Anyone else have em?

I got em bad. I usually go to sleep WAY too late and never wake up when I want to.

Last night, went to bed at about 4:30 am. Didn't way up until 5:30 pm. I don't know what it is but there are times when I cannot sleep and when I finally do, I sleep forever.

Sucks, I don't think I have been on a regular sleep schedule in years. Part of it was work schedule but now I don't have a crappy schedule and still cannot sleep.

Anyone haver any suggestions? I've tried it all. Took the TV out of my bedroom so I can't watch it anymore while trying to sleep but even that hasn't done much.

Pretty much the only thing that will help me get to sleep when I want to is a couple of Tylenol PMs.

Im dying.

If you consume refined sugar, such as soft drinks and/or coffee, completely remove them from your diet. Thats a good starting point in self diagnosing your problem. Another item that might help is L Tryptophan.

If you are eating food 4 to 6 hours prior to your target bed time, that may be hindering your sleep. Reason: The body requires more energy to digest food than any other function. So your body may be so busy working to digest food that it cannot enter into a deep sleep state. You also need to get your body on a regular sleep/wake cycle. Force yourself to go to sleep at the same time every evening and set an alarm to wake at the same time. This will help reset you bodies internal clock.

Those are the things I think can solve your problem without medical help. You want to try these first before seeing a Dr. Your Dr. will only prescribe sleeping aids that, if taken over an extended period will create more problems for you.

Hoofbite -

I'm guessing that you've already done many google searches on the topic and read up on it.

As you look at it, is there anything that you can think of that is messing up your sleep schedule? ... or risk factors (smoking, snoring, etc.) that you think might be working againt you?

Setting regular sleep-wake hours is pretty important. Avoid napping during non-sleep hours. But you've probably read this before along with many other suggestions.

One thing that sometimes isn't mentioned -- When you are awake in bed and getting frustrated that you aren't sleeping ... try to keep yourself from getting frustrated. Resting in bed with your eyes shut isn't a bad thing ... that'll help you get through the day too. So think of something relaxing and pleasant instead of getting frustrated. And if you manage to stay relaxed while you're in the bed, instead of getting frustrated, there is at least a chance that you may fall asleep eventually.

I doubt this is an issue with you, but your question reminds me of something I read several years ago. It was an interview of a director of a sleep clinic. The director remarked that some people who report chronic insomnia and who have undergone sleep studies in sleep laboratories actually sleep just fine. Their problem is that when they are asleep, they dream that they are laying awake in bed! That's a pretty crazy story, which is why it stuck with me.

Do you even attempt at laying down?

Try not to think and close your eyes.

Some other things to try are wine, popcorn, milk, Advil/tylenol PM, Benadryl.

I've also heard Velerian Root works but i've never tried it. They sell it at Wal-Greens.

I get the problem on and off but thats how I usually combat it.

Stay awake one whole day then go to bed the following night a 9pm, then force yourself to get up by 7am. And as was already suggested, avoid refined sugar and caffeine.

I don't have the same troubles you do, but I do have trouble sleeping. I have severe insomnia and rarely sleep more than 4 or 5 hours in any given day. At times it gets so bad I will go 4 or 5 days without sleeping at all.

Someone mentioned physical exhaustion. Sometimes that helps. Sometimes it just makes it worse.

There is no perfect solution, but if it is truly giving you problems you might want to talk to a doctor. That has never helped me because they just want to prescribe something to help me sleep. But it does help others.

I had sleeping problems for years.

Tried lots of stuff...Ambien, Lunesta, over the counter stuff, herbal stuff...it all worked well but left me kinda fuzzy around the edges the next day.

Three months ago, I adopted a dog from a local shelter...I haven't had any problems sleeping since then. No drugs. No nuthin'. No lie. :)

Stop eating.

Being more specific, fast for 16 hours before the time you'd like to wake up.

So if you want to wake up at 6am tomorrow, you couldn't eat anymore food today as it's already past 2pm. The lack of food will lower your blood sugar making it easier to fall asleep tonight. When you do wake up, eat nutritious foods. Doesn't have to be healthy, just nutritious. Whenever you manage to eat will be the time your body resets to.

Fasting always makes me sleep less but it can work at first if never tried prior..
