Giants | Manning put up numbers in 2005; some still questioning the position
Mon, 3 Jul 2006 18:07:21 -0700

Rick Gosselin, of the Dallas Morning News, reports some people still think quarterback is a potential weak spot for the New York Giants, despite the presence of QB Eli Manning. Only three quarterbacks threw for more touchdowns (24) than Manning last season and only four threw for more yards (3,762). He took the Giants to an NFC East title in his first full season as a starter and has won 12 of his past 18 games. It appears Manning is judged by a higher standard since he is part of the Manning family of quarterbacks.

he slumped badly at the end of the season; he is not accurate; he likes to try and force passes and gets picked. Seems pretty obvious to me why some would question him.

Accuracy.

Game changing interceptions.

Single handedly losing entire games.

Manning is put down for many reasons. You can't just take two stats and say he's good. Bledsoe threw for the 2nd most yards in Cowboys's history. Is he the 2nd best Cowboys's QB? Well, hell no.

His first full season as a starter. Growing pains are a part of it, for any quarterback.

Couldn't agree more. I think the kid deserves a lot of credit. Not many could do what he did under the New York media microscope.

Nice analysis of Bledsoe...

It's about time you came over to the dark side burmashave. ;)

Manning sorta did a "Drew Bledsoe" imitation season-- I would expect him to be more like "Peyton Manning" this year.

Actually, he probably gets much more credit than he deserves. He's been fortunate enough to have a good team around him. The only difference between Manning and Joey Harrington in their first two years is the supporting cast. Stick Kyle Boller in that QB spot last year and they would have still made the playoffs.

Nah.

I think plenty of players could have put up big games against San Diego, St. Louis, Philly late, and New Orleans, and then been frighteningly mediocre the rest of the year. ;)

I figured one of the Bledsoe haters would try and compare them; the difference is, since the haters won't admit it, is that Bledsoe makes alot fewer mistakes, forces a lot fewer passes, and is more accurate.
Manning is both over rated and at the same time given a lot more credit then he deserves. Most of the giant wins were in spite of him, not because of him. While most othe Boys wins Bledsoe made plays when it counted. I do not see Manning ever getting more accurate, which hardly ever happens. He might get more mature and stop forcing passes (though it could be argued that Favre made a career of doing just that) but I do not ever see him getting more accurate. I beleive his carrer completion % at Mississippi was under 60%. VERY few quarterbacks that have that low a % incollege ever make it big in the pros. My cut off for a college QB to make it big in the pros is about 62%. You usually lose a few % going into the pros; 58% for pro QB is the absolute least that a good one can have.

You may be right.

But I would rather have Manning's potential at this point. In another year or so we're going to be looking for another starting QB-- and I don't relish the thought.

I don't expect too many people on this board to be singing the praises of the division rival's young quarterback, but the kid did have a pretty darn good season considering what little experience he's had in the league.

Kyle Boller couldn't hit an open receiver sitting down short in the middle of a soft zone. He was, by far, the weakest link on a team many considered to be championship worthy last season.

Let's not get too crazy here.

That's a valid point of course, but if I had the ability to choose a "young QB with potential," I wouldn't be looking his way.

Eli will always be trying to catch up to his brother. He will never put up the stats Peyton has; though he might match him in playoff chokes.

You are supposed to improve steadily- or at least improve. From the middle of last season Eli got worse. I say that is more telling.

Jack I think the "choke" thing is a pretty tough monniker to hang on someone. I would say the only season I felt Manning really came up small was last.

There is only one QB that is going to win it all any season-- and that being the case does it mean all the rest are "chokers?"

You have a point.

But I guess I would rather have a guy that gets to the playoffs and chokes rather than a guy that doesn't get to the playoffs period-- I guess that would make someone like that a "season-choker" aye? ;)

I would rather have a guy that doesn't choke it all, myself. Unfortunately that list is VERY short.
