For a defensive-minded coach like Quinn, this is the scenario you wait for all season. One defensive coordinator I spoke to a few years back described it as hitting a baseball off a tee over and over. The opponent is down by multiple touchdowns in the second half, and you're free to pin the ears back on your best pass rushers and let them loose. More chaos. More turnovers. More mental errors from your clearly-rattled opponents. The Packers were leaning on keeper read options by Aaron Rodgers to gain any yards in the second half.

Quinn was sending blitzes from the secondary frequently. It was a lot like what we ended up doing in the second half against them. Thing is, Atlanta's coverage on the back end was much better.

Why not get a guy who can command double teams and hold the point of attack and free up Malik to do his thing?

I know some think Collins is a "solution", but I think his production was a little overstated. To me, he looks like a rotational player, not a cornerstone. At least in terms of what this defense expects from the 3-T role.

I am very ready for Marinelli to move along and perhaps we get a more aggressive defense that is capable of multiple looks.

Wilfork and Poe really play the 3-4. And both are incredible athletes at that size that can penetrate.

I don't think this aspect of the game has passed Marinelli bye. I think the game plays more to what Marinelli has always done. Teams run less these days so you need a pass rusher instead of a run clogger. WE just don't have that superior talent at either the 3-tech or the 1-tech. But the DE's don't beat their guys either, so it's easier to pinch the A-gap and stop the DT's on the pass rush.

Then maybe we should bring in a guy like Sheldon Richardson who can play 1 or the 3 Collins will get better he a rookie

No thanks on Richardson.

Great talent, horrendous attitude.

We pretty much need some competent DE's or an absolute stud at the 3-tech. Even if we were getting a 3-tech stud, it would be problematic for us unless we get some competent DE's. I like Lawrence, but he had injury issues in college and he wasn't effective this year as he had a back injury.

And even with that, we still need to get better at the MIKE and in the defensive backfield. In today's game, your first priority is to defend the short passes to give your pass rushers enough time to get to the QB. Then you try to get interior pressure because that's what ruins offenses these days and then you can look towards the pressure on the edge. Unless you have a Von Miller which changes the landscape of everything.

I wouldn't say that's why we lost. We pressured Rodgers plenty in the second half and came back in the game. Atlanta just took our second half gameplan. We lost because we had a terrible gameplan/preparation on defense.

Exactly. I mentioned right after the Giants game that NY barely blitzed Rogers and let him pick them apart. When they did blitz, Rogers was contained. I was hoping Garrett-top would not make the same mistake NY made. Of course what did they do most of the 1st & 2nd quarters? Rush 4 and let Rogers play backyard football on them.

I can imagine him in his politician voice (ok guys we're not gonna change what we do! We're gonna play cowboy football for 60 minutes and make them adjust to what we do).

Falcons didn't get to Rodgers with superior talent on the DL. They basically brought a 5th rusher via the blitz through much of the first half.
the falcons attacked rodgers. I still can't believe we went to prevent Defense and allowed rodgers to roll to the left have all day and complete a bomb down the field. We should have sent 5 and played 2 safeties back. Dumb defensive play call compounded by dumb defensive execution.

Marinelli, as a rule, doesn't believe in blitzing.

In many ways I think he harkens back to much to his Tampa Bay days where they had elite players like Sapp, Rice, and others.

The Cowboys really don't have anybody like that.

The DT is the most important defensive player on the team but Cowboys use them only as a run stopper. The Cowboys are sitting at home because they did not have a pass rush up the middle for Green Bay. The Falcons pressured Rogers and he was in trouble all game. Until the Cowboys go after DTs that collapse the pocket to give the QB no place to go and stop the run we will only be fodder for the Green Bay Packers and others in the playoffs.

Completely agree with you. Maranelli needs to give himself a nickname "the mule " guy is stubborn to a fault.

I don'r think MCollins is used ony as a run stopper he did get 5 plus sacks.
We could use more talent on the D/line. I assume thats on the way.
Marinelli's sysytem works fine. His done a tremendous coaching job with the players his handed.

Also, I think people are forgetting, Collins had the broken foot, missed OTA's, mini camp, TC, and didn't start until what, week 5 or 6, I can't remember.
give him a full off season of training now, and next year see how much he improves. Especially with better, or hopefully better talent around him.

Marinelli is a huge fan of quick twitch athletes even at the 1 tech. Has the game passed him by?

His 1 tech players aren't sack machines by any stretch of the imagination. Wouldn't it be better to have a pocket collapsing behemoth inside? Vince Wilfork, Poe and others come to mind.

Why not get a guy who can command double teams and hold the point of attack and free up Malik to do his thing?

Game passed him by.............great question. I don't necessarily think the game has passed him by as much as he's just a stubborn old man. He, like so many older folks, have a hard time adjusting to change. Personally, I like how many of these defenses (such as Seattle, Atlanta, and Jacksonville) run almost 3-4 defenses, but with 4-3 principles. Rod needs to understand that versatility is the key. It's what Belicheat has been doing for years - morphing between D's based on personal. Let's say Tak McKinley is there at 28, do they pick him and force him to play an undersized RDE or bulk him (ala Tank) and rob him of some of the quickness that makes him so effective. People may forget that Von Miller played his first 4 years as a SLB in a 4-3.

This guy has more lives than a cat, after the 0-16 debacle many thought he was done permanently in the NFL.

That's because they knew the numbers and what had been effective against Rodgers. Unfortunately, the Packers knew that's what they'd do and adjusted before the game.

How is it a prevent defense when we got 2 sacks in the 4th QTR on safety blitzes and outscored GB by 11 points in the quarter?

Why not Collins at 1-tech and Crawford at 3-tech? Collins is the biggest DT on the roster.

I'd actually like to see Crawford slim down and stay at LDE.

He's just not a super effective interior lineman and Collins cold end up being a stud at the 3T.

I think Collins at the 1T and Crawford at 3T wouldn't be an upgrade at all.

I think if we have the ability to upgrade Collins, then we should. Though personally, I'd like to see how he plays out at 3T.

I think his quickness translates well for the position and he could really blossom. But I want to see that with a guy that would be a handful next to him. Someone like Poe, maybe.
