There was a comment under the picture stating that it was a photo from the Kobe earthquake from back in 1995, not today's one.

My japanese is so rusty, but i see

"Nihon no minasan no <something - is that pray?> rini"

nihon - japan, japanese

minasan = everyone

Not sure if the "nihon no" part is correct, but it looks like it translates to "Pray for everyone in japan" or "everyone in japan, pray" or something similar.

It means something like pray for all the Japanese.

My wife is Japanese. So far, all of he family is OK. There are so many aftershocks. She has a sister in Nagano where another quake supposedly just hit. She is OK. My wife's parents live near Mt Fuji. They only lost electricity.

I hope and pray they get that nuclear power plant to chill down.

I've experienced 4 earthquakes in Japan. Thankfully, none serious. There really ain't much you can do except hope you are not in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It was supposed to say 'Prayers to everyone in Japan', but I ended up saying something else :laugh2: Obviously, I am not a Japan native, but I tried.

I work on the 14 floor in my building. Try sitting through a 5.0+ earthquake and the building still swaying back and forth for about a minute AFTER the quake has stopped.

It's a real life "thinking" moment. We have about 3 a year here in Anchorage.

This one was at least 1000 times more powerful than that one.

Every Richtor scale whole number indicates a 30 fold increase in energy. San Fran at 6.9 is 30 times as powerful as a 5.9 which makes Japan's earthquake 30x30x30 over a 5.9. Yeah, you do the math and see why this is such a monster.

Of course depth and rock formations over the actual epicenter change things a bit.
