Pro Football Talk reports the Seahawks have come to terms with franchised CB Marcus Trufant on a six-year contract worth $50.2 million.
The deal includes $20 million in guaranteed money, and will pay $28 million over the first three years and $34 million over the first four. It also includes a $3 million 2010 roster bonus that is guaranteed for skill and injury, which basically makes the first three years guaranteed. Trufant is just the second franchise player of the 2008 offseason to sign a long-term deal.

he's a :star: :star: :star: :star: cb in my opinion. i think he has more talent than any other cb in the league and if he got more picks he would be a 5 star cb. but i gotta say his few picks this year were at crucial times and/or huge plays. pick6 against the jets, woulda been a pick6 against buffalo but it was a crucial point in the game, and the 1 against the deadskins. i think he had 1 more but i can't remember it.

I can agree with the 4 star thing but only if there is one 5 star in the entire league.

If there is more than one 5 star Cornerback in your opinion than its almost impossible to leave Newman out.

Newman was 25 when we drafted him (graduated high school at age 20) so he doesn't have the NFL-mileage that other CBs his age have. Is 30 the absolute cutoff for good CBs in this league (when there are some, like Darrell Green, who were still very good up until their late 30s)?

Thanks, did that just happen?

I thought corners were an overrated position... Mike Holmgren and Andy Reid must head up poorly-run outfits that are constantly in the cellar.

I haven't seen that reported anywhere yet, though I haven't looked, but that is just yet another standard that can be expected when it's time to renew TNew.

And, yes, I do think TNew is far and away better than Trufant (Though I think Trufant is a darn fine CB) and I think more people would be on that bandwagon if TNew made more flashy plays.

The sad thing is, as good a year as he had, he had two other INT's, that he likely would have taken back for TDs, that he let slip away from him in the first Eagles game (Late in the game. If you recall after he just missed it the Eagles threw that late TD pass about 2 plays later. If he holds onto that one he's gone for sure), and in the second Giants game. He had one just get away from him. I think he'd have scored on this one too, but not as sold that he would have as I am on the one in the Eagles game.

Yes, a six-year, $50.2 million contract with $20 million guaranteed is considered a discount for Pro Bowl cornerbacks these days. Marcus Trufant and the Seahawks just agreed to that deal.

Cowboys fans should care, of course, because the time is coming for Terence Newman to cash in with one of these monster deals.

The only thing is with this contract, the state of Washington does have state income tax.

So it equals to about the same money Asante Samuel and Deangelo Hall got.

Trufant had a great 2007, but was awful in 2004 and bad in 2006. Trufant was so bad in 2004 that the Seahawks were considering getting rid of him after only his second season despite being drafted in the first round. They kept him around for 2005 because they pretty much had to and after switching to the RCB spot, he played better, but was more or less an average CB. Something clicked this year with Jim Mora, Jr. as his D-Coordinator and he played well. But mind you that over the year's Seattle has had a far better pass rush than Dallas has:

YEAR..............SEATTLE SACKS.............DALLAS SACKS

2003.................40..............................32

2004................36................................33

2005..................50..............................37

2006.................41..............................34

2007.................45..............................46

On average, Seattle has had 16% more sacks than Dallas has had since they both were drafted, although this is the first year that Dallas managed to get more sacks than the Seahawks (by 1 sack).

IMO, over the last two years only Champ Bailey and Nnamdi Asomugha have been better CB's than Newman and I'm hard pressed to find a better CB who has been in the game since 2003.

There are the parameters for TNew's new deal. Jerry needs to get it done before training camp.

exactly, i have an account name for that site but cant remember it. I was going to log in just to say to the guy who had a long post about newmans terrible tackling ability. Newman gets low and tackles, he doesnt run away. What do people expect out of a corner, the guy can tackle.

Yes, Newman got trucked once by DeAngelo Williams and Chris Cooley. Both of whom should probably truck a corner from time to time and do truck corners from time to time (Cooley only outweighs Newman by about 50 pounds). And the Cooley "truck" wasn't really a truck, more like Newman wussing out of it after he had hurt his back a few plays earlier.

Of course, he's living in Seattle rather than Oakland or Philly. So he's got that going for him too.

Yeah, that is exactly what i was thinking. When someone in that forum said that Newman was horrible in run support, I had to laugh. I always see him going in and making tackles on running backs. And yes, he is definitely one of the best tackling corners in the NFL. He isn't afraid to give someone or get hit.

Trufant agrees with Seahawks on long-term deal

Updated: March 26, 2008, 12:59 PM ETWith his wedding set for Saturday, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Marcus Trufant was ready to add to his long-term commitments.

It's All In The Timing

6347.jpg

Of the cornerbacks with the most interceptions in 2007, Marcus Trufant and Asante Samuel were able to capitalize with big contracts in the offseason. Bodden was traded to the Detroit Lions with a third-round draft pick for Shaun Rogers.

Trufant reached a six-year, $50.2 million deal with the Seahawks on Wednesday that includes $20 million in guarantees. In the first three years of the contract, he will make $28 million.

All along, Trufant wanted to stay in Seattle. He grew up in Tacoma, was drafted 11th overall in 2003 out of Washington State, and remains involved with the community.

The temporary roadblock was the franchise tag, which the Seahawks applied Feb. 20. Trufant's hope was to hit the free-agent market and give the Seahawks a chance to match. But the franchise tag gave the Seahawks all of the leverage in the negotiations.

The negotiations took a positive turn late last week when the Seahawks extended the contract of middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu. Four defensive players restructured their contracts in order to help fit the deal into the team's tight salary cap.

Trufant had told the Seahawks he would be willing to take a hometown discount on a long-term deal. The question was how much less he would be willing to take compared to deals done by Asante Samuel (who signed for six years, $57 million); Nate Clements (eight years, $80 million); and DeAngelo Hall (seven years, $70 million).

Now, he can go on his honeymoon knowing where he is going to play the next six years.

I'll take Newman because he's good and because he's a Cowboy.

But one thing is a fact, I think...Trufont plays the ball better than Newman...he seems to have better awareness and makes more big plays; however, guys who attack the ball and make plays often also give up more plays. I also like Trufont's age better.

I'd take Newman, but it's hard to fault someone who'd rather have Trufont for the playmaking and age.

I know one thing...I would never give Newman a 6 year deal unless it was pretty easy to eat the last couple of years if necessary.

You know...I always took exception with guys who said Deon wasn't a good tackler. I never saw Deon whiff, and I never saw him get faked out, and I certainly never saw anyone run away from him. The guy almost always made the tackles...but they were sissy tackles...he wasn't interested in hitting anyone or throwing his body anywhere but on the ground...still, the guy usually tripped em up or grabbed their jerseys and waited for help...seldom did he actually miss or let guys go.
