Marinelli to take over as DC

Unless we add some talent to the front seven and maybe one good safety, marinelli won't be able to turn this defense around. We need to hit on 3 new starters on defense this offseason.

That is far too much to try to fix in one draft and limited resources in free agency. The way we look at drafts, we are happy if we get one starter out of it.

Was Marinelli a true DC calling the defenses or was he the defensive equivalent of the offensive coordinators we see in places like New Orleans and Green Bay where the HC calls all the offensive plays?

I wonder how heavily involved Lovie Smith was.

Not sure tbh...knew he was D coordinator in CHI but looked up the rankings right before posting. I'm sure Lovie was heavily involved but don't recall him hugging that headset when the D was on the field like he would if was physically calling the plays in.

Supposedly Marinelli was calling the defensive plays in Chicago his last two years from what I can see.

I am not too worried about him or the defensive coaching. I am worried about them recognizing the fact they need talent on that side of the football and getting it.

What has JG done to make you believe he is a good coach?

You know, this is an honest question, so I'll answer it, but let me throw out the caveat that I'm pretty lonely as a JG supporter willing to post right now, so I get a bit of the one-legged-guy-at-a-butt-kicking-contest treatment when I post it, and that gets tedious, so understand if I don't engage actively if the replies start coming fast and furious.

I think he's a great communicator. I think he inspires support from his players--more than most coaches. I think he's assembled a decent staff, and that includes past hires and even Rob Ryan who I didn't like but who I think was a pretty good coach. I think he tolerates Jerry well and handles his...eccentricities. I think he's really, really good with handling press and PR. I think he runs an organized off season and camp. I think he's got a plan for the team long-term and he sticks to that plan. I think the changes he's made to the scouting department are good. I think our proscouting has improved significantly under him. I think our college scouting--especially the CFA signings--have improved under him. Even players we don't actually draft but had a lot of reported interest in have turned out to be pretty good players. He handles challenges (on gamedays, the red flags) well. I love how he'll rotate through options quickly and churn the roster aggressively when he's looking to fill positions. I like that he's been willing to cut underperforming vets and roll the dice on young players. I think he's done an ok job getting to 500 with the roster and injuries he's had-especially the last two years.

On the flip side, I don't thing he's strong on game days. I don't think he's a particularly gifted signal caller. I don't particularly like his offensive system and I think it's outdated and not all that fun to watch. He doesn't handle time management well. We don't run enough play action. He doesn't take enough down-distance risks for my liking. He's a ginger and probably does not have a soul as a result. He claps too much. That's about it on the negatives, but, by and large, when you compare them to the challenges of building a roster and bringing consistency to Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

You just described a great GM...admire your (balls)perseverance and descriptive (understandable even if don't agree) explanation for your support towards JG. Kudos

I think that is a good analysis of head coach Jason Garrett .... I agree with most of what you said but we have to get him some hair color for men and see of we can't rescue his soul.

He's a very smart guy and I'm sure he knows how to run a good camp.

He looks lost on the sidelines during games. He's good at handling the PR side, I'll give him that. But the most important part, his scheme isn't very good. If you watch the packers or saints offense, you can tell its organized and has rhythm to it. A good scheme helps receivers get open and make plays once they get the ball. Our offense is chaotic and unorganized. Our receivers struggle to get open.

Yeah, let's emulate the the Cardinals. Brilliant!

All in all, having Kiffin in the same role as Moore is not a big deal in terms of winning or losing games.

Ultimately it will come down to the same things from Garrett that have been issues since he arrived in Dallas. Clock management and offensive balance.

Of course the biggest issue is Jerry's mismanagement and Garrett's inferior coaching. Just humorous we can't cut our losses with guys like Kiffin. Instead of getting rid of him we just shuffle around his title. But hey, the Cards won 5 more games with Moore so somehow that must be relevant to us. :lol

Didn't the Mavs win a championship with an inordinately large coaching staff? Higher coach-to-player ratio = players and units can receive more individual one-on-one time with the coaches, plus the coaches have a narrower range of responsibilities so they can devote more attention to them individually. I dunno.
