Why is David Irving not starting? All he does is make big plays, always seems to be around the ball and pressuring the quarterback.

Rob: I think it speaks to how well the defensive tackles, Terrell McClain and Maliek Collins, are playing, which has allowed Tyrone Crawford to move outside to defensive end. Irving was averaging about 22 defensive snaps before getting hurt in the fourth game, and he obviously had a big impact in his return to the lineup against the Packers. They’ve used him as an outside and inside rusher, and more impactful plays like that should mean more playing time in Rod Marinelli’s rotation. Remember, he might have been in line for one of the starting defensive end spots before hurting his groin in the middle of preseason.

David: As promising as he might be, Irving is still a really young player – and he’ll be the first to tell you how often he makes mistakes. I think the Cowboys like the idea of limiting his snaps to pass rush situations, so he doesn’t have to worry about as much. But, man. After the performance he turned in on Sunday, he should be in line for more snaps.

David Irving deserves to start over Maliek Collins, this is not even debatable anymore. It was barely debatable before.

What? Collins is playing excellent football right now.

How many sacks? Forced fumbles? Fumble recoveries? Blocked passes? Tackles for loss?

Irving has outplayed him in much fewer snaps.

If you can't stop the run, rushing the passer becomes useless. M Collins has done a wonderful job since he's started at tackle, better than T Crawford! IMO Find someone else besides Collins to pick on. One good game doesn't make you a star. Now can he become a star? If keeps working hard and stays disciplined, which is why he didn't get the starting job at DE in the first place.

Just heard from Clarence Hill that Irving only played 18 snaps!! 3 forced fumbles and a recovery, and a batted pass!! That's even more impressive now!

What they are saying is as long as his only responsibility is to pass rush he is ok. Otherwise he makes too many mistakes in his assignments, coupled with the fact that he has been injured. No point overloading him if he can't handle the load.

I think Irving is fine where he is in the rotation. We need as close to starter level talent on the second wave.

Did not see Collins stopping a gimpy Lacy yesterday. In fact, Irving was just as impressive against the run as he was rushing the QB. His ability to push the pocket with power then use his pterodactyl like reach to lasso anyone within his incredible wingspan allows him to cover almost 3 gaps. Not to mention his ability to find the ball whether it is a pass, run or a fumble is beyond what any other DL is doing right now.
