Big winners: Angels and Red Sox!

You had 3 great pitchers already, you lost to the giants in 6 and you figure "Oh, we just need another big time pitcher!" the guy that choked against SF in the WS :laugh2::laugh2::laugh2::laugh2::laugh2:

Basically even if you had Lee last year it wouldn't make a difference.

I don't see how the Angels are big winners. They lost Crawford.

I'd say the Red Sox gained but I'd say the Angels and Rangers lost and the Yankees stayed the same. At least to this point.

Yeah i'd love to know what he is thinking.

He had it made in Texas.

He even said he was peeved by the trade from Philly when he arrived in Texas.

I read this morning where he said he thought he was going to be a Philly for the rest of his career, then they threw him a curve and traded him to Seattle. I guess that tells you he must have liked philly, but I would think it told him that he can;t count on Philly like he thought.

His point was that point was that the Angles were winners because their division rival Texas did not get the ace pitcher, and the Yankees lost because not only did they not get Lee, their division rival Red Sox got Crawford.

Sometimes the wins and losses aren't just who you pick up or not, it's who your division rivals pick up or not.

I guess. At the end of the day, you still gotta play the games. I would like to see the Yankees pick up another pitcher, another middle reliever and another bat but they are still going to be in a position to compete.

I definitely posted in one of these threads after the news broke. Could have sworn it was a standalone "Lee to Phillies" thread. Oh well.

I certainly expect the Yankees to compete, and the Rangers should compete even without Lee. Lee would have been a nice lift for either though.

Yeah but the Sox lost Beltre and Martinez, who've they basically replaced with Crawford and Gonzeles.

They will be better because they will probably be a whole lot healthier, but I wouldn't say they made a significant improvement on paper.

Yeah, but if he's not here, he's not here. No sense crying over it if your a Yankee fan or a Ranger fan.

didn't see the Phillies thing coming. This gives them a great pitching staff, but i would hav thought the fact the Phillies already exiled Lee to Seattle once would have caused Lee to view them in a less than favorable manner.

Lee cares about the team, not the front office. Its common knowledge that he loved his time in Philly. It was one of the best experiences of his life. Even after he was traded he always spoke fondly of the guys there and said it was "a true team". He talked about how so many guys there always liked stepping up in big pressure situations and how much he respected that. He kept in touch with alot of them throughout the season last year. He simply loved playing for our team.

Also, the fans didn't throw beer all over his wife and hurl insults at her throughout here time here, can't imagine that helped the Yankees case.

He took less money and years to come to a team and a place where he actually wanted to be, gotta respect that with the way players usually are nowadays.

To support the rest of you, you are correct. There WAS a "Lee to Phillies" thread last night/early this morning that seems to have been deleted.

Obviously someone is very unhappy right now. :laugh2:

I do respect that, and I also understand that he came for the team and teammates, and not for the front office, but the reality is the front office decides who will stay or go, and if they made Lee feel he would be a Philly for the remainder of his career and then sent him packing to Seattle, then what's to keep them from doing it again - especially if they don't have the obstacle of having to deal him with the kind of contract the Yankees or Rangers would have given him? Seems to me that would have played into his thinking, but I guess he just accepted that as a business decision.

I think he certainly understands it was nothing more than a business decisions and doesn't hold any hard feelings against the organization. Again, its more about coming back to play for the team and being in a place that he feels comfortable at. Im sure the fact that we ponied up that kind of contract played into it somewhat, when we went into the offseason committed to not increasing payroll too much, yet made an exception for him. That most likely showed how much we really did value him. Either way he's happy to be back and it'll be a crazy season for sure.

Another part of the deal that im sure made him realize how valuable he was to us, the Phillies have worked under a policy of not giving out contracts over 3 years to veteran pitchers, and yet we gave Lee 5 plus an option for a 6th. Certainly shows that we made every exception possible and did whatever was needed to secure him. The front office and owners seemed to realize they made a mistake trading him and knows his value to this organization and what he means to the rest of the team and the fans as well. He was beloved in the Philadelphia area before he left and there's already been a tidal wave of excitement over his return.

Halliday and Lee in the same rotation isn't fair. The rest of the staff was tough enough.
