Losing Austin might not be a bad thing

First off, I like Miles Austin. I like his attitude. I like his potential to be a legitimate third or second receiver. I would hate to lose him for those reasons, for what he might become.

However, I think Jerry Jones, and some other people, might be overly enamored with his potential, what he might become, to the point of overlooking the possibility of him failing or just being what he has been. Of the No. 2 role and all the attention from defenses and better corners that comes with it being too big for him. Of his flaws being exposed in a bigger role. (Again, I point to Billy Davis and Dallas' attempt to turn his potential into production and failing miserably, but fortunately at least having the foresight to add a washed-up former productive starter to the roster who helped take up the slack.)

If the Jets sign Austin to a contract Dallas is unwilling to match, it likely would force Dallas to stop counting on potential and address a position that could easily prove to be inadequate this season (as it was last season when teams figured out how to take away Owens). I think it is highly doubtful that Dallas would count on just a rookie to be ready to step into the No. 2 role, which would force the Cowboys to bring in someone who has proven he can get it done in the league.

That's all I want, whether Austin is on the team or not, but I don't think I'll get it unless Austin is gone. If he's here, I'll be hoping that he comes through on the faith many have in him (and hoping the Cowboys wisely prepare themselves for him not coming through). If he's not here, I'll be looking forward to Dallas bringing in someone who has already shown what he can do as a starter. Plus, the extra second-round pick doesn't hurt.

But who would that be?

Tory Holt? Who else?

But I agree with your opinion.

;)

Also, hopefully the coaches know something we don't?

Like others have said, I really hate to lose a player that the Cowboys have developed to their system, taught them how to be a NFL player, and then lose him!

That sucks!

I hate free agency!

losing austin would be a bad thing unless we bring a solid vet like you said but I really think austin is going to be a great player for us for a few years

Holt would possibly be my top choice if he checked out physically. I'd rather have him here competing for a starting job with Austin, but just having him here would be nice.

I mean, he did have 64 catches last season for a Rams team whose offense was in disarray.

They say it takes WRs a few years to adjust to the NFL, now after a few years people want to give up on the guy. I dont get it.

If we match, I hope Austin will be a great player for us in a few years. If we don't, I hope he proves to be no more than what he's shown.

I don't want us to lose Miles. In fact, I'll be very upset if we don't match the Jets' offer sheet (assuming they sign him to one).

But what if the Jets sign him to an offer sheet, we don't match, Miles flames out in New York and we find a stud with the 52nd overall pick?

Ahh, the mysteries of life. :)

I never said I want to give up on the guy. I only said I want to prepare for if a bigger role proves too big for him.

I would rather lose him than not be prepared for his failure. Unrealized potential is the downfall of many would-be NFL stars.

That's the thing ... we don't know. And I really hate uncertainties.

One of the things I liked about Bill Parcells is that he said he was always thinking about contingency plans. What is this player gets hurt? Or what if this player turns out to be not as good as we thought?

I haven't seen any indication that Dallas is considering a contingency plan for if Austin flames out ... although I have to admit that the Cowboys might have one that just hasn't come to fruition yet.

I would agree with that, hopefully they can do both. Keep him and still look for additional WRs. Hurd, Steinback etc.. are all scrubs.

I would love to give up Austin to the Jets (I've never been sold on him as anything more than a KR and #3 or #4 WR) and take the draft pick:
Use our #2s to get Robiskie and Delmas/Rashad Johnson
sign Torry Holt and we're seriously upgraded IMO.

he wasnt used much after we got roy #11 , he was used sparingly; before that he was having a pretty good season

I think that regardless of the New York situation, Dallas is going to take a WR within the 1st 3 picks, Austin wouldn't be set as the #2 WR if we match the Jet's offer sheet anyways, unless we jump the gun and sign him to an exhorbitant contract extension, which I don't envision happening

I would be happy with Austin, Holt and Delmas, but if the only way to get someone like Holt in the picture is to lose Austin, then what you propose sounds good to me.

The problem is, can we count on a rookie wide receiver to be true competition for the No. 2 job? It would give us more competition, but we really wouldn't be in a much different boat than we are with Austin ... gambling our success at the position on a player with potential who might not pan out.

I want to develop a young wide receiver one way of the other. I want to give that WR a chance to win a starting job. But I also want to have someone who has shown he can handle a starting job on hand in case that plan fails.

Give me a vet and a young guy with potential and let them fight it out. If the vet wins, then we know we need to keep looking for the next starter. If the young guy wins, then we can excise the vet at some point.

the only problem with the vet route is I don't think Jerry and the coaches want to go there

I know. That's why I'm saying losing Austin might not be a bad thing. I believe it will force Jerry and the coaches to go there.

Then we can draft a young receiver to essentially take Austin's role as the up-and-comer.

I say goodbye Austin especially if it is an outrageous offer. Get the 2nd rounder and maybe use both 2nd rounders as trade bait to move up.
