Marinelli as a talent evaluator

Exactly, examine our latest draft picks after round 4.

Basically all 4 are developmental players. None of them are even meant to provide direct depth this year. Rounds 1-4 though, will probably all get significant playing time, hopefully Green does not.

Green was a need that you hope to not use. But with Free's history you did need to invest in a swing tackle.

Polarizing prospect. I've seen him with a 4th round projection and I've seen him with an UDFA projection.

The big thing about this player is he reminds me of Jabaal Sheard. A defensive end playing out of position is really going to hinder their production. Huge difference between a defensive end in a 3-4 and a 4-3. First the opportunity to pass rush is generally diminished, and second you're generally going to be completely undersized. Russell is pretty athletic, but he was being wasted at 3-4 end and yet he is obviously too large to play outside linebacker.

Definitely someone who could develop into a proper rushman on the left end.

If Marinelli can draw something out of him, he will be a player. My guess is we won't have very long before we find out, he either will get cut pretty quickly, or he'll make the team and we'll see what he can do.

I'm not trying to, but you always get a couple trolls that try to derail topics that need to be put in their place.

If you ever think you'll put me "in my place," call the Smithsonian because they'll need to see this new species of pigs with wings.

I thought about that, but I looked at his entire career.... It wasn't impressive. Almost every great player that ever played for him was a free agent signing or was already on the team when he got there...

So you are assuming he has no input on FA signings?

If our war room is run properly, Rod Marinelli.....~moment of silence~.....has a very small voice in the room.

But I was thinking this very same thing on day 3 of this draft. Damien Wilson. That's a Marinelli LB. Ryan Russell. Career underachiever scouts would frown on but an assistant coach might feel he's the guy who can get the most out of his measurables. Mark Nzeocha. Another raw athlete a coach can mold. I'm not claiming these are Marinelli driven draft choices, I don't know what goes on in that room, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were.

So when you're watching Darren McFadden starting this season you may have R(G)od to thank for it.

If you recall, when Campo was canned and Big Bill brought in there was a shift toward the scouting department and away from the assistant coaches in terms of talent evaluation, stacking our board and making draft day decisions. This was a good change. Those coaches don't know the players like the scouts do. There needs to be an open communication between the two with the coaches letting the scouts know what types of players they need, but it should always be the scouting department identifying who those players are.

This...hence why I continue to be frustrated with the team's position on the 1tech. Quality always outweighs quantity. But it seems Rod's voice carries so much weight in the war room

This thread is pure speculation and completely pointless. To rate a defensive coordinator as an evaluator of talent is just plain silly. First off, who even knows how much, if any say Marinelli has ever had in player evaluation at any of his coaching jobs. Second, talent evaluation is primarily done by the scouting department. It's no coincidence that the Cowboys have had recent draft success since Mr. McClay has been in the picture.

I'm sure Marinelli has opinions on certain players, but to give him credit or blame for players chosen in the draft is foolish.

Blasphemous post, but entirely accurate. The Bears D, for example, needed Peppers to break through.

To get a good read on what a true "Marinelli guy" is, look at what he has been associated with when he was the DC, then head coach in Detroit then later Chicago.

Some real awful players. You can blame Matt Millen, poor scouts in Chicago or whatever, but the defenders which I am sure he signed off on were not good.

Good luck if you can find a lot of good in these players, all picked in premium rounds where Marinelli has been over the past decade:

Ikaika Alama-Francis
Jordan Dizon
Gerald Alexander
Ernie Sims
Daniel Bullocks
Andre Fluellen
Jarron Gilbert
Corey Wootton
Chris Conte

About the only player that was somewhat successful for more than a season was Cliff Avril.

Where is his proven track record for "rushmen" and the like? He might have had a Melton go one good year or Paea but he is not some rainmaker with pass rushers. I don't understand how he got that reputation.

He needs to have free agent talent and high draft choices to eliminate the chance of error.

His best skill is coaching what he has, teaching, inspiring and motivating. I doubt he really can look at a player like a true evaluator. Otherwise, he would not have a track record like he has.
