed?

Didn't mean anything personal Chip, I was only making a general comment.
Personally I totally dislike the idea of sitting our starters. I don't care if they call it a W, L, or draw, I've never agreed with sitting our starters in that situation. I've heard all the arguments pro and con for doing that, but IMO sitting your starters like that is like telling your team it's OK to lose, and it's not.
It's a 16 game season and they get paid to win, or at least TRY.

I agree 100%. The idea is rest and save from injury. Maybe the rest argument has merit if you don’t have a bye. But I’m not on board with injury avoidance. DeShaun Watson wasn’t injured in a game.

Harbaugh has been to a super bowl ... has not won a SB though.

You are making my point for me.
