Maybe I am imagining things, but the guy never was the same player after he almost shattered his neck against the Bears that one year, trying to leap over the pile...

He wasn't. He lost some explosiveness. I don't know how injuring your kneck can do that but it did.

Wasn't emmitt trying to get 20,000 rushing yards?

I think he mentioned that once, but even Emmitt could only go so far. That is a plateau that may never be reached.

Emmitt did clear 20000 combined yards though.

3 years ago I swore he was a lock.

Didn't know his body was going to wear down this fast.
Curtis Martin led the league in rushing the year before he fell off.

I will hold off any judgements or predicitions for a few yeaars. He probably has 2 to 3 years of some good productivity. Maybe not great like his first 5 years, but some decent years left. Then will take another look at it then.

IMO anyone that wants to chase after records just so their name is branded in the books, wouldn't be on my team.

guess you wouldn't have Emmitt then, who said - as a rookie - he wanted the record.... ;)

edit: well, I was the third or fourth person to say this, but the first to say it with a blinkie so...yay for me...

All it's gonna take is for the rules to start favoring the offense more and more and more then it already is down the road say 10 years.

Then the record will be in reach.

Just because Emmitt laid it on the line whenever he stepped on the field doesn't mean he wasn't a me first type of guy.

Remember when he was a rookie and drove by an auto accident scene, and called it in on his phone instead of stopping to help? He caught a bunch of flak for that at the time.

But whatever kind of guy Emmitt was, he was undoubtedly the kind of guy you wanted on your side.

When he pulled off the performance against the giants with the separated shoulder, how do we know he was doing it "for the team"? Maybe that was nothing more than a grand tribute to his own ego? I saw a lot of self aggrandizement when he was pulling of his helmet after scoring touchdowns in front of millions of spectators in the Super Bowl.

But whatever his motives were, his actions didn't (at least to me) make him an unlikable guy.

Ego can be harnessed for good.

Should be a hard task since todays NFL has resorted to a two back system. Only guy I think has a chance at this is AD.

Because TD's = losses

Who said that???

Ok guys, I see there are some LaDainain fans here and made a response to my post... I would have respected his comments a bit more if he would have mentioned winning a super bowl or two. As for Emmitt Smith saying that in his rookie year isn’t valid to me because, I’ve seen him sacrifice a lot for our team.

Emmitt played with a separated shoulder, LT won't even play with a broken finger nail. Good luck...

Emmitt was my boyhood idol. I loved how humble he was. He didn't celebrate TD's the way most players do, he just took his ball to the sidelines. He threw great blocks and caught passes and always showed a great deal of respect for his O-line. Class act.

Does anyone else believe that if Emmitt had stayed Parcells's first year, the team would have been better? Granted he wasn't Emmitt of old, but he was better than Hambrick. And who knows, Emmitt might have really been able to turn it on in the playoffs. Just throwing that out there.

Yes I do and I said so at the time. It was very foolish to let Emmitt go and rely solely on Hambrick. Hambrick had proven NOTHING and was merely a decent change of pace guy. His lack of character should have alerted Jerry and the coaching staff to his unreliability as a starter. Everyone was wide eyed over his gaudy average but that had been done on a few big carries and not over the course of being the starter for multiple games.

I firmly believe that Parcells wanted Emmitt gone so that he could remove anyone who was from the old regime. BP is big on bringing in HIS guys and not having holdovers from the last dynasty. I can see his point of wanting to change the culture but I still think it was a bad move, especially as Emmitt was willing to restructure his contract to make it more cap-friendly.

LT is fighting against nature and physics.

He's on the down cycle of his career. He's not going to get better. And to preserve him, he's going to have to share the load. And he's not going to get the record sharing carries with Darren Sproles.

Emmitt was a physical specimen. You're going to need someone who can take a pounding over number of years and get the carries to surpass Emmitt's record.

Parcells didn't even like Cowboys from the glory days to come around and help the young guys on the team. He wanted to erase Cowboys history and make it his own. That was a mistake in my opinion. Criticize Wade Phillips all you want, but at least he believes in family - as in past and present players together forever as it should be.

He probably gets it if he stayed with the Cowboys, or if Roy Williams didn't abruptly shorten one of his seasons.

Emmitt did it that was one of his goals when he first came into the league
