If Jerry goes the Holt route he looks incredibly dumb for making the youth movement excuse for releasing TO.

I think he can play, too. I just don't know at what level and am uncomfortable finding out without a solid backup plan.

If Austin goes, then the youth movement excuse is out the window.

If he doesn't, then Jerry would be smart to get someone like Holt, even if it makes him look dumb for making that statement.

Holt would possibly be my top choice if he checked out physically. I'd rather have him here competing for a starting job with Austin, but just having him here would be nice.

I mean, he did have 64 catches last season for a Rams team whose offense was in disarray.

I like Austin, a lot, but if he goes to the Jets and we get a 2nd for him I wouldn't be hurt, at all, if they replaced him with Holt and draft a WR for the future of the #2 spot.

Austin has potential, and I hope he turns out great, but so far he has only proven that he can show a flash of greatness here and there and that he can consistenly remain injuried.

My greatest fear would be Dallas still standing pat without Austin and just trying to get a No. 2 receiver in the draft. For a team that believes it is playoff-worthy, that would really be a senseless move.

I can't really see Dallas doing that without Austin, but I can see it standing pat with Austin ... and just drafting someone at some point to compete.

people piss on jerry for signing players who are over the hill and then beg him to ditch a young guy so the team can sign a guy just about to go over the hill.

You're right, it might not be a bad thing.

I really like Miles and have said so many times, but I like him more as an undrafted guy who works hard and makes good more than as some potential star player. He seems a little straight-line to me, and we don't know how he'll do when he has to run a full route tree all game long, or if you can count on his hands when it's 4th and six at the end of a game.

Bottom line, I personally think he's more a complementary receiver. Nothing wrong with that, but I have a hard time believing he's better than all but 51 players in this draft.

I believe in having young talent and developing young talent, but only playing young talent when it shows it can beat out a proven vet. No gimmes.

Right now, Miles Austin's greatest competition for the No. 2 role is a proven No. 3 receiver and two unproven receivers. If we draft a receiver, we add a third unproven receiver.

I'm not for ditching young guys, but they've got to win the job. If we're not going to make Austin do that, then I'd rather bring in a vet for the No. 2 role and force one of the unproven receivers to win the job from that vet.

A guy who had a Pro Bowl 1,100 yard season two years ago. And despite his pathetic supporting cast last year, still had 64 catches for 796 yards which is far better than anything Crayton has ever gave us. Especially when you take away the Rams game in 07 which greatly inflated his season. Holt only had two games last year where he had fewer than 3 receptions which is far more consistent than anything Crayton has given us the last two years. He'd automatically be our best possession receiver and route runner.

I don't want to go the vet route again. We have young guys. Get them on the field. Bring in Holt isn't going to make or break our season. If it would, TO would still be here.

I would have to disagree!! I wouldn't compare the T.O. situation to possibly signing Holt. We let him go because of the headaches he caused. Holt is a good character/locker room guy. We didn't let Owens go because he's just a veteran and was taking time/plays away from our young guys with potential!! If T.O. never caused any off the field issues or whatever he'd still be on the team. It has nothing to do with veteran vs. young players like you say it is!! If Jerry & Co. think Austin is our #2 then he'll be if not maybe Holt or a rookie.

There are so many ways to go with this if the team ends up with the 52nd pick in the second round.

Marry the 51st and 52nd and it is enough points to get you to 22 in the first.

Possibly Heyward-Bey or Percy harvin.

The 1.5 you saved on Austin could then be offered Holt. So you have a receiver that can play immediately and still have a guy projected to be a real player in the near future.

I actually like this idea, because it brings in another vet that can teach the younger guys and still drafts a guy like Heyward-bey who is Austin's size and much much faster.

Or you could use one of the two seconds on a receiver that drops.

Losing a guy that produced one stellar game and then a bunch of two catch games and some with no catches at all isn't a deal breaker for me.

I have no problem with getting the young guys on the field. What scares me is what happens if those young guys show they don't belong on the field.

If we have no threat opposite Williams, then yes, it could make or break our season as far as making it to the Super Bowl. I think we've got enough talent to beat most teams without a good No. 2, but when we go against the better defenses in the league, we're going to need at least an Alvin Harper-type threat at that position.

Good thread. I would rather fail however with young up and coming homegrown talent as opposed to not taking that chance and failing with quick fix veterans.

My viewpoint is that it doesn't really have to be either/or. Dallas seems to be making it either/or with Austin, so if it takes losing him to jolt the Cowboys out of that mind-set, I could live with that. I don't want to lose Austin, but I do want Dallas to see that it needs to prepare for possible failure by unproven players.

If I get that and a second-round pick, I'm OK with it.

They say it takes WRs a few years to adjust to the NFL, now after a few years people want to give up on the guy. I dont get it.

It's not giving up on him to let him leave for pick 52.

Giving up on him is cutting him as we 'may' do with say Isaiah Stanbeck.

Again, this is win-win. If you take a WR in r7 and 3 years later move him for a r2 you have won, period.

You cannot be serious.
Miles Austin is a young player who will get better EVERY YEAR that he is given significant time.

Holt, at best, would be a stop-gap. An over-the-hill guy who would not add anything that Austin/Hurd/Crayton could not. And I don't want a second rounder who might make the team or might be just as good as Austin. Not worth the gamble.

Please, girls, let's get over this coveting of "Big Names." These "big names" are usually let go for a good reason, loss of skills or too expensive. We don't want either.
