I'm a Maliek Collins fan and I'm guessing I'm also one of the few that even knew about him before the draft. That said, Collins has been uneven as most rookies are. I think he's best suited as a rotational player on obvious passing downs because he's not a 3-down player right now. His forte is exploiting a gap and penetrating; he can't hold the POA and gets moved with ease as he was at Nebraska.

A nice complimentary piece to add to the future of this defense.

I think he has very high upside as a 3 Tech and could be a Geno Atkins type player, but I agree with this assesmant. He really needs alot of work on his body to be a 3 down player. The plus side is the starts could accelerate his development. He is more exposed and everyone will have a better idea of where he needs to improve

Rankins has 1 sack and 8 tackles in 3 games.

Clark has no sacks and 10 tackles in 10 games (2 starts).

Nkemdiche has 1 tackle and 1 pass defensed in 3 games.

Butler has 1.5 sacks, 7 tackles and 1 pass defensed in 5 games.

Collins has 2 sacks and 11 tackles in 11 games (9 starts).

Just from those few, it's hard to tell. Collins has received more playing time possibly simply because he's needed more, and has more sacks and tackles that could be the result of that. Others seem to be slightly more productive in the playing time they've been given. The best of the first-round group right now looks to be Butler.

Actually, I also looked up A'Shawn Robinson (whom I liked in the first round) and he may be the winner of the group so far.

In 11 games (1 start), Robinson has 17 tackles, 2 sacks and 5 passes defensed.

Make @xwalker Great Again.

Question is what happens to T Crawford next year. Do we keep him at DE or have him compete with M. Collins at 3T?
It'll be interesting what happens to the DT rotation next year since Irving has played well with limited snaps and T. McClain has also played well also.

Eh, most people who pay attention to the draft (which, granted, isn't that many. much more on this board than in real life circles) knew about Collins. He wasn't really a under the radar type guy.

He was actually one of the higher rated DTs after his 2014 season, where he didn't 2 gap as much as they asked him to do in 2015. He isn't a natural 2 gapper, and a combination of Gregory + 3 tech more led to his much better stat line in 2014 than 2015.

DTs are so hard to judge unless they're a top 15ish pick or a guy like Logan who was just an animal. Collins is a natural 3 tech though, like most young lineman he needs to get stronger, faster, and better with his hands.

He has potential. I'd still take another 3tech in the first couple rounds if one falls though.

Edit: Forgot about Crawford at the 3.

He is a nice rotational player at the moment. His explosive 1st step alone gives you alot to work with. I will say by year 3 he is our full time starter at 3tech alongside David Irving at the 1tech
