No depth in our farm system?

It'd be very hard, no doubt. Still some concerns though, as far as all 4 of them staying relatively healthy throughout the year, and as far as our offensive production is concerned. This is basically a one, POSSIBLY two year rotation at the most, so if there is a major injury to one of these guys it could be a huge disaster.

Middle relief is going to be the key for this team. It was not great last year. Starting pitching is scary but they don't hit as well as other teams. Phillies need to have strong middle relief or they are going to lose some games late.

Offense that's hot at the right time, an ACE(or two) with an overall good/great pitching staff. Basically the SF giants.

Phillies offense will struggle big time if left as is, they will prob have to trade Blanton and/or Hamels for some bats.

Hamels isn't going anywhere and if we do trade Blanton it will be for salary relief. No one is going to give up anything for a guy who is coming off his worst season in the majors and was one of the worst starting pitchers in the league last year statistically.

The Phillies offense has alot of good bats. We simply had alot of guys underperform last season. If most of them rebound and produce in line with what they have averaged in their careers, our offense will be just fine. We need to hit at the top of the order though. Polanco is consistent every year, but Victorino needs to hit more this season, and Rollins needs to be moved to the 6 or 7 spot like he was at the end of last year. That's where his value is to this team, and he needs to hit alot better this year. He was fighting the injury bug alot last year so hopefully he can bounce back. Utley and Howard both struggled in their own right last year as well. Alot of room for improvement, but i have no doubt our offense will get better after down years for all of those guys last season.

I was trying to figure out how my comment went over your head.

The facts are, if he keeps giving ridiculous contract extensions to declining players, and keeps giving up 1st round picks to sign guys that he traded more prospects to acquire in the 1st place (and then traded away for a package much poorer than what he gave up) then in 3 years, when he gets fired, whoever takes over the job will have an unenviable task ahead of him.

And by the way, the Phillies farm system right now, is middle of the pack.

Sad to see Lee leave the Rangers but I'm THRILLED that he didn't join the Yankees either. That was awesome news.

We have plenty of good talent left. As far as signing declining players, i don't think Howard or Utley is on the decline yet. Almost every player on our team had an off year hitting last season, i think they'll definately pick it up on offense again this season.

As for giving away first round picks to sign Lee, we also got picks back from Werth going to another team, and with it being a deep draft we should be able to find good talent in the second round.

I don't think Amaro is doing a terrible job. He's clearly making moves to win, while we still are holding on to good talent. We arn't close to being depleted in the farm, and honestly he doesn't have too much more room to make any big moves for a few years now so im not too worried about raiding the minors for more prospects.

All we really need at this point is a right handed bat, maybe two to add to the lineup. Minor moves.

At least he didn't give Werth 7 for 126.

Yea, i'll admit we gave up alot of talent that i was sad to see go. Almost too much if you ask me, but you gotta give up good prospects to get great players. At least we arn't handing out ridiculous contracts like that to players who arn't even in the top teir at their position. Every GM in the league cringed at that signing, i guarentee you haha. Ridiculous.

Well, the Howard extension was universally panned just like the Werth contract. I was just saying, at least he didn't compound that by piling the Werth contract on top.

Jayson Werth just signed a 7 year, 126 million contact.

His best years were the last two.. and before that, he didn't do much.

2009: .268 36 HR 99 RBI

2010: .296 27 HR 85 RBI

Howard signed for virtually the same amount of money. 125 million.

His best years weren't even the last two years, but the last two are head and shoulders above Werth's best years as far as production.

He had a down year last season and still produced more runs than Werth.

2010: .276 31 HR 108 RBI

The 4 years before that he's averaged about 50 HR's and about 143 RBI.

THAT'S INSANE.

Werth doesn't come close in production. Howard also walks about 2 times as much as Werth and the past two years their strikeout numbers are very similar as well.

I think we made the right choice. I don't think that extension was something that Howard hasn't earned. He's been the best in the NL if not the MLB at his position, with the exception of only Pujols in my mind.
