Love it or hate it, this is how I see the draft going

They seem to be quite interested in Petty. The OP's premise may be correct in terms of late 2nd round if they indeed want him badly enough. I'd prefer the 3rd, though the Boys could feel he won't be available at their pick. Most seem to feel Petty will need time to develop...that he won't be able to start immediately. So QB needy teams might not want him too early. But the Boys are still near the end of the 3rd, bordering the 4th. As we've seen, QB's are often over-drafted simply based on the position. Some have mentioned the back injury might concern some teams as well.

Following a similar scenario to the OP's...but with different picks acquired in the trade:

2nd: RB Tevin Coleman...or CB/S Byron Jones, Eric Rowe (earlier 2 f/trade)
2nd: QB Bryce Petty
3rd: CB/S Josh Shaw...or RB Yeldon, Davis, Allen (best available)
4th: DE Frank Clark (earlier 4 f/trade)
4th: WR/KR/ST Kenny Bell
5th: OT Laurence Gibson
6th: DT Tyeler Davison (f/trade ... well built/fairly athletic 1-tech, 8.5 sacks in 2014, former wrestler)
7th: CB Justin Coleman (started 20+ games outside & has also played inside...physical tackler)
7th: Gabe Martin (official visit; 115 tackles, 18 TFL, 2 Int., 6 PD, 2.5 sacks in 2014)
*Undrafted free agents: CB Tray Walker (Texas Southern; official visit)

As mentioned, the potential problem the Boys have is how late they pick in each round. Several people to include Mayock, have Petty as their #3 QB.

A mock that includes Petty in the same spot minus a trade down:

1st: RB Gurley or Gordon (would consider a minimal trade up for Gurley if able with a 2016 mid-round pick)
2nd: QB Bryce Petty
3rd: CB/S Josh Shaw
4th: DE Frank Clark
5th: OT Laurence Gibson
7th: DT Tyeler Davison
7th: CB Justin Coleman
*Undrafted free agents: LB Gabe Martin, CB Tray Walker

2-Tevin Coleman
2-Bryce Petty
3-Josh Shaw
3-Frank Clark
4-Jacori Shepard or Kevin White
5-Ty Montgomery

Notes:

-I think they trade out. Alot of first round WRs and I believe someone wants to move back into the first to get one. With our targets likley gone ( I even think Owa will be gone) we work the phones. I think we pick up a 3rd moving to about 40-45.

-They seem very interested in Petty. VERY interested. Get yourself ready for that.

-Alot of talk of Clark shooting up boards. Many think he is a top 100 pick now.

-4th could be a WR (Conley) but I think they go with another CB there.

love everything except the top 2 picks which means i m luke warm on it overall

Goldman
Kendricks
Peat
Flowers
Brown
Odighizuwa

will be gone and if one of those are there then they will pick.

Petty has been rising up boards and most places consider him a late 2nd, early 3rd

Petty wont be ready for 2 years(if he ever figures out the pro game),by that time he will be 26-27.there is no upside to drafting him in the first 3 RDs.I would rather keep Weeden because believe it or not he is more accurate that Petty.

Which boards? Not NFLdraftscout where they have him at 117 overall. NFL teams only lie at this time of year about interest in prospects.

The guy is going to take one or two years just to learn how to play from under center. I don't buy a team spending a top 60 pick on him.

Don't know if it's true but on Sirius NFL Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller were talking to a scout and they said 75% of the snaps last year were taken from the shotgun and that QBS coming from spread offenses were not that big of deal anymore.

maybe but the Baylor offense is an extreme gimmick case,if the first read is not open then look out because those QBs cant make it through progressions and you can see it in RG3 who is still struggling with it.

Gotcha. I was surprised when they said 75%. Petty does seem to be rising, I see he is visiting the Jets today.

This Petty in the 2nd round stuff is a bit much.

Not that rankings aren't just opinions too, but Petty is now ranked 117th on CBS and NFL Draft Scout.

It'd be really disappointing on many levels if we burned the 60th pick on him when have so many needs that can be addressed there with better players to boot.

Somebody always falls. Teams are said to be cooling on Goldman FWIW based on workouts etc.

Even Goldman at 27?
Hmmm

Considering they haven't had him in for a visit and he hasn't worked out you are probably right. I get why he is dropping but I do think he is a very good player. FSU played him at 327 at DE and he mauled tackles. He is just so strong and when he rips their hands lose grip. He reminds me of Jernigan last year.

Historically, I think he is better than Sylvester Morris, Michael Brockers, and Jernigan. I'm not interested in this years Poe Invitational prospects. Neither Brown or Armstead is the athletic specimen Dontari was and are barely better prepared. We haven't visited with those guys either or the OT.

I don't want the corner after Johnson or the back after Gordon when there is a lot of better talent out there at positions that can help us too.

Petty at 60 would be very disappointing. With the restructure we are tied to Romo for 3 more seasons. So we are using pick 60 on a backup QB?

Cmon, QB's get drafted way ahead of where they should ALL the time. RGIII is a prime example, but then add recent stiffs like Ej Manuel, Geno Smith, Brandon Weeden, Christian Ponder, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert, Tim Tebow.....do I need to go on?

Maybe you know more than the scouts at his pro day and workouts. I read several quotes that stated his big improvement in taking snaps from under the center, his arm that can make all the throws and his ability to quickly learn and recognize coverages. Maybe, just maybe, Petty is rising due to these traits . It was not known if Petty could do any of these things, but he has shown the ability to convince scouts that he can. I would guess that little things like this would cause a player to rise up draft boards. You may not buy it, but it sure looks like some scouts do. I would guess that their opinion carries a little more weight for a team that is drafting a QB.
