So you wake up every day and can't move for a few moments?

No, it happens right when I fall asleep. Body goes paralysed before my brain goes into dreamland. I panic and wake my self up. I heard if you just ignore it you'll go into normal sleep...But theres no way i'm just gonna lay there paralysed while I wait for deep sleep to come. :(

That's very selfish of you. What if your bf wants to cuddle? ;)

...variables that can affect your sleep cycle negatively.

Age diet, lifestyles habits, stress, environment, etc. Too numerous to mention and some that haven't even been discovered.

It can be as individual as the person.

If you have a local sleep clinic attached to your local hospital see if your can get a referral to become a patient in their ward. Their protocol is to study and identify the issues that may be impeding your sleep.

If you don't have this resource the next best thing is to begin a lifestyle and personal diary for at least 3-6 months.

Notate everything to develop a detailed road map of what your life is day to day minute by minute. Include everything from lifestyle choices to thoughts and stressors. Include your thoughts and reactions to events and stressors.

After completion of your diary begin knocking off all the potential culprits of your life that may negatively affect your sleep. You may find a lot of lifestyle habits that fit this category.

This may take time because it sounds like a problem you have been carrying for a while.

I have severe sleep apnea, so my problem is not that I don't get enough sleep, it's getting quality sleep. If I don't force myself to get up, I can sleep 15 hours or more, easy, and have done so many times. The problem is, I rarely reach REM without the help of a bipap machine. It sucks trying to sleep with one of those. Also, I play hockey on friday nights, and sometimes our games don't start until midnight, so by the time the game is over, I get showered, go home, and wind down, it's 3-4am before I get to bed. That throws my whole schedule off for the weekend.

Hopefully having my tonsils removed will help some, but the prospect of being off of work for up to 6 weeks doesn't sit well with me.

See a doctor and ask him about getting a prescription for Rozerem. It's works differently than Ambien and Lunesta, so you there's no risk of hallucinating or waking up and sleep walking/eating/driving. It just resets your biological clock and, in my experience, it works like a charm.

Wow, a 6 week leave for having your tonsils removed. I am glad I am keeping mine. My doctor said he did not think removing my tonsils and scraping my soft pallet would help me with my sleep apnea.

I took a sleep study last week and go in for my follow up sleep study tonight to get fitted for my CPAP machine. I figure it is going to be a hassle learning to sleep with one of those things, but it should be better than possibly dying in the middle of the night(worst case) and not getting the quality sleep I need.

Well, my "ENT" said I could miss up to six weeks of work (my tonsils are very swollen). She did say it may, or may not help with my apnea.

Are they giving you a cpap, or bipap? It will be a hassle trying to get used to sleeping with a mask (I kept taking my mask off in my sleep), but once you do, you will feel like a new person.

One thing that sometimes isn't mentioned -- When you are awake in bed and getting frustrated that you aren't sleeping ... try to keep yourself from getting frustrated.

I am not positive which one. I will find out more tonight during my sleep study.

I work nights and get done around 2am. I go home, eat and watch TV. I cannot go right to sleep. It's usually around 5:30-6am that I start feeling tired and I wake up around 2pm every day. I always set my alarm clock to 10:30 am, but every time it goes off, I just turn it off and go right back to sleep. I just hate waking up so late.

But man you have it pretty bad, 5:30pm? That is the latest I've ever woken up and it was only the one time.

Anyone else have em?

I got em bad. I usually go to sleep WAY too late and never wake up when I want to.

Last night, went to bed at about 4:30 am. Didn't way up until 5:30 pm. I don't know what it is but there are times when I cannot sleep and when I finally do, I sleep forever.

Sucks, I don't think I have been on a regular sleep schedule in years. Part of it was work schedule but now I don't have a crappy schedule and still cannot sleep.

Anyone haver any suggestions? I've tried it all. Took the TV out of my bedroom so I can't watch it anymore while trying to sleep but even that hasn't done much.

Pretty much the only thing that will help me get to sleep when I want to is a couple of Tylenol PMs.

Im dying.

Whe I travel to different time zones, I usedd to struggle a lot with jet lag. My doctor told me that I needed to reset my sleep schedule and told me to try taking mellatonin. It's non-prescription, for short term use only and and I will say that it works. The ones I use require me to put them under my tongue until they dissolve. I concur with the suggestions to reduce sugar and caffeine and the need to not eat at least two hours before bedtime.

Those of us who are older find it harder to get more continuous sleep. It's part of aging, but there are nights when I can get 8 hours and I'm grateful for that. Bottom line is to take care of yourself, because nobody esle will.

I know a way to fix that as I had a bad case of that when I had an 8am class. You need an alarm clock that works off battery power and is ***** loud, and multiple places to keep things locked up/delayed acquisition.

What I did was put an alarm clock in a locked filing cabinet next to my bed, but I put the key to the file cabinet in a locked car, but the keys to the car were left sitting on top of my ceiling fan, with the key to the filing cabinet stored in a huge cd binder, randomly placed. So every morning, I woke up, turned the fan off, went to get a stool or a chair to stand on and waited for the fan to spin down while listening to the radio at full volume, going out to my car and rifling through a cd carrying case for up to two minutes if I put the key in a good spot, then finally being able to open the file cabinet to shut the alarm off.

It didn't take me long to destroy that first file cabinet.

I have mild insomnia from time to time, but only when I have something on my mind or I am excited about something for the next day. But heres what works for me:

  • You may want to pick up some sort of workout activity during the day. Lifting weights followed by a shower usually gets me pretty sleepy. Or if lifting weights isn't your thing, jogging for a mile or two might get you tired.
  • Next, you may want to force-wake yourself up. By that, I mean get an alarm clock and set it to around 6AM. When it goes off, GET UP, no matter what. It takes some discipline, but if you are anything like me, your first reaction will be to hit the snooze or turn the alarm off all together and go back to sleep. But if you force yourself out of bed, you will slowly form a habit. By 10 or 11PM at night followed by your workout, you should be ready to fall out to sleep without any use of meds.
  • If none of that works, then you may need to change up your diet or consult a doctor/physician to see why you can't get any sleep.
