Just because Emmitt laid it on the line whenever he stepped on the field doesn't mean he wasn't a me first type of guy.
Remember when he was a rookie and drove by an auto accident scene, and called it in on his phone instead of stopping to help? He caught a bunch of flak for that at the time.
But whatever kind of guy Emmitt was, he was undoubtedly the kind of guy you wanted on your side.
When he pulled off the performance against the giants with the separated shoulder, how do we know he was doing it "for the team"? Maybe that was nothing more than a grand tribute to his own ego? I saw a lot of self aggrandizement when he was pulling of his helmet after scoring touchdowns in front of millions of spectators in the Super Bowl.
But whatever his motives were, his actions didn't (at least to me) make him an unlikable guy.
Ego can be harnessed for good.
