Miles Austin is a young player who will get better EVERY YEAR that he is given significant time.

Holt, at best, would be a stop-gap. An over-the-hill guy who would not add anything that Austin/Hurd/Crayton could not. And I don't want a second rounder who might make the team or might be just as good as Austin. Not worth the gamble.

Please, let's get over this coveting of "Big Names." These "big names" are usually let go for a good reason, loss of skills or too expensive. We don't want either.

The fact you think you can guarantee that just shows how deluded you are.

Austin has been here 3 years and looks to have finally gotten some basic WR skill set down. But is this guy someone we can trust to run a good route on 3rd and 5? Can he catch the ball consistently?

The answer is we do not know because he is hardly a natural at any aspect of being a WR other than his measurements.

There are a dozen free agent WRs out there with far more proven track records and some of them with similar measurements.

I would not necessarily target Holt but I can see why he might fit. Holt knows the offense Garrett played in and learned for 10 years. He has #1 experience but is at a point in his career where he just wants another ring after years of being on awful teams.

You could look to a number of WRs like Drew Bennett or Reggie Williams who have upside remaining and yet still have far more proven WR skills than Austin.

It is hilarious to me that so many people applauded losing T.O. and his hall of fame numbers for nothing in return yet now are bemoaning losing Austin when you get 52 back? WOW!

If losing Austin would merit us the #52 pick in the 2nd round,

And if we can take our #51 and package it with our 2nd 4th rounder to allow us to move up high enough to grab WR Hakeem Nicks,

And if we could then take the Jets' #52 and (possibly) package it with a 5th rounder to move and grab OG Duke Robinson,

And if we could use our 3rd rounder on an good ILB,

And if we could use our 4th rounder (1st in the 4th round) to grab Michael Hamlin

And if we would then sign Torry Holt to replace the departed Austin, THEN

I am all for letting Austin go!

Oh please post anything that suggests this is nothing more than an opinion.

Just one thing would do.

You can say it, but that doesn't make it true. And what if you are wrong? What if he can't get separation, or is injured again?

Where is the frickin' Plan B?

Or did we learn nothing from last year and Brad Johnson? That not having an alternate plan will sometimes bite you on the butt.

I think I might be looking to move up and get Britt if he were to fall far enough. Especially if you can get infront of the Giants who will take him. He would be the perfect replacement for Plax.

What is this LOVE for this man!!!!!!! I dont get it around here. Every man we have on the roster i hear is the greatest or has the most potential and yet a playoff win still eludes us let alone a playoff appearance. This guy is average at best so if the jets want him...lets all give him a round of applause and accept the 2nd round pick with great appreciation. Some of you guys around here think we have the next coming of Jerry rice for goodness sake. Have we gotten that desperate!!!

I honestly don't care about "big names." I care about proven ability.

Right now, we hope Miles Austin "will get better EVERY YEAR that he is given significant time," but we do not know that. ... All I want is some insurance in case it does not happen. Someone who has proven that he can play a No. 2 receiver role in the NFL.

Improve the competition with someone who has the know-how to be a No. 2 and I'm fine with someone like Austin winning the job. I'm not fine with the job just being inherited by him without any kind of reasonable fallback, which seems to be the direction Jones is leaning if we retain Austin.

Of course, I could be wrong about that and Jones has just been waiting until Austin signs to add a proven vet, or waiting until after the draft. Whatever the case, Dallas needs a vet so that it is not held hostage by the No.2 receiver spot.

That's a very good example (except we did get Brooks Bollinger as an alternate). The coaches certainly felt Johnson was a capable backup and sold Jones on the idea that he could get the job done, but he proved unable to step up when the time came.

I think this shows (if people didn't already know it from the many other examples we've seen) that the front office/coaches can be dead wrong in their evaluation of a player and need to take precautions for that possibility.

First off, I like Miles Austin. I like his attitude. I like his potential to be a legitimate third or second receiver. I would hate to lose him for those reasons, for what he might become.

However, I think Jerry Jones, and some other people, might be overly enamored with his potential, what he might become, to the point of overlooking the possibility of him failing or just being what he has been. Of the No. 2 role and all the attention from defenses and better corners that comes with it being too big for him. Of his flaws being exposed in a bigger role. (Again, I point to Billy Davis and Dallas' attempt to turn his potential into production and failing miserably, but fortunately at least having the foresight to add a washed-up former productive starter to the roster who helped take up the slack.)

If the Jets sign Austin to a contract Dallas is unwilling to match, it likely would force Dallas to stop counting on potential and address a position that could easily prove to be inadequate this season (as it was last season when teams figured out how to take away Owens). I think it is highly doubtful that Dallas would count on just a rookie to be ready to step into the No. 2 role, which would force the Cowboys to bring in someone who has proven he can get it done in the league.

That's all I want, whether Austin is on the team or not, but I don't think I'll get it unless Austin is gone. If he's here, I'll be hoping that he comes through on the faith many have in him (and hoping the Cowboys wisely prepare themselves for him not coming through). If he's not here, I'll be looking forward to Dallas bringing in someone who has already shown what he can do as a starter. Plus, the extra second-round pick doesn't hurt.

I completely agree. I think not only Jones, but a lot of fans are placing Austin up on some pedestal thinking he's more than what he is. He's 3 years in and only has 18 catches on his resume. 13 coming last year.

I'm pretty confident we can find a rookie between rounds 2-3 that could exceed or match the productivity he's given us so far.

If we lost him I'd happily take the 2nd rounder and consider myself a winner in that deal.

Other than the fact that he has improved every year he has been on the roster, I'd say there isn't much support for it.
