Looks Like Springs is A Free Man...

I would add springs and keep henry. We could be very versatile with both those guys being hybrid players.

Only if Henry restructures his deal then and gets his cap number down.

The original article:

The Commanders have informed the veteran cornerback that he will be released from the final year of his contract, according to league sources. Springs, a free agent signing in 2004 and a Silver Spring native, will become an unrestricted free agent.

The Commanders will save $6 million in cap space by letting him go - badly needed at this time after the huge signings of CB DeAngelo Hall and DT Albert Haynesworth - and Springs could garner interest from New England, Dallas and Baltimore, among others. The Commanders are still trying to re-sign G Derrick Dockery as well.

UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Shawn, and he confirmed the news. He said he loved being a Commander and his five seasons here, but understands the business side of things.

"They did what's best for the team, and I'm happy for them," Springs said. "I'm going to miss my friends there, but as long as it makes the team better, I understand. I'm a true fan of the sport."

Springs's departure means that of the free agent/trade class of 2004 - the first of the Joe Gibbs regime - only DT Cornelius Griffin and RB Clinton Portis remain (at least that I can think of; working on 90 minutes of sleep warps your brain).

Why would you want to cut Henry?

He knows the scheme, has played safety before in the NFL and actually gets injured less than Springs. I say keep Henry and see if we can sign Springs rather cheaply. Get rid of Courtney Brown.

I dont mind keeping Henry if he reduces his cap hit. I don't want Henry, whose obviously not nearly as good as he once was, and injury prone, at the cap number he currently has.

It's pretty much as simple as that. At a lesser cap figure, great, keep him. What it is right now, too much.

amen to that. Brown proved he is not ready to play in this league.

The only fear I have personally about having two aging guys like this plus newman, is that none of them will play special teams and I think you need some dbs and safeties playing special teams.

Why on earth do you guys want to sign Springs? Dude is 33, we already have an old CB we're trying to get rid of, and you want to get an older one?

The same ones who are hell-bent against signing Ray Lewis b/c he's too old are supporting signing Springs' old, broke-down arse?! When has he EVER played a full season? I'd take my chances w/ 42; at least he's played two full seasons out of the last three and is younger! If Shawn's coming in for the vet min then I'd consider him but anything other than that would have be based on playing time & incentive laden w/ little threat of taking a big cap hit...

Now this is one guy Jerry should look to sign before New England does. Springs is a vet. he is solid and when healthy can still play. He has also played safety, simliar to A. Henry last year.

Well Dallas is going to need to sign another CB anyway. I can see us drafting one, but I think it would be smart to sign a vet. also. And me personally is against the Ray Lewis signing because of the money he reportly was asking for. I like Ray, but the salry he wanted was in IMO too much for his age. The same goes for Springs, I would like his signing if it can be done within reason.

eh? Springs = henry? Good story. When both are healthy springs >>> henry.
