It's not a zone defense. As Alexander correctly pointed out, it's much more man. I couldn't tell if they were using Cover 3 with man concepts, but now I fully believe it has been mostly Cover 1 with man on the corners, some LB and SS zone thrown into the mix.
I don't think anybody would ever say that man coverage is a 'bend but don't break.' They don't blitz a lot, but the pass rushers are going right up the field. Zimmer was far more conservative than what we have seen this season as he was a Cover 2 coach that wanted to guard against the run.
As Sturm pointed out, the team went to much more zone against the Bucs. And they got 2 interceptions (should have had 3 if Patmon makes that easy catch).
After watching the All-22 film of the TB game I think a big issue we have is that our corners (especially Carr and Claiborne) are better suited for man in the sense that is the style they play best in terms of coverage and their weak tackling. They would probably give up more yardage in zone, but the defense would at least get interceptions in zone coverage. I don't think they like Wilcox as a deep safety (it may be more of a tackling issue instead of a coverage issue), but they are in love with Church who can only play shot and intermediate zone coverage.
I would have to think they will try zone coverage again, although they may have tried zone simply because they were playing against a rookie QB in Winston.
Supposedly, Jones will take over for Claiborne. So, it will be interesting to see because we'll get a good look at Jones in zone or man coverage. Personally, I think our pass defense isn't going to be that great regardless and I would rather get interceptions to offset the yards given up. But, we'll need the pass rush to step up if we're in zone.
