Mailbag: Could Schoonmaker challenge for TE1?

Based on hints this offseason and S heimers past history a reasonable person can assume this team is going to run a fair amount of 12 personnel. Maybe even their base offense up to 30% of the snaps. One of those TEs primary responsibility is going to be blocking. Considering they’re giving Ford snaps with the ones and that he doesn’t offer alot as a receiver a reasonable person could assume they would like him to take that position so they can cross train Schoon as the backup at both positions.

Regardless, I don’t think any reasonable person, barring injury could believe there’s any chance of Ferguson losing his spot!

There's actually a chance but sure he's the front runner to be a starter but I think it's wide open he played like garbage last year injury or not that's a fact lots of people didn't play well but you have to earn it this year you don't just get it this isn't high school this is a new staff everyone gets a clean slate that's all I'm saying sure I'll agree he's the front runner...

But that's it this is what training camps are for especially with a new staff everyone's going to be going at it to try to steal someone's job and this is a job that's open for such a shock as to somebody else might get the starting job..

I like you open competitions like I said I up there I believe tight end running back and Interior defensive tackle ie NT Are all pretty wide-open competitions right now somebody could really work hard and step up and just step over somebody so to speak......

should be fun to watch..

Patrik: I do believe there's potential for Schoonmaker to be a solid starter in the league for a team that utilizes his skill set in such a way as to maximize that fit, but it's also true that Jake Ferguson owns attributes better suited to what Brian Schottenheimer and the Cowboys are hoping to get from a TE1 — e.g., YAC ability. While Schoon is a better timed athlete than Fergy, he’s never demonstrated an ability to create YAC. I’m not joking when I tell you he had the most boring “highlight” videos of any prospect I can remember coming out of college.

That said, one of Dak’s strong suits is throwing the seam route which plays into Schoon’s good speed which doesn’t require him to breakdown like most routes require.

Tolbert has a limited skill set. He needs to show he can run more than just the vertical and comeback routes. Right now I'd have to believe that WR3 is a committee approach with a 2nd TE being a fairly heavy part of that equation.

His lack of lateral agility limits his route running. That's why he was a 3rd rounder.

Yeah, agree….might help more in the run game to. Thought the same with the Raiders….have Mayer and Bowers and not that good WRs….should run 2 TE every play lol.

Ferguson played through an MCL sprain early in the season and a concussion in the later part.
Considering they still felt he was a better option on a banged up knee and that he was mentioned as being one of the players along with Bland that they would be interested in resigning I have a hard time believing he’s in any actual danger of losing his spot!

No! I believe Schoonmaker will end up another bust/waste of a second round pick TE. (See Martellus Bennett, Anthony Fasano, Gavin Escobar picks). He’s half way there now.

I already gave you my opinion, I don't think it's set in stone, it makes sense that he'll probably end up with the job,

but that doesn't make it actual fact when it happens, we'll all talk about it in the meantime, I think it's wide open...​

I sometimes think fans underestimate that other players can step up and grow and actually progress how do we know that Ferguson we've already seen his best I don't care about the excuses about his injury I just want to make sure you understand that I don't believe he's just getting the job automatically.​

I do not believe this new staff is just going to hand it to him... I think they believe in competition and the best person is going to get the job .whether fans like it or not whether it's a fan favorite. and I know Ferguson's a fan favorite .nobody has respect for Schoonmaker, but you want to make sure you don't understand he could grow, he could all of a sudden take a step or Ford.

How I was reading somewhere that one of our undrafted free agents I believe is a tight end doing really good things in camp I don't remember his name but it was a short little Twitter X blurb so you could keep thinking that's who's getting the job like somehow by default and that might be so but I prefer to watch and see how this thing goes it is one of the positions I don't believe is set..

I'd say probably 44 of the 53 typical active players are probably set,

but at running back, tight end, and defensive tackle, the starting number one and the depth chart has not been set..

that's something that people can win this offseason.. I will definitely be paying closer attention in preseason to this no not the hype coming at a camp all over the NFL i'm tired of hearing about how good everybody looks yeah they all look good in shorts running against air everybody looks healthy and spry but once you're coming out of camp playing some preseason games that's where I want to see these groups develop these camp battles should be fun and the way they respond in the preseason game should be even more fun for fans this year..

I am not a big fan of Schoonmaker. He doesn't have an ounce of athleticism in his body. Straight line speed - sure. Blocking? Nope. When he has the ball in his hands he is Daryl Johnston reborn. No jukes, no spin moves, no stiff arm, no hurdles. Just run right to the nearest defender and go down. His 27 catches doesn't make him better that Escobar, Fasano or Swaim, IMO.

That's what I see. Just a decent backup type. For the life of me I can't see what people see in him.

The head coach and TE coach aren’t new. Outside of completely ******** the bed in camp (won’t happen) there’s not going to be any inclination to break up the repoire and timing he has with Dak!
Schoon’s strength he was drafted on is blocking, BFord isn’t a threat as a receiver.
There’s no one on the roster capable of straight beating Ferguson in a competition for the receiving TE!
