I thought about that, but I looked at his entire career.... It wasn't impressive. Almost every great player that ever played for him was a free agent signing or was already on the team when he got there...
Blasphemous post, but entirely accurate. The Bears D, for example, needed Peppers to break through.
To get a good read on what a true "Marinelli guy" is, look at what he has been associated with when he was the DC, then head coach in Detroit then later Chicago.
Some real awful players. You can blame Matt Millen, poor scouts in Chicago or whatever, but the defenders which I am sure he signed off on were not good.
Good luck if you can find a lot of good in these players, all picked in premium rounds where Marinelli has been over the past decade:
Ikaika Alama-Francis
Jordan Dizon
Gerald Alexander
Ernie Sims
Daniel Bullocks
Andre Fluellen
Jarron Gilbert
Corey Wootton
Chris Conte
About the only player that was somewhat successful for more than a season was Cliff Avril.
Where is his proven track record for "rushmen" and the like? He might have had a Melton go one good year or Paea but he is not some rainmaker with pass rushers. I don't understand how he got that reputation.
He needs to have free agent talent and high draft choices to eliminate the chance of error.
His best skill is coaching what he has, teaching, inspiring and motivating. I doubt he really can look at a player like a true evaluator. Otherwise, he would not have a track record like he has.
