You guys can bash Garrett all you want, but Marinelli and the special teams coach are the single biggest problems this team has now as constructed.

While we are at it, Richard is probably next in line for blame, but it’s hard to tell for sure with the crazy organization structure.

Garrett is actually going to get scapegoated here this year because of his assistants. Like Alannis Morissette once said, “It’s a little bit ironic”....

If KRichard doesn't leave, he's the next DC

KMoore stays as OC. He's earned it.

Marinelli will be retired.

KQuinn will be fired.

JasonG will be retired. His contract is expired.

Seriously? The marinelli approach of "get up the field" leaves massive running lanes and wide gaps for mobile QB's to step up in the pocket. We have zero to none disguised blitzes, mostly ramming Jaylon into the guard when we do. This defensive scheme couldnt be any worse or they vastly missed on the players to play the scheme.

Agree.

The defense is busted.

But have hope.

The Legion of Boom coach is already on our team.

I believe Marinelli turned over the play calling to Richard last year. Either way, they can both go. Along with Garrett and everyone else. The new HC should select his own staff. If not, it's just more of the same from the front office.

You are wrong.

Marinelli is the DC.

Because he is not the DC.

He's the secondary coach.

There are 7 defensive coaches.
And which coordinator is calling the defensive plays? Looks like Richard to me. Imho, Richard is stubborn and resistant to making adjustments despite poor results.

Relaying the D formation to the radio in JSmiths helmet.

Marinelli is the DC.

He approves everything on the defense.

KR is the secondary/passing game coordinator.

He talks to the defense too.

Just like the 5 other D coaches.

Is it Marinelli or Richard? I haven;t seen the improvement in the secondary and honestly, Richard's defensive play calling has hurt them at times. This is the problem with having two guys in charge. No one is accountable. But at the end of the day, Garrett is the head coach and if the defense is not playing up to standards then its Garrett's job to get in the faces of the defensive coaches and make them fix it. The same is true with special teams. Tolerating mediocrity is the same as creating mediocrity.
Excellent post, exactly how I feel too.

Huh? There's a ton of articles dating back to last year about this. So Marinelli is lying and you know the truth?

Maybe you should follow the team a little closer or at the very least do a little research before you tell someone else that they are wrong.

Many who have been following the Cowboys have had their suspicions new defensive backs coach/passing game coordinator Kris Richard is responsible for the defense now. Defensive Coordinator Rod Marinelli has traditionally used blitzes sparingly, but the noticeable uptick in the usage of those packages for the Cowboys over the first two games has been a sign Richard may be responsible for these changes.

Marinelli confirmed suspicions Thursday when he revealed Richard is indeed behind the play calling.

“KRichard talks to players...he must be the DC in camo....

KR relays formations to the D cap...he’s the DC now.”

except he’s not the DC.

Marinelli is listed as the DC on the team website.

it’s Marinelli defense.

It’s the same busted scheme from 2013.

I thought the secondary was better last year
The tone set by HC is huge and we don’t hold guts accountable and that’s a big part of leading the league in missed tackles
I blame garret, the whole defensive staff and special teams coach

Agreed,,, it's really an untenable position to be named head coach and then have the Jones' pick your coordinators and players for you. If you're going to be fired because of THEIR performance then you should have more control over who gets hired to fill those positions.

You seriously think that's how things happened?

So before Richard calls all the plays he runs them by Rod first?

Can you tell me where you got this information?

It must be really hard for you to admit when you're wrong, you just keep typing the same thing over and over.

Rod is the DC, but during the games Richard calls the defensive plays. Fact.

Richard calling the plays and showing why the Seahawks gave up on him as defense coordinator. Don't understand the hype of this same look defense....

Cowboys web site.

Marinelli is listed as the DC.

KR is the secondary coach/passing game coord.

KR relays the formation into the radio of the def cap.

Talking does not equal being in charge.

Marinelli is in charge of the defense.

has been since 2014.

There's evidently enough blame to go around with the entire Cowboys' organization to point fingers in a variety of directions. The team pretty much reflects organizational and coaching inadequacies to state with conviction that much of the fault lies in the overall setup as a whole. Disarray is running rampant throughout. The team and their inadequate performances are a clear reminder of that fact. It's a struggle for me to picture them winning another game.

The defensive coaching staff needs to be completely gutted. I know the blame falls to Garrett for a lot of stuff, but the defensive philosophy with this group of talent on defense is not sustainable. Average to below average QB's are having their best game of the season against this defense. Ball control drives right down the field. The only coach I would keep is Moore and Kitna and maybe a couple offensive assistants because Moore has shown promise and he's just starting. I would definitely go looking for a new Oline coach. The Oline, for as much as they are being paid, is just average.

The defensive problems bring up a bigger issue: what value does Garrett bring to the defensive side of the ball? He was an offensive specialist until he struggled to the point he was forced to give that up. How does he help the defense other than iterate that he prefers a plain vanilla defense so as to not confuse our guys which in turn makes us more vulnerable to opposing QBs. His overall coaching preference for scheme simplicity is clearly hurting us on both sides of the ball.

No.

Rod is the DC.

Blame Rod for the mess.

He's been able to survive this long blaming other people for his busted scheme.

Notice all the good coaches that have ran under him? Callahan, Eberflus, Bissachia, etc. I find it funny.

He also has an almost non existent coaching tree.

How many coaches under him have gone on to become head coaches? How many have gone on to promotions?

it’s very few. Usually head coaches around as long as Garrett, have fairly extensive coaching trees after 10 years of head coaching.
