I wonder who he hit up as kicking guru in the off-season the ball is coming off his foot different than his first go around. I think his mechanics and setup were tweaked a little.

He was actually great last year, making most of his kicks in a relief role, but when the injured kicker came back, Maher had to be released because the guy was on a fat contract.

McCarthy should have let him kick it in OT last week. I felt better with him than I did with our offense.

Probably so, but it appeared that Green Bay could have just responded with a TD.

That would have been a weird pick in 2013 as Dan Bailey had established himself as a good kicker at the time.

Yes, in 2011. He was good his rookie season and even better in 2012, which is why it would have been weird for Dallas to draft Maher or any kicker in 2013. They didn't just in case that isn't clear. The last two kickers they drafted were David Buehler in the 5th round in 2009 and Nick Folk in the 6th round of 2007. Folk was good for Dallas for a couple of seasons until he got injured. He kind of lost his mechanics for several seasons after that. Took him a while to get his groove back.
